Hair colour when allergic to hair dye

I used to have my hair coloured professionally in chestnut/reddish shades. But I've developed an allergy to the dye so have been au natural (ie drk brown with grey mixed in) for a couple of years and felt ok with it UNTIL I saw a pic of myself yesterday, from a couple of years ago. Gah! Have realised I now look so old in comparison. Menopause hasn't helped (spots, crappy skin tone, general sagging and that's with hrt).

Anyone any experience with non-allergenic hair dye? I used to use henna years ago but it was a palaver and very obvious. Please help before I order custom-made bag to go over head permanently.

I too have an allergy to hair dye, I have found that I can use the really cheap DIY ones.

They have to be the really cheap ones tho, as in my case it seems to be the strength of a certain chemical in them that causes my allergy.

My fave dye is Aldi's , they are cheap but very good quality.

Oh forgot to mention- I looked into using natural henna , but it seems that if you have an allergy , it can sometimes flare up with henna too .

I am also allergic to dye, however I have been having highlights for years. When they put it on with foils the colour does not touch your scalp - honest. I tell every new hairdresser, don't even bother doing a patch test I WILL be allergic to it, no matter how lovely you tell me the range you use is ;). But I have never had a problem with highlights. So I think when I need more coverage I will have to have colour done using foils.

I am definately also allergic to henna. Had a henna tattoo once in my twenties and had the red scar on my arm for about a year afterwards!

Thanks snail - I'd forgotten about highlights. Not sure how they work with grey hair but will chat with lovely hairdresser.

I am allergic to hair dye too and I use henna from Lush to cover my grey hair and perk up my colour. It gives a lovely shine and has never irritated me in the 3 years I have used it.
