Crocs - comfortable and practical or footwear of satan?

Bit of a boring afternoon - so thought I would seek opinion. Personally, I hate them. Ok, there may be appropriate places where plastic, moulded, sterilisable footwear is essential. An operating theatre perhaps. But on the street. I. Think. Not.

I could go on, and no doubt I will be set to rights about being rot proof and good for people in and out of the water etc. But no, my head shall not be turned. Grin

Heinous. Don't care how comfy they are. Ok for kiddies on the beach.....that's it.

rookiemater · 11/03/2011 12:54

They can be worn camping and in the water, thats it.

rookiemater · 11/03/2011 12:54

Oh and gardening I suppose provided none of your neighbours are stylish or attractive.

Carrotsandcelery · 11/03/2011 12:56

We were advised, in a shoe shop selling Crocs, that they are actually very bad for most children's feet. They are a very wide fit and even on my children, who have very wide fitting feet, they are too wide to be considered a good fit.
The shoe fitter warned me that they are not supportive enough for growing children's feet.
I have heard the same from a podiatrist.
I suspect they are fine for paddling in the river but not for daily wear.

walesblackbird · 11/03/2011 12:57

My kids love theirs and I like the flip flops for the beach and summer holidays.

Prefer my fit-flops though

pallymama · 11/03/2011 13:03

Carrotsandcelery - that will explain why they still fit when my feet ballooned! :)

MickyLee · 11/03/2011 13:04

One heavy pregnant hot summer, my flipflops were killing my elephant feet. I spotted some crocs for sale outside a shop and yes I bought them Grin

Make great slippers now though (although wouldn't dare step out in them again)

Carrotsandcelery · 11/03/2011 13:21

I can imagine they are the perfect fit for pregnant feet Grin

basana · 11/03/2011 14:26

Kids - good pool/beach shoe. Agree I wouldn't use them regularly as too loose to be good for kids' feet (surely anything off the peg is going to be inferior to a properly fitted shoe?)
Adults - never never, unless you are a dental hygienist perhaps?

They look awful.
We all wear ours as garden shoes.

As for being bad for childrens feet, its terrible mine live in wellies and crocs, bare feet inside and clarkes on rare occassions. Not so worried about dd in no time she will be wering 5" heels!

carols9995 · 03/04/2012 22:03

I love them and have lots. I've never worn anything so comfortable. They are cheap. I wear them everywhere.

eggtimer · 03/04/2012 22:09

Carrotts, the 'supportive shoe' thing is bobbins. A ruse to sell more shoes. Like Clarks, who seem to fit shoes so small that even they recommend having them re-checked every 6 weeks. Complete bobbins.

Healthiest thing for kids feet is barefoot (when it is safe).

PippiL · 03/04/2012 22:16

I personally wouldn't wear them...

...but I also wouldn't judge someone for wearing them, just as I would hope people don't judge me for my own style disasters.

When you have health problems like a bad back or in my case, knackered knees, you will wear anything that is comfy and doesn't cause further pain.

I would rather see a comfortable woman than one crippling herself in silly heels.

Minstrelsaremarvellous · 03/04/2012 22:16

I confess to having a pair as slippers … easy to do recycling bin run and to de-poo the lawn. I deliberately bought a fugly brown colour so I'd never be tempted to wear them anywhere but at home Blush. But they are ugleeeee as sin, but sooooo comfortable. I hate myself for it.

Hopefullyrecovering · 03/04/2012 22:18

If people want to go around wearing what looks like a block of cheese on their feet, it's entirely up to them.

In fact, why stop at blocks of cheese on the feet? Why not wear a Croc Onesie? Dress like cheese ...

Sparklingbrook · 03/04/2012 22:26

I haven't seen a pair of Crocs look good on anyone TBH. They don't exactly enhance an outfit do they?

Gardening, walking in rivers/on the beach, that's what they are for. Wink

HandMadeTail · 03/04/2012 22:32

I've always hated them, but last summer, I came to see them as summer wellies. Not for me, though, or my DDs, just for DH and DS. The males in my family have no taste when it comes to footwear.

Rustygussets · 03/04/2012 22:39

I have Crocs and like them a lot. The Alice and Olivia style. They aren't clumpy cheese ones.

Most comfortable shoes ever. I will not wear heels mind as they look ugly to me. Feel nasty too.

Nope -freedom for me!

You have to be quite cool to carry off the original ones with panache- but it can be done and I admire those who can.

SodoffBaldrick · 04/04/2012 02:43

Great for kids and I have actually seen some adults carry them off. I can't, sadly.

Where I live (not the UK) we're surrounded by beaches, it is very outdoorsy, sailing is huge, very, very middle class, full of healthy, exercise-fanatic types and I have definitely seen some - not many - people work the look.

echt · 04/04/2012 04:39

Gardening only. One pair at the front door, one at the back.
And not Crocs, the $4 ones from the cheap shop down the road.

zombiemum · 04/04/2012 11:25

I LOVE Crocs, but wouldn't be caught dead in the clog type ones. As someone earlier mentioned, Crocs Olivia, Alice and Jayna are some of the best looking. I've just bought Crocs A-Leigh wedge from Amazon, 2.5 inch cork-style wedge with the legendary croc footbed. Massaging nubs on the footbed, never get smelly and never stain. Perfect!

MrsChemist · 04/04/2012 11:30

Best chef shoes DH has ever worn.

Ugly as sin, but they've lasted him nearly a year, whereas any other shoes would have fallen to bits after about 3 weeks.

For that alone, I love them.

drywhiteplease · 04/04/2012 11:39

Yuck

anniewoo · 04/04/2012 16:00

Wouldn't wear them out but they are my 'summer slippers'. So comfy. As are my Fitflops. Love my Fitflop boots too. Have the worst feet in the world - so sensitive -the underside burns if i walk in them even in a lowish heel- i still do though- anything for vanityWink
