Hmmm, not sure about this style tip - what are your thoughts?

I've had a personal shop! One of the tips the shopper gave me was to wear a long-sleeved top under a shift dress in the winter.

(I already have a number of shift dresses which are great for work, but only in the spring/summer/autumn as they're sleeveless and not warm enough for the office in colder weather).

Really not sure about how this would look, or if it would be smart enough for work - I'm not in a hyper-smart workplace, but like to look neat and professional.

What does the MN style jury think? Is it a 'look'' you've seen on others or wear yourself?

I wear Heattech tops under silk shift dresses for winter. Looks smart.

I do it. I have a number of good thin, long sleeved tees and some bodies that I wear under my spring / summer dresses, teamed with thick tights and boots. Works a treat for most dresses.

I layer long sleeved t-shirts under sleeveless/short sleeved dresses for work at this time of year, along with opaque tights and heels or knee boots. So do many of the other women I work with.

Me too. You have to get the neckline right, but other than that it's dead easy.

I use H&M long sleeved plain tops, £7.99 each and they are quite thin so they don't bulk me up. It makes a huge difference to how warm I am though. But yes, the neckline has to be right.

Our dress code is business casual (so mostly people wear smart trousers and a top our blouse or something) and I layer a long sleeve top under a dress most days (prefer day dresses to trouser atm), think its a great way to make short sleeve dresses work over winter.....

palomadove · 20/02/2011 15:18

Thanks - so, presumably the neckline of the t-shirt isn't visible at all?

If you can find dresses that work summer and winter this is a good idea. Brora always have a jersey print dresses with v and u necks and3/4 sleeves, these are really warm in winter with a co ordinating Brora lace edged thermal vest underneath and cool enough for all but the warmest days in the summer.

Haven't tried wearing silk summer shift dresses with a long-sleeved top but have a number of wool (both thick and cool wool) shift / smart short-sleeved or pinafore-type dresses that I wear either with a thin turtle-neck or a white shirt. A few years ago it was my signature style and had lots of compliments, still wear it these days every now and then.

think white shirts can look chic under shift dresses in winter

Yes, do it all the time.

I do tend to make sure the arms are full length rather than 3/4 though, as well as the neckline matching. Otherwise can look a bit sloppy IMO

TobyLerone · 21/02/2011 10:11

I often do this with long-sleeved t-shirts or shirts. It looks perfectly smart.
