haircut - what do you do with a baby if you want a haircut?

I don't get my hair cut often so it's enough of a trauma without throwing a baby into the mix. I need to get it cut before I go down to statutory Mat pay so... Do I call and ask if it's ok to bring the baby, do I just turn up?

The baby is EBF and last time I left him with DH for half an hour they both went into meltdown.

Don't you have a mate who's a hairdresser?

She can come and do it and you can carry on feeding while she snips.

NonnoMum · 16/03/2011 20:48

I wouldn't take a baby, but then I did once take one of mine to the dentist. But then I spend hours at the hairdressers...
Speak to the salon. Or get a mobile hairdresser to come to you?

tigana · 16/03/2011 20:48

how long does it take to get your gair cut? Is it a high maintenence job?

or..tell dh to man up. Grin

Trousers · 16/03/2011 20:49

Does the baby sleep ok when being pushed around in the pram by someone else? That's the method I just used and managed to get highlights done too!

CeliaFate · 16/03/2011 20:53

Can't dh go with you and the baby so he can cuddle bubs, but can hand him over to you if he's hungry?

planestrainsautomobiles · 16/03/2011 20:54

I'd take the baby with me if it was for a haircut and blowdry. If I need highlights / colour I've done it when my MIL can help out during the day or a late night appointment. With DS1 he never took a bottle so was always a bit more tricky and I had to tie it in with his nap times, etc.

You don't need to phone up first to check, I've seen lots of babies / toddlers in hairdressers in buggies or on mummy's lap.

The last time I went one of the other hairdressers played with DS2 (nearly 1) for the whole appointment. She didn't have any clients that morning.

it's just a bog standard bob, tidying up the mess toni and guy made in November. It's a hairdresser who has cut my hair before, when I was pregnant, and is never really busy but perhaps I can get DH to come.

mobile hairdresser. She does the dds too while she is at it. dd2 was quite "clingy" so she just stayed on my lap and we brushed the hair off her at the end, and put a towel over her head when the spray went on me!

loobylu3 · 16/03/2011 23:11

I have often taken the babies (well v active 2 year old now) through necessity. It is easier when they are small generally as they stay still and might even go to sleep if you are lucky!
Are you going to a hairdresser that you have used before? If it is someone new, perhaps mention it when you book the appointment.

chocolateteabag · 17/03/2011 09:25

I have taken my DS both times so far. At 6 weeks he slept in pram and I bf-d while highlights were taking (or whatever they do for the 30 mins you sit there for)
At 15 weeks he was much more alert and looked about, sat on my lap when I had my hair washed etc.

There is so much to look at that it keeps him amused - just need to try to time bfing around the cut or while coluor is taking ( don't try while hair dryer is on as mine found this far too interesting and kept flashing my boob at the poor trainee)

bronze · 17/03/2011 09:27

Last time I went I sling carried ds and had to feed him while I waited. By then he was asleep so I had my hair cut with him on my lap with the gown over us both

ElsieR · 17/03/2011 09:58

Take baby with you and go at a time when it's not too busy. Think about how great you'll feel afterwards!

bigkidsmademe · 17/03/2011 10:04

I had a massage and pedicure last week which took 2 hours. I fed DS (9 weeks) in a cafe next to the salon then left him to go for a walk in the pram with DH, met up with them 2 hours later for another feed before we all went home together. Is that not possible, could you go when your DH has a day off or at the weekend?

If not, I'd do mobile hairdresser or let them know in advance, early morning slot might be best as there would probably be spare hairdressers to play with him!

CultureMix · 17/03/2011 20:18

While they're still not crawling, taking them to hairdressers shouldn't be a problem. Obviously you need to time it right (naptime is good but DON'T count on a crabby baby falling asleep just cause it's time for your appt - instead if baby sleeps for 2 hours aim for the second hour). Hairdressers are very interesting places for babies, lots to watch and the white noise from hairdriers is good too.

Once they're 9 months+ it's trickier, don't count anything over an hour. Bring distractions and toys and crackers and warn your hairdresser first. Of course once it's started you're committed as you can't really leave midway through.

I tried highlights for the first time when DS2 was 6mo, went fine, by the time I went back for a touch up 3 months later it was an ordeal. As the boys are older now I book my hairdresser on Saturday around 1pm, leave them after lunch with my DH, and have a couple of interrupted hours for me with a cup of coffee and magazines. Bliss! Grin Look forward to it weeks in advance.

maxpower · 17/03/2011 20:23

Hi DF - when did you last leave DS with your DH? Can you give them another trial run together to see if you can get half an hour alone to get your hair cut- the break'd do you good anyway.

CointreauVersial · 17/03/2011 22:01

Take 'em with you! DS1 sat on my knee throughout many a haircut, from 6 weeks onwards, didn't mind getting showered in hair occasionally if it meant he got a bit of the action and could stare at the cute baby in the mirror. Often he disappeared underneath my clothing for a quick snack.

Once he was mobile he availed himself of the resident box of toys/books or chatted to the fish in the aquarium.

It helped that it was a friendly salon, and I went during the weekdays, when it was quiet. I took all the dcs there with me; still do (all they want now is a free biscuit and somewhere to sit while playing DS).

I dont know from experience yet but I look after by bessie mates baby while shes there as doesnt take long and she settles him down before she goes so very quiet and regularly doesnt even wake up so I am hoping her will do the same.

Get DH invloved as I am sure practice makes perfect x

CountBapula · 18/03/2011 02:02

When I just had a cut and DS was four months, I got DH to take him for a walk in the sling. For highlights a month later, he did the same then brought him in to me for a feed (our hairdresser is very local) but DS didn't seem bothered about feeding and seemed happy to sit and watch what was going on/play on DH's lap. He is fascinated by me blow-drying my hair at home anyway, so there was plenty to see!

Trixxie89 · 18/03/2011 02:20

I'm fortunate enough to have a friend who is a hairdresser so she came over when DS was just a few weeks old to cut my hair,I didn't have the confidence to leave home with him because of breast feeding. I definitely think it's worth looking at a mobile hairdresser if you can, that way you have all the toys and tricks around if you need to distract your baby. It's wonderful being pampered and going to the salon is part of the experience enjoy it where ever happens.

:)

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 18/03/2011 02:40

I'd try again with leaving the baby with his Dad. They've got to learn to be together, I'm sure a grown man can cope with his own baby for the half an hour or so that you're talking about.

DuelingFanjo · 18/03/2011 11:32

thank you. I will probably have the haircut on a week day and DH will be in work (I want it cut this week really) so will ring and ask, maybe book it for 11ish when DS usually naps.

I guess I am beib a wuss because I don't like the idea of pfb DS being in a state if the haircut takes longer and DH gets in a tiz.
