just their very website and cheery irritating crap for a start.

their pregnancy style tops in curtain fabric

their a line skirts

their "Ooh so kooky" knitted tights

all together - it grates

I love their socks Grin

It's quite amusing reading such strong feeling. If you like it, shop it. If you don't, don't. It doesn't matter either way, or what other people think.

Love and peace people Smile

our local white stuff has a PLAYHOUSE....DD1 loves going there for that reason, so I have a couple of purchases from there as probably the longest we are able to stay in a shop with her....

although they pissed me off recently when DH had got me a white top for Christmas and it got a hole in it after two or three wears, just where there must have been a flaw in the fabric, the guy was like "what did you do to it" and made me feel like i was trying to rip them off, he did replace it in the end

PlanetEarth · 04/03/2011 09:03

Don't know what you've got against White Stuff. Till recently I did think they didn't have much I liked, but I just thought "Not my style" rather than "Terrible!" Anyway, this season there's loads I like and my favourite skirt is from there, in fact I'm wearing it right now, so there!

I sometimes think the pundits on Style and Beauty are not happy unless we're spending £££'s (admittedly White Stuff not cheap-as-chips) on Anglomania/Phase Eight/Jaeger that, even if I could afford them, I don't have occasion to wear.

MissRead · 04/03/2011 09:25

I like some of their plainer stuff - denim skirts, plain tunics and tops, knitwear - and the accessories and jewellery are very nice. Although the stuff is quite pricey it does last so is probably worth splashing out on now and then. The stores are lovely as well, pleasant to shop in even with kids.

But I don't like the very colourful, heavily patterned stuff that always ends up in the sales that they sell and the website/ezines/brochures irritate the hell out of me.

Do agree that we could use a more realistic thread on here for those of us who like to look nice but are on more of a New Look and occasionally White Stuff backed up with charity shops and Ebay budget.

lucykate · 04/03/2011 10:28

i like white stuff. but it's the same as any shop to me, i don't like everything they do, but there's the odd thing i really like. only buy in the sales though as it is overpriced, as are most retailers these days.

used to like boden, not so much these days. quite like zara and esprit atm.

iWILLdothis · 04/03/2011 11:01

another big White Stuff fan here.... and guess what I'm wearing today? Yes, my lovely soft with cashmere grey snuggly jumper from there Grin
And what, may I ask, is wrong with layering with vests?????????? Everybody is doing it.

Emo76 · 04/03/2011 11:58

Hating it the most in the world seems a bit harsh! I'm sure there are some better candidates for a complete slating. How about Fat Face? - same styles but in already faded colours.

mippy · 04/03/2011 12:02

I like them, but they need to stop doing tunic and empire-line stuff. I like a lot of their knitwear but the seam they put in hits my nipples. Useless if you're not a standard pattern-size C-cup.

Pancakeflipper · 04/03/2011 12:11

I don't worship everything in their stores ( except that gorg sales assistant) but this white top of theirs with pockets at the front is ideal for stashing tissues in when your toddler has a green snot nose. Great design concept guys.

I like our nearest store. Stuff for my kids to do. The staff are lovely, cheery and enthusiastic. All sales staff should be like that - but they aren't.

carlywurly · 04/03/2011 19:15

I normally like it, but this season is dire, it's all got far too samey. Young WI wear is spot on. I got a voucher for my birthday and had trouble spending it.

Not really loving anywhere particularly atm though. Don't know if that's just me.

Heroine · 04/03/2011 19:17

I love white stuff - go to a shop with white wardrobes costing £1000 then go to a small indie with a catalogue in the back with exactly the same stock and supplier and get them for £500 even including the 60% mark-up of that small retailer :)

carlywurly · 04/03/2011 20:03

heroine, I don't understand. Is it the wine I've drunk? Confused

carryon · 04/03/2011 20:42

Agree. I hate it too. I also can't stand Boden with their frumpy, patterned brightly coloured clothing and the little quips from their models in their magazines. Biscuit to Johnny and WS.

southeastastra · 04/03/2011 20:43

phase 8 is pretty shite too

cabbageroses · 04/03/2011 21:10

Heroine- are you getting confused? This is about white stuff not the white company- who does sell wardrobes.

Heroine · 05/03/2011 09:14

oooooh yes Blush ahem...I am sure roughly the same principle applies... cough...

mippy · 05/03/2011 10:02

I got a £10 voucher from Boden, and need a cardigan, but there was nothing on there that would look decent on me. Even the vests, which would be practically free, looked a bit crappy.

nappydaysagain · 05/03/2011 14:20

Well I like there stuff!! Obviously I don't like everything, the same as I don't in most shops. The few bits I have bought suit me.

GeorgeEliot · 05/03/2011 18:05

I hate that I am a White Stuff clone - every time I buy something from there I see someone else in the school playground wearing the same thing (even stuff I've had for a couple of years) although usually that person has an even bigger bottom than me. Which worries me.

But what are the alternatives to White Stuff and the even more dreadful Boden for us middle-class and middle-aged mums?

withagoat · 05/03/2011 18:05

gap

zara

olivertulliver · 05/03/2011 19:20

I went through a bit of a crush phase with White Stuff and bought masses.

I went in recently and an assistant said to me, 'you're always in here!'.

Haven't been in since!

Plus it was starting to feel like my 'mummy' uniform.

NinkyNonker · 05/03/2011 20:24

I have a fair amount of stuff from WS. Where I used to live had the princely choice of on the high street:

  • White Stuff
  • Henri Lloyd
  • T&G
  • Jack Wills
  • Fat Face
  • Sea Salt
  • Joules
  • Surf shop

I don't get the mummy uniform thing, maybe I was just old before my time as I was wearing this stuff in my teens. Blush

EllieorOllie · 05/03/2011 21:57

The other day I saw this thread and thought it seemed a bit harsh.

Today I spent almost an hour in WS trying to find just one thing that I liked to spend a voucher from xmas on. OMG. Nothing fitted, the sizing was awful. Ended up with a very plain 100% linen shirt, it was the only thing I could even contemplate buying. Everything else made my head hurt just looking at it...

Gogopops · 06/03/2011 09:07

Generally I like their stuff and I've bought a lot from them but their sizings are all over the place and sometimes quality not particularly good (small holes develop quite quickly as the cotton material in tops and tunics so thin).
Their jewellery and scarves are great. Like other posters I usually wait for the sales for the more gaudy colourful stuff.

Dunoon · 06/03/2011 13:38

I have just fallen in love with white stuff and bought a great skirt, two vests and a cardi. All fabulous.
It is a bit pricey though for me. And I do feel like a Mummy in it all. But hey I am a mummy.
I had a good look around gap and could find nothing I remotely wanted to buy.
