Where do I buy trousers for my super skinny 4 year old?

DS is about to turn 4. He's been needing new trousers for a while now but anything long enough in the leg is too wide at the waist!

Even the ones with the adjustable waist are too big and they look so uncomfortable too. Once I've pulled them in to their maximum, there's so much bunched up fabric round the back that they can't be comfy and they're still hanging off his hips anyway - not to mention looking a bit daft with the big, puffed up bottom.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might be able to get trousers in a slimmer style that might fit? I've made his jeans last a bit longer by unpicking the turn ups but that's just not going to work with his pre school trousers!

Slim/Skinny fit in Next, or H&M have some, cords etc.

chabbychic · 20/02/2011 19:55

No idea, watching this thread!

JoyceBarnaby · 20/02/2011 19:58

Sorry, no advice - just adding my sympathy and marking my place because I have exactly the same problem with my DS!

Blatherskite · 20/02/2011 20:01

Will check out Next and H&M. Thanks Flutterbye.

Looks like there is a sale opporunity out there that lots of shops are missing with all these skinny little boys!!

M&S can be good. My 4 yar old is pretty skinny, I find going small is the way to go, luckily he also has very short legs so is still in some 2-3 stuff from Next Grin. Sainsbury fit big but they often do some good trousers that come with roll ups, supposed to wear them long when cold and rolled up when hot but ds just wears them rolled up all the time.

Noseypoke · 20/02/2011 20:06

Zara, but buy the size down as they are really long. Don't buy tesco trousers as the are ridiculously wide.

freshmint · 20/02/2011 20:07

I second H&M

Also zara, very good

And Gap do a skinny fit which is also good

Boden now do a skinny for boys which looks good - skinny girls is excellent

can you tell I have four hipless skinnies?!

freshmint · 20/02/2011 20:08

I find Next vast. Seem to design for chunky children imo

ditto anything boys boden apart from the skinny fit

jafina · 20/02/2011 20:09

Boden skinny jeans are good, but for something cheaper try Vertbaudet slim fit.

Iatemyskinnyperson · 20/02/2011 20:09

my DS1 is exactly the same. Best fit by far has been Mexx here. They are pricey, I usually only get them in the sales.

Zara are next best, but they are freakishly long, I usually size down.

my children have freakishly long legs which is why zara works for us and going down an age doesn't!!!

freaks

gegs73 · 20/02/2011 20:17

DS1 has very long skinny legs and the only ones I can find to fit him that don't bunch around the waist and bum like a nappy are skinny jeans from Gap. They also have adjustable waists so you can make them even slimmer fit.

Blatherskite · 20/02/2011 20:39

Ds is of the long, long legs variety which is why the next size down but with the turn-ups unpicked works so well with jeans.

Will definitely check out some of these suggestions though. I've got a Vertbaudet account but have never tried thier boys trousers yet.

H&M and look out roll ups that you can let down is always my plan.
Then just wait and Pray for warmer weather so DS can go back into his 12-18M shorts that he has worn for the last 2 years (he is 3,1/2yr).

planestrainsautomobiles · 20/02/2011 22:59

I also have a very skinny DS (just 3) and normally go with GAP (they do a slim fit).

Have you tried Petit Bateau - their clothes are definitely on the small side (most people have to size up considerably).

hellymelly · 20/02/2011 23:10

French brands.Petit Bateau is great for slender, tallish children. My dd is six with a 21"chest,20" waist and Petit bateau is the only brand that fits well for trousers.Cheaper but still slim would be verbaudet/la redoute.French sizing is retrospective,so bear this in mind.A 4y (4ans) means 3-4. your Ds may still fit a 4y or he may need a 5y now (4-5)depending on his height.

Sanesometimes1 · 20/02/2011 23:10

Have a look in la redoute, or if your going on hols to France/Spain this year ( or know someone who is) then stock up - i've found that the european shops cater more for ( what we call skinny - but they call normal !
)

Blatherskite · 21/02/2011 08:24

Ah yes Annie, DS was still wearing 12-18m shorts last summer. He might make it up to 18-24 this year Grin

Never heard of Petit Badeau, will look them up. Mum has a La Redoute account so maybe I'll get her to get him some trousers for his birthday from there?

Measured DS tonight. He is 103cms tall and has a 48cm waist.

According to Vertbaudet, he needs age 5 trousers for his leg length and age 2 for his waist!!!

hellymelly · 26/02/2011 00:15

My six year old dd mentioned above,is only an inch bigger in the waist, she is 120cm tall, and Fits Petit bateau well (just at the end of the 6y trousers for length)So I think the 4y would fit your DS perfectly now,he might want the 5y fairly soon. Most French brands have adjustable waistbands as well as being slim to start with,so that helps. The 4y is for up to 102cm tall, but there is usually a bit of leeway in the leg length.5y is up to 108cm.

LadyBiscuit · 26/02/2011 00:23

I am waiting for summer so my DS can wear his 12-18m again. He's 100cm tall but skinny as anything. The pouffed bum thing is not a good look. He has some John Lewis trousers age 4 trousers that fit round the waist if I adjust the elasticky thing but they are way too long :(

muttimalzwei · 26/02/2011 16:50

My daughter is skinny with long legs (age 6) At the mo GAP age 5 are brilliant for her as they have great elasticated waists. Not sure what they are like for boys though. Online too now
