Really??

That's over £170 per month.

I reckon I spend about £30 per month.

you've got to be kidding

I must spend £800 a year absolute tops. And I'm including toothpaste and deodorant in that.

Blackduck · 21/02/2011 17:57

More like £30 a quarter here....

anon80 · 21/02/2011 17:57

I spend no where near £170 amonth.

Meggles76 · 21/02/2011 17:59

I would guess that I spend an average of £70 per month. That includes hair cuts and colours, make up, toiletries etc...

MarionCole · 21/02/2011 18:00

£30 per month includes £34 haircut every 8 weeks. I just cannot conceive of £170 per month. On what? And that's average.

Looks like a lot to me. But after getting pregnant, I suddenly had hundreds of 'extra' pounds each month.

It was because I cancelled my gym membership (£70 per month in and of itself) and stopped experimenting with every single new product that came on the market. I can totally believe that any other woman without kids would manage to spend a similar amount.

Still, looking back, what a waste ...

Mahraih · 21/02/2011 18:06

Not that I spent hundreds btw! A lot of the savings came from alcohol, clothes etc.

I now spent about £40 per month which seems a lot more reasonable.

notyummy · 21/02/2011 18:58

Hmm, yes. I easily do I reckon. Combination of 'products' - don't buy a ridiculous amount, but probably a tube or jar a month that costs £35/£40. A massage most months.

Clothes/shoes - spend fluctuates, but I buy something every month - some months only 1 or 2....some months 4 or 5.

I may well spend more than that - but it is hard to say. If you factor in things my Dh buys me that are clothes/beauty related as gifts then it is differently a lot more.

I am doing AVCs and ISA as well though - and it doesn't go on a credit card...and I give to charity Grin

notyummy · 21/02/2011 19:00

Oh, and I don't have a gym membership - lots of running and a few DVDs instead. Saves a fortune. There is a a 'pay as you go' gym around the corner from my work that is great as I could never have the time to go enough to justify a membership, but at £4 a visit then I can manage it occasionally for some excerise variety.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/02/2011 19:11

Its no wonder I look so dog rough then.

I sepend £20 on a haircut every 6-8 weeks. I dye my own hair when there's too much grey.

I buy moistoriser and scrub/face wash as needed. Maybe 2 or 3 of each a year at £15-£20 a time.

I'd probably need 2 foundations a year at £22 each and maybe one bronzer as well.

Then I get the odd lipstick, mascara, eyeshadow.

GrimmaTheNome · 21/02/2011 19:23

I do have offpeak gym membership, but don't spend much on hair - just shampoo and conditioner, £20 trim 2-3 times a year. Fortunately a natural blonde which still shows no sign of grey.

Don't seem to need moisturiser either so just a bit of foundation for special occasions, and the odd lippy and toenail varnish.

MarionCole · 21/02/2011 19:44

notyummy I think that figure excludes clothes/shoes.

OP posts:
Goober · 21/02/2011 19:46

£170 a year. Yes.

notyummy · 21/02/2011 19:51

Aah! Right. Well, I probably still manage it Blush. Only get hair cut 2/3 times a year, but probably 4 or 5 other blowdrys. Massages. 'Products'. May be nearer £120/150 actually.

NancyDrewHadaClue · 21/02/2011 19:55

Easily done I'd say.

Cut and highlights £140 every 6-8 weeks

Waxing (bikini underarm) £56 evry month

Threading (eyebrows top lip) £8 per month

Pedicure £30 per month

Make up £20 per month (I would guess)

Toiletries £20 per month (I would guess)

So that is £204 - bloody hell I need to sit down Blush!

And that doesn't take into account the occassional facials, massages and manicures.

jenandberry · 21/02/2011 19:59

You spend £56 on waxing every month!

I do cut and colour every six weeks £100
Threading - £15
I alternate predicure and manicure £30
Massage twice a month - not sure how much that even is!
Shampoo about £30

General toileties and makeup £50 ish

I also have the odd facial or extra treatment.

It is quite easily done.

MarionCole · 21/02/2011 20:06

I'm starting to feel scuzzy.
Shave rather than wax.
Pluck my eyebrows with tweezers.
Colour my own hair.

OP posts:
NancyDrewHadaClue · 21/02/2011 20:12

Yep - it was more as I used to do legs as well but I now epilate those. Tried to epilate my underarms once and decided that £56 for waxing my more sensitive bits was money well spent Grin

phooey · 21/02/2011 20:29

Yikes! I spend about £200 on clothes, but beauty?

Neutrogena pink grapefruit scrub £4
Olay peptidey moisturiser £20
Nivea £3
Shower cream £3
Shampoo £4
Posh conditioner £20
Serum £5
Make-up £10 average topping up (I don't wear it every day)

phooey · 21/02/2011 20:33

Actually this might sound cheesy - and I'm the vainest person I know - my beauty activities are drinking loads of water, vitamin pills, expensive food and trying to get as many hours sleep as possible.

jenandberry · 21/02/2011 20:51

I do all that as well phooey, I suspect nature may need a little more help where I am concerned. Grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 21/02/2011 20:57

jen - you spend £30 a month on shampoo??

I like expensive hair products, but £30 (£22 on shampoo and £11 on conditioner) lasts me for 6+ months!

I probably spend £50 per month. I get my hair done alternating months for £27 and the occasional pedicure. The rest is toiletries.

cabbageroses · 21/02/2011 21:03

I reckon that is not hard to do- 4 haircuts /colour a year cost me around £500 including fares.

day and night creams £35 a go- probably 3 of each a year- that's another £200.

Then there is make up, clothes, shampoo..
IF this includes clothes- not if it's just cosmetics and skin care.

cabbageroses · 21/02/2011 21:06

it's a stupid survey typical Mail- says £289 on complexions- so the overall total includes gym, classes etc.

exexpat · 21/02/2011 21:19

It does say 'research by TV shopping channel QVC' - I would guess it's a fairly biased sample (people who spend hundreds of pounds on naff jewellery advertised on late night tv?) and is very unlikely to include women like me - get my hair cut once or twice a year, don't wear make up, use face wash and moisturiser but that's about it, don't go to the gym (my exercise of choice is dog walking), don't use fake tan, don't wax etc. I think I probably spend less than £200 a year on my appearance.
