Thick jersey cotton tops

Hi all,

I'm trying to replace the old tat in my wardrobe and need a few basics. I've tried on several tops recently (vest t-shirts, long-sleeved jersey tops etc) but I'm finding most are really thin fabric which clings to my lumps and bumps (i.e. tummy, love-handles)... most unflattering! My older ones were much thicker and more forgiving. Where can I get such things now?

Real shops preferred to on-line stores so I can try them on. Oh, and for plain basics I don't want to pay a fortune.

Bumping - I too want thicker tops, esp white ones - fgs why do they make them literally see through?!

watching with interest as I have been less than impressed with some of the jersey tops on offer at present.

H&M do some lovely breton tops (in a range of colours) which are thicker fabric and not at all clingy. They aren't available online unfortunately but are in store.

I find Gap tshirts are quite nice, thick enough and stretchy. Not expensive either and they have a few different styles and colours.

The fat face tops I have wash well

I bought a "thicker" vest top in Kew last week. I too wanted less of the cling.

Will have another look at Gap. I have a couple of vest tops from there that are OK but still thinner than my old ones. Looked at Kew yesterday (in John Lewis) but seemed fairly expensive, and they didn't have my size in stock (I'm a 12, nothing unusual!) East seemed a bit thicker, but £22 for a vest top? Fat Face - tried a pinky one on, too clingy. I have older stuff of theirs that's fine, it's just this year - I heard the price of cotton went up, but really, how much does the cotton cost as a percentage of the total? Confused Bought a White Stuff jersey top - also fairly thin, but the shape meant it didn't cling. John Lewis's own brand was thicker but they only had round necks and they weren't long enough to meet my jeans, thus revealing even more flab Blush.

Are you anywhere near a Gap outlet? I got a long sleeve tee for something like £7 last week, it's not amazing, but it's absolutely fine

I really like Uniqlo, their cotton is a good weight and washes well, I've got three of their 3/4 sleeve t shirts and a couple of vest tops and none have shrunk. I started shopping around last year for the same reason, good old trusty M&S changed the cotton they were using and the t-shirts I bought from them were foul, really thin clingy fabric that shrunk after one wash.

No Gap outlet or Uniqlo nearby unfortunately. Had a look at the Uniqlo website but the pictures aren't convincing me (hard to tell though).

I got a Hobbs stripy one (£35 with £25 off) that is thick cotton and not too clingy.

Uniqlo are on da web

Another vote for H&M LS tops. Some are thin but most are thick and long enough and also have a bit of stretch in them so hold their shape well. I also like M&S Limited Collection and Gap but find they tend to be thinner.

PlanetEarth · 04/03/2011 20:45

Tried H&M, not bad but they were all too long and stuck out below the clothes I want to layer them with - and not in a trendy way!

Got a couple of plain black ones today at M&S outlet, but the question isn't really answered as the current M&S range didn't have anything.
