Highlights advice what shall I ask for?

I am having my hair coloured for the 1st time in about 2 years. I want highlights of some kind but want them to look OK for a long while as I know I won't get round to/afford to have them done again for sometime.

I have long dark blond hair that 90% of the time I wear in a messy bun or ponytail.

I want some highlights that will show up well when I wear my hair up but won't be really obvious that they are growing out if that makes sense.

I thought some biggish chunks of colour on the underneath layers might work but last time I tried to explain this to a hair dresser the result was barely noticable.

Is there a name for what I want?! I can't find a picture that demonstrates it

Biggish chunks are called "slices"

I guess don't get any through your parting at all.

Not sure what it's called when you get highlights 'underneath'

Or get your hair ombred, will look lovely when its in a ponytail, and you will never get roots/ can cut it out if you get bored.

Agree to avoid the parting. Generally "slices" tend to be an underneath thing anyway, these days, though in the old days, well, think <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=data.whicdn.com/images/2882842/tumblr_l522emXIIH1qad94ro1_500_thumb.jpg%3F1278387247&imgrefurl=weheartit.com/tag/ginger%2520spice&usg=__MA36FoBdlOjzKKmF16oAw6MFoxs=&h=200&w=240&sz=41&hl=en&start=12&sig2=P5FslLZb-teW-mK3iTajqA&zoom=1&tbnid=yOlLqVNbgZNQiM:&tbnh=130&tbnw=162&ei=4kd1TZCQL4q04Aav1IDBCQ&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dginger%2Bspice%2Bhair%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1090%26bih%3D438%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C329&itbs=1&biw=1090&bih=438&iact=rc&dur=156&oei=1Ud1TcahMou1hAe8_v1J&page=2&ndsp=13&ved=1t:429,r:8,s:12&tx=96&ty=53" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Ginger Spice

But finer highlights would simply lighten the whole effect, leaving you with dark roots quite soon, whereas slices, underneath in particular, dont actually lighten the whole effect - they are light in their own right, but your base colour remains and just takes on a sunkissed look and when your roots grown in they dont look odd because they match the basic overall effect of your hair, which has simply been enhanced by the slices.
