(How) can I wear skirts in the summer?

Having always been a trousers girl, this winter I discovered a love for skirts and dresses. I keep seeing lovely ones coming out for the spring/summer, but I am nervous...

I wear my skirts with opaque tights and boots and love them, but I'm not so keen on my legs in the nude... I have slim but knobbly knees and muscular (but fat-looking) calves. I'm worried about looking silly. What shape/length skirt is best? I'm a size 14.

A-line skirts to just below the knee look fab on most people.

Or wear shorter ones with leggings instead of tights to cover your knees.

Pencil skirts are also very flattering if your curvy.

I have exactly the same problem JennyW. All my winter skirts (worn with boots) are A-line below the knee but it doesn't work for me for the summer. I think the length is key - avoid anything that ends at the widest part of your calf. I tend to go longer - a couple of inches longer than mid-calf (especially with wedge heels) or a full length maxi or bias-cut skirt with flats (eg. birkenstocks).

I stick with maxi length skirts/dressses with flat gladiator type sandals (loads of them in the shops this year). Just too self conscious otherwise. Plus I dont need to worry about tanning/waxing either : )

A line skirts that end on the knee are best, if not poss then just above knee is far pref to below knee.

Buy a can of Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs, absolutely amazing stuff and transformed me last summer!

Thank you! I think I'm going to arm myself with a can of spray and a positive attitude and risk it - at least once :)
