Brogues - a one season trend?

tryingtoleave · 24/02/2011 22:24

I'm in Australia, so we're just heading into autumn and I'm feeling very tempted by all the brogues that are appearing in the shops. But I've just bought one pair of on trend shoes so I don't want to get something else that will just last me one season. So, what do you think? - are they going to be around for a while or is it just a fleeting trend?

It's hard to say, they've been in fashion for a few years now. Although they do say that in a recession fashion trends move on much more slowly.

tryingtoleave · 24/02/2011 22:52

Really? I hadn't noticed - although I have been in a bit of a fashion black hole.

I dont agreee that brogues have been in fashion for a while

BUT I do think they will stay around as a nice flat for a couple of years

tryingtoleave · 24/02/2011 23:04

That's what I want to hear, cybil - go on, enable me Grin.

I've been wearing them for about 3 years and have since got another two pairs Blush they're brilliant and versatile. Does Yoox ship to Aus they usually have a good range.

youngblowfish · 24/02/2011 23:54

Watching with interest as I have three pairs in different colours and love them to bits. I might keep wearing them even when they inevitably become passé a few seasons down the line.

tryingtoleave · 24/02/2011 23:57

Now I'm getting jealous! Maybe they'll replace ballet flats? They've been around for ages...

I don't think I could order shoes from os - it would cost too much to have them delivered and then probably have to send them back.

You are welcome to disagree tryingtoleave, but I am telling the truth! I am a lover of 1940s style and so I keep my eye open for stuff on the high street that works with my vintage style.

A Google search for Brogues 2008 brought up a few things that prove I am not making this up ...

From a fashion blog;

"A few seasons ago, feminine brogues appeared as a classy new trend. For Winter 2007-2008, Tara Jarmon released a patent leather grey lace-up brogue for women. The following winter season, Chie Mihara debuted her leather high-heeled brogues in blue, green and brown, perfect for a retro look. "

This question thread, especially the links to all sorts of high street shoe shops that were stocking brogues at the time might also quell your doubts

It wasn't me that disagreed! I have been living in playgroup world for a few years and am not in a very fashionable place anyway, so I may well have missed the trend.

But it does sound like you were an early adopter? I'm sure if the shops were as overrun with brogues a few years ago as they are now even I would have noticed.

Sorry, I mean't civilliberty - my apologies. Got your posts muddled up!

FrancesFarmer · 25/02/2011 00:58

I got my brogues about three years ago but they were rare back then. I think they have staying power but it's had to tell for certain.

tryingtoleave · 25/02/2011 04:15

For those who are experienced brogue wearers - would you wear them with ankle socks and a skirt?

I saw 2 girls in London yesterday dressed in floral dresses, black opaque tights and brown brogues. They were together. They looked AWFUL, probably mostly because they were dressed like eachother. But brogues look frumpy IMHO.

muminthesun · 25/02/2011 08:03

I started a similar thread looking for a pair of heeled brogues/shoeboots.

Tethersend- linked to a lovely tan pair,I cant do links but didnt think they were frumpy, what you think?

sahminspain · 25/02/2011 08:05

I remember my friend buying a heeled pair from Top Shop about three years ago.

BikeRunSki · 25/02/2011 08:16

Mid Heel Brogue

I bought a pair of these a couple of weeks - was also concerned about flat brogues looking a bit frumpy. These look great with skirts/dresses trousers.

Sadly, the heels wore down loads (through the rubber, into the wooden heel block) after 4 wears (I worked out I must have walked less than 2 miles in them), but Office did give me my money back, no problem.

They were lovely though, v comfy straight from the box and made my big Gruffalo feet look quite dainty.

cybilliberty · 25/02/2011 08:17

Not sure I can carry off ankle socks anymore, as I'm nearly 41

BUT a slim brown calf in a pale colored brogue with a little dress/skirt does look nice

I wear with rolled up trews too

Havingkittens · 25/02/2011 08:19

I have black and cream patent brogues which I wear with wide legged trousers. I'm not keen on the flat brogues with dresses or skirts personally.

I have had a couple of high heeled pairs for at least 4 years, both from New Look. Unfortunately I can't really do heels because problem feet but on the rare occasions that I have worn them it was with a pencil skirt and blouse or 40s style jumper.

youngblowfish · 25/02/2011 13:42

Another one scared of the ankle sock with brogues look on myself - a little too lolita, but probably great on teenagers.

I wear mine with opaques and dresses or <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=3.bp.blogspot.com/_WOKdJNiH71w/S7PS0nNvdrI/AAAAAAAAH0A/dAPukWjZb4M/s1600/d8.jpg&imgrefurl=golestaneh-streetstyle.blogspot.com/2010/04/streetstyle0160-white-pants-nude-blouse.html&usg=__K_c9YTlO_gpJkvdRFz9JVdwstyA=&h=1211&w=808&sz=284&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=cHSd9bJTrpjwSM:&tbnh=125&tbnw=83&ei=Jq5nTaegAoGHhQfBu6WyDQ&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dzara%2Bbrogues%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26biw%3D1152%26bih%3D537%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=588&vpy=47&dur=51&hovh=275&hovw=183&tx=119&ty=147&oei=Jq5nTaegAoGHhQfBu6WyDQ&page=1&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">like this. In fact, that is the exact pair I have in three different colours. Oops, and I just remembered I do also own a heeled pair in different shades of grey suede. Until this thread, I was quite unaware I had a problem Blush.

FrancesFarmer · 25/02/2011 18:41

I think they would look awful with ankle socks.

I wear mine with wide-legged trousers or a miniskirt and tights.
