Any tips on how to have great hair?

My hair is straight and is looking rough.
Its getting frizzy and dry and I need to colour the greys.

I know part of it is getting older but I used to have naturally lovely silky glossy hair (complete strangers used to comment on my hair sob)
I'd love to get it back to some decent condition.

Any product tips?

Get a good cut and colour and ask the hairdresser what they would use. Most suggest a once a week hair masque/conditioning treatment.

Babyliss Big Hair. Grin

Kerastase do something called a 'ritual' at their licensed salons. It's a two-stage conditioning heat treatment with two products called (I think) Vita Ciment and Topseal. You can't buy it to do yourself, though they do a less effective top-up version for home use.

I had it done every fortnight for three months before I got married and my hair looked amazing. Couldn't afford to keep it up, sadly, as it's about £20 a time on top of the regular cost. It's the secret to Kate Middleton's hair, by the way. I went to the same salon.

oh I'm evangelical about this!
I have finally got my nice hair back three years after my last baby Smile and your hair sounds quite similar to mine.
Don't wash it too often i.e. only 2-3 times a week if you can bear it.
Aveda colour gives great condition, but my hairdresser recommended only covering up the greys with my natual colour and then putting a subtle reddish semi-permanent on top for condition and a bit of a lift. Don't go for a permanent colour that is drastically different to your own or you will have to get the roots done all the time.
But the biggest difference I think has been using L'occitane shampoos - not cheap but I think all their products are just great and the repairing shampoo and conditioner (no 5) made a huge difference.
Hope that helps!

I don't think this time of year helps - months of damp/cold and then central heating and air conditioning.

Get advice from a good hairdresser - and some sunshine - God, we need it don't we?

I have always had good skin but mine has been awful this winter.

Do you take any vitamin/mineral supplements? There are some which are meant to help hair, such as Perfectil (which is for skin, hair and nails).

Shaxx · 04/03/2011 18:06

Great tips thanks.
I'll get some L'occitane, babyliss big hair, some vitamins (I take none at the moment but I really do need to) and make an appointment with hairdresser.

I've just had a week of sunshine and thats made no difference. I'm willing to try again though Smile

My hair has been like this for a few years now just not the same as it used to be. It resulted in me cutting it all off which I regret but I am taking action to get it back. Thanks to dry shampoo I Have cut down to two washes per week one of which I am having done at the hairdresser and I have invested in a Redken protein shampoo.

morrocan oil [scuttles away] Grin fab for transforming knackered locks

mosaica · 04/03/2011 22:22

Shaxx, after you have bought L'Occitane, Babyliss, etc, will you update us? I'd like to know if the above products really have made a difference. Good luck!

Shaxx · 05/03/2011 11:09

Mosaica I'm going to get the shampoo and vits on Monday and I'm ordering the babyliss online so will hopefully get it during the week.
I'm also trying coconut oil as someone recommended that to me.
I'll come and update in a weeks time Smile

I had this too! I used to get stopped all the time when younger and asked to model for various hairdressers, but when I got to about 37 is just dried up! sob! but also Grin

I've got it back though, mainly doing things that have already been suggested:

Switched to a moisturising, decent shampoo (redken allsoft in my case, massive one from ebay)

Use deep conditioner ALL the time, leave on for 15 mins (using Umberto Giannini Spa Rituals Moisture Replenishing Hair Mask from boots - the smell is amazing) here hairdresser told me to slightly towel-dry hair before smothering it on and wrapping in towel

while still wet smooth on a couple of pumps of the eye-wateringly expensive morocan hair oil

And finally, was lucky enough to be GIVEN a bighair by MIL who had bought one trying to replace her old hot air brush and unaware of the size of the barrel

I'll try and put a pic of my wedding hair on my profile if I can (the result of all this investment!) - you'll have to imagine the straw-like frizz that it was before :)

I was amazed, I never really realised that one CAN affect the condition of one's hair so much - but I suppose you can ruin it, so why not improve it too?

Oooh, I took a 'hair skin and nails' supplement too...

Good luck!

Shaxx · 08/03/2011 20:09

Knitknack great to hear that you've been able to improve your hair. It gives me hope Smile

I didn't get L'occitane as I couldn't find it but ended up having a consultation with Aveda. I got a couple of samples and I'm really impressed already.
Just after one wash my hair is sleeker and smoother. Hooray Smile

I got some vits too.

VO5 Hot Oil - I love it!

Get your hair in good condition before you colour as it could be too porous and the therefore the colour could be slightly patchy.

phooey · 08/03/2011 20:22

Kerastase Masquintense. Rebuilds hair, is protein rich and amazing. I paid £25 for a treatment with it as an add-on in a salon and can't live without it now. Well I can, but my hair is fluffy and frizzy and dry-looking. I use the one for fine hair and it makes my hair much thicker when used once a week, you can get a huge pot for £40 on EBay which'll last months as you only need a tiny bit.

tulpe · 08/03/2011 22:34

Second vote for Kerastase Masque Intense. I also use L'Oreal Full Restore 5 shampoo and conditioner. Fab stuff.

dexter73 · 08/03/2011 22:37

I have been using the Argan oil for about a fortnight now and it is amazing!
