How can I update my look?

I have a brown chin-length bob. I'm medium height, quite slim. I usually wear dark blue jeans, stripy top and ankle boots. Always wear a cardigan/fleece as I feel the cold. I don't wear make up day to day as I don't like the feel of it and I tend to rub my eyes a lot so it goes everywhere. I looked in the mirror today and thought "Christ I look old!"

How can I update my look?

I'm not a hairdresser so don't have the right terminology but I recently had 'chunks' cut out of my bob (so it's sort of jagged around the bottom rather than one length and (I'm told) it's taken years off me. :) Even if it hasn't it looks a lot more 2010 than 1987. Might be worth a try?

Sounds good zippy! Could you post a link if possible so I can show my hairdresser?

Ok first ditch the fleece

What kind of ankle boots are we talking? and style of jeans? If you feel the cold there are ways of layering that are more up to date

you could dye your eyeleashes if you fancy the look of make up without the rub off

peasandlove · 21/02/2011 09:10

can we see a picture Grin

CeliaFate · 21/02/2011 09:12

CeliaFate · 21/02/2011 09:16

Oh sorry, they're similar to the Madison Jack ones.

jeans look like a mumsy take on a current trend, sorry

if you want wide leg jeans, gap has some good ones:
here

Lizzywishes · 21/02/2011 09:18

The fleece has to go! What about a slimmer fitting jean? Tinted eyelashes are a great idea.

cyb · 21/02/2011 09:18

Hmm. I'm sorry but I'm not a fan of the boots with the jeans. Those jeans would look better with converse and a couple of layered teeshirts

cyb · 21/02/2011 09:19

Actually if you are slim those jeans are probably hanging off you- they look huge

cyb · 21/02/2011 09:22

If you want some easy, casual outfits get some catalogues like Kew/Jigsaw/Great Plains etc and see how they put things together

CeliaFate · 21/02/2011 09:22

They're not snug, but they're not huge. I do feel mumsy. Converse are a good idea, I like the eyelash dyeing too.

What about tops? I'm ALWAYS cold (my central heating is on 25!) I have a long body and longish arms and I don't like 3/4 sleeves. Any ideas?

layer them- a fitted long sleeved tee shirt (primark do good ones, as do uniqlo) with a fitted short sleeve top over the top. it can be a little jumper if you are really cold

Bung a furry gillet over the top and bobs your uncle

VerityBrulee · 21/02/2011 14:52

I'm always cold too, lots of layers and cashmere wristwarmers are my uniform. I have built up a wardrobe of cashmere jumpers and cardigans, via sales and ebay. I wear thermal tights under my skinny jeans, and have sheepkin insoles to keep my feet warm. Ds1 has sheepskin lined converse, from Office which I sometimes wear. I saw this t-shirt in M&S, looks nice, comes in a few colours, good for layering.

Sarsaparilllla · 21/02/2011 15:35

I agree, ditch the fleece, invest in some long chunky cardis instead

If you don't wear makeup maybe you could get your eyebrows shaped, it's amazing how having themdone professionally can make you look more 'made up'

You could have some low lights in your hair, coppery or red looks nice with brown hair

Blessings3 · 21/02/2011 15:57

If you have good skin - lipstick can make you look made up with very little else - especially if you have dark or dyed eyelashes

polyhymnia · 21/02/2011 16:08

Definitely recommend eyebrow shape, plus eyebrow and eyelash dye - saves a lot of faffing about. If you don't want to wear lipstick, try a lip balm, either colourless or tinted - looks a bit more groomed and good for lips at same time.

AintMissBeehiving · 21/02/2011 16:23

Tinted moisturiser - gives a healthy glowing look.

Ashbury · 22/02/2011 10:13

I would go one way or the other with jeans - so either skinnies or wide leg. Then match your top length to your jeans, e.g. boyfriend cardies and loose, long tops with skinnies/ little cardies and close fitting tops with wide leg. Lots of layers with tops as others have suggested. Also, if you fancy wearing skirts, I'd go for denim or cord knee length - very comfy with wooly tights and boots. For new boots, have you got a Schuh near you? have a look in there for ideas. I had a chin length bob and grew it out by having the hairdresser gradually cut layers into it as it grow. It softened it a lot and it's now shoulder length. As for makeup, I'd also suggest a lip tint or sheer lipstick, really brightens the face.
