Online shopping - what are your habits?

It's only in the last couple of years that I have started ordering clothes online. Initially only ordered things a few times that were very "safe" like t-shirts that I had bought before. Then I grew bolder and had some successes with items from the outnet.

However, in the last couple of weeks went a bit bad and ordered a few things but they are all going back. And to be honest the whole experience of having to arrange couriers to send them back, etc. is putting me off.

Do you shop online much? Do you end up sending lots of things back?

I only buy from sites where returns are free or I can take back to a store

moragbellingham · 25/02/2011 13:33

Free /delivery returns for me too. I think alot of places will refund postage costs if things are sent back within 7 days (even if it's not obviously displayed on the website). I would check first.

The Post Office is my second home. No courier returns.

It's necessity really as I can't try on in store very often.

Bunbaker · 25/02/2011 13:37

I am not a standard shape or size and have to try everything on. So I don't do online shopping. I do online window shopping though and then go to the store(s) to try the clothes on and buy if they fit.

lackaDaisy · 25/02/2011 13:55

I only buy from online shops that have free returns. Shops that insist on charging for returns don't get my custom

I much prefer online shopping to real-life shopping. Clothes come to your house, you can try it on in comfort and in your own time. I also like that I can try stuff on with other clothes I own so I can make a better decision about the new purchase.

I went shopping in town yesterday as a "treat". It was AWFUL!! I had to muscle my way through throngs of people, and had to trudge through over-heated shops carrying my coat. I couldn't make much of a judgement on clothes when they were thrown on the rack so had to grab everything that caught my fancy. Then a huge queue at the fitting rooms, then try clothes on in a cubicle barely bigger than a coffin Hmm. And I had to walk miles and miles between shops (the ones I like are really spread out from each other) carrying bags. THEN when I was ready to leave I had to wait in my car in a loooong queue to get out of the car park Shock Plus I had to pay £15 for parking for four hours. FIFTEEN POUNDS!!!!! And what did I come home with? One top and one shrug Hmm

I'm so sticking to online shopping from now.

Slight hijack of thread - for which I apologise Blush - but does anyone know if Gap do free returns or let you return in store??

gregssausageroll · 25/02/2011 14:19

I usually check quidco to see cashback as well as delivery/returns offers but yes, I clothes shop alot on line.

carat · 25/02/2011 15:48

I can't stand queueing at the post office, so if I can't return it in store, then I won't buy it.

carciofi · 25/02/2011 15:52

Dairymoo, you can return in store.

Wit a toddler, online shopping is easier and quidco/discounts are a bonus, but if I am on my own, I love to go in and browse in the shops. I also hate paying for returns.

TrillianAstra · 25/02/2011 15:54

If returns are free but delivery is charged, I often buy multiple sizes/colours of the same thing toget over the "Free delivery if you spend £X" barrier, then send back the wrong sizes/colours.

dairymoo · 25/02/2011 17:21

Thanks carciofi, good to know.

TA - that's a great way to get over the free delivery barrier - but don't they charge you in arrears? Seems to good to be true!

TrillianAstra · 25/02/2011 17:23

If you order over £X of stuff, they deliver it for free. You could return the whole lot if you wanted.

moragbellingham · 25/02/2011 17:29

Yep, me too. Just but another size and take it back to get it over the free delivery limit. Chances are you'll be returning something anyway!!

Meggles76 · 25/02/2011 19:25

Yes, you can return GAP in store Smile

I do a lot of online shopping (Boden, M&S, Monsoon, Gap, Next, Kew, JL, Topshop, Joules to name but a few!!)

I always try and ensure that I at least get free postage and, if possible, at least 10% off. I also prefer sites where you can return through their shops for a speedy refund if unsuitable.

A big parcel from the postman makes my day Grin

Bunbaker · 28/02/2011 12:39

lackadaisy I work part time, and can go clothes shopping at quieter times. I find it far easier to go into a changing room with say, a pair of trousers in medium and long in a 10 and 12 than to faff around waiting for the postman and then trailing to the post office to return things.

Jeans, bras and shoes are things I would never, ever buy online because the fit is so crucial.
