I haven't coloured my hair for ages and I an noticing more and more grey peeping through. I'm not ready to let it go yet so what are your recommnedations for the best home hair colours to cover grey hairs?

belle colour, and i have tried loads!

Havingkittens · 16/03/2011 14:27

I use Castings. It's a semi permanent so not quite as harsh as a permanent but I do find it covers the grey pretty well (and I have a fair amount!). I did try Nice 'n' Easy but it made my hair really dry and the colour was nowhere near as nice.

I've got tonnes of grey - I'm only 33! I use Feria (permanent). I used to use L'Oreal Excellence but found it faded too quickly.

Themumsnot · 16/03/2011 17:04

I use Nice n Easy as it gives really good coverage but then I am completely grey (I think) so Castings is no good for me. HK is right though, it makes your hair really dry. Interested to hear what others recommend.

I've been grey for years. Keep going back to nice n easy, although colours have def changed recently. It only lasts about 2wks max on me.Watching this link for an alternative to try.

i have used the casting the bog standard one and it was good, but i have way too much grey now.

i tried the nice and easy recently and it burnt my scalp, it was awful!!

I think I used L'Oreal Excellence cream last time, I didn't bother with the squirter though but painted it on with a brush in sections like they do at the hairdressers. It has lasted as well as a salon colour, I was very chuffed! You can get the brushes in places like Wilko for a couple of quid. I can only speak for "Golden Brown" though.

Boots own brand semi permanent is great!

I use Nice n easy and it works on mine. I have lots of greys coming through in my roots at the moment, and I'm only 30

Thank you ladies. This has given me some ideas.

Greenlotus I read an article recently (forget where) and the colouring expert said that L'Oreal Excellence was the best for covering hair that had a lot of grey or faded quickly with other dyes. I wrote in down as once my salon colour fades this time - I am going back to doing it at home as it has become so expensive at the salon. I used to do my own using the brush and a bowl to mix up and paint on the colour - it was good but I found nice and easy and the 10 minute ones always faded quite quickly on my hair to a ginger sort of colour I disliked (used pale browns or darkest blonde to get a brown result).
In some ways wish I could leave it grey - i started to let it grow out in the summer - but in my holiday snaps I look like a very old lady - so until it goes a gorgeous bright white grey (if ever) looks like I'll have to keep dyeing my horrid salt and pepper and faded formerly very dark hair.

To my mind it has to be NIce n Easy. I have been colouring my hair for two decades now and think I have tried every brand going. Nice n easy medium cool brown covers grey well and doesn't do that awful thing of turning your hair jet black. I leave it on for the max time possible. I have cool pale Irish colouring (dark hair, pink toned skin and grey blue eyes) and anything red based looks dreadful. Has anyone else noticed how many red toned colours there are available as opposed to cool?

mulberryless · 17/03/2011 15:46

know what you mean Lipstickgal, I'm mid blonde. I either go orange with the red hues or bit washed out with the cool tones. The ash blonde range has gone really awful. I can't use them anymore as very odd colour. I'm mixing 2 other colours together. Oh to have my natural hair colour again!!!!!
