Have horrible, thick, coarse hair in unflattering asymmetric bob. Need new look, am thinking should save up and go for really good, expensive restyle with a master. Don't know who, though! Any ideas?

Anyone? Was wondering about james brown but a bit intimidated by the idea...

I am thinking of this too and my friend said Daniel Hersheson which has the advantage of being in Harvey Nicks Smile

stillfrazzled · 16/03/2011 09:13

OK, so we've got one name.

Any other hot tips out there? Smile

I always liked Heidi at Charles Worthington, Tottenham Court Road. James Brown is overrated. I wasnt impressed.

polyhymnia · 16/03/2011 10:02

kittta, I've been to Charles Worthington in the past and think they're generally good salons. Have a pleasant atmosphere - pampering (free drinks, etc) without being too poncy, as some West End salons certainly are.

Carolyn there does really good colour. I haven't found a particular cutter there, as always used to go to Aveda until recently when my stylist left. But I have a friend who goes there - the Covent Garden branch, where she has Joelle - and her hair looks good.

At present, about to try another London salon kindly suggested my a MNer, but am waiting to report back on that till after next week, when I'm having cut and colour done there. Expecting good things, though.

stillfrazzled · 16/03/2011 12:11

A good cutter is what I'm looking for - someone who can suggest the right cut that works with my incompetence, hair type and need to wear glasses!

Joelle at Aveda sounds interesting, is heidi at CW a good cutter?

And yes, def report back!

I would go for an salon that has a big oriental clientele.
I know someone who swears by a girl in Hob Camden.

polyhymnia · 16/03/2011 15:46

stillfrazzled - sorry my post was misleading. When I mentioned a Covent Garden branch I meant the one belonging to Charles Worthington in Gt Queen St, not the Aveda salon there.

Joelle works at the Covent Gdn Charles Worthington. I used to go the Aveda near there but, alas, my stylist left and, though I do like the qute trendy salon, I can't recommend a stylist there as terrific as she was.

Not sure whether you're looking for somewhere 'funky' - which I'd say Aveda and Trevor Sorbie are examples of - or somewhere a bit more 'mainstream' (though not frumpy), like John Frieda, Daniel Hersheson, or Daniel Galvin. Have been to all of these in my time but, as you say, the secret is to find not just a salon you like but the right cutter (and, if appropriate, colourist). The only person I can recommend by name now at the salons just mentioned is Lino at Galvin - he's good. You can see his details on their website.

kittya · 16/03/2011 18:10

Heidi is fab. You might want to check she is still there as I go to HOB now because it is nearer to me. Also Jon at Charles Worthington is meant to be fantastic, he does loads of fashion.

polyhymnia · 16/03/2011 19:34

I did once have a cut with Andrew John at Worthington, who apparently does lots of work with celebs, etc and it was a really bad cut - one of the few I've had in that level salon. Perhaps it was just a bad day, but wouldn't recommend him if he's still there.

stillfrazzled · 16/03/2011 19:37

Thanks for the tips. What sort of price range are we talking about, btw? The website appears to be down.

I used to go to Martin in Toni and Guy Wardour Street - I know some don't like T &G but found him v good.

However now in more straitened circumstances I go to Chaz in Peckham - a tenner for a dry/wet cut - he's really good I kid you not.

You have to sit and wait but best to go in the week.

Not really directed at the OP but wanted to give him a mention.

sincitylover · 16/03/2011 19:44

PS Martin gets seconded out sometimes to do London Fashion week.

manyskillz · 16/03/2011 19:56

I'm with all the Charles Worthington fans. This chap has cut my hair for the last 3 or so years (since he was pretty junior), and he's always been brilliant. I have massive PITA hair, incredibly thick and frizzy... the kind that has caused me to weep following disastrous haircuts at Toni & Guy and Marc has always had good ideas, without ever being pushy. I love him so much that even though I've moved a looooong way from London (3-4 hours on the train) I won't have anyone else cut my hair! Its about 70 or 75 quid for a cut and blow dry with him, but worth every penny.

otchayaniye · 16/03/2011 20:34

Was recommended to on here - Fernando at Glass Salon in Clerkenwell. Bout 60 quid, no nonsense and great curly hair cutter. Has revolutionised my hair and I go only to him.

Rollergirl1 · 16/03/2011 22:06

I've been going to Tommy Guns in Beak St for 11 years.

All the salons are very "shoreditch dickhead too cool for school" and I can imagine could be a bit intimidating if you've never been befor but I have never had a bad cut or colour there in all that time. Pretty reasonable price too at £50 for cut and blow-dry.

kittya · 17/03/2011 18:20

I imaigine you will be looking at about £49 for Charles worthington its worth it, especially if you have three glasses of wine. The customer care is fantastic. Wine

Rollergirl - I've also been going to Tommy Guns for the past 10 years! First in their Beak Street branch, but now to their Brewer Street branch round the corner, as it is a much bigger, brighter space with no downstairs.
