Thick, naturally wavy-ish hair with cow lick at front - could I have a full fringe?

I've got thick, wavy hair about armpit length which is naturally wavy (not a nice wavy, but the kind of wavy that looks like I've stuck a wet finger into a live socket). Consequently I always straighten it, as I hate it bushy wavy. It's the kind of hair that goes frizzy at the mere whiff of rain or humidity. It currently has a side parting and layers to get rid of some of the bulk, and is shaped round the front from my cheek line down. I have a cow lick at the front which I flatten with blow drying and straighteners.

I love fringes and have always wanted one. I'd really like one of those full ones, where the hair comes forward right from the crown, something like the styles on here. The ones I like are the top one, the seriously photoshopped pic of Jennifer Garner in blue dress (7th down), the one of the actress whose name escapes me in sparkly dress with really dark hair and line about heart shaped faces underneath, and the pic of Liz McClarnon.

Would I be able to do this with a/ my type of hair? and b/ a cow lick at the front?

I also want to do something about the colour but that's another thread!

Only if you want it to be the bane of your life imo. When I had a proper fringe it would curl round at the drop of a hat and drove me nuts

Mine turned into three little fat sausages hanging down over my forehead. I dreaded windy days. I clipped it up on top until it grew out.

You could laminate one I suppose.

In all seriousness, I think you have the triple anti-fringe whammy -- thick and wavy, frizzy when humid, and cows lick.

Been there, done that, had the hair disaster Blush Grin I would suit one too as my face is long and forehead wrinkled

My cow lick fought everything as there was no weight to pull the hair down, so it just fluffed up.

T&G did talk about chemical straightening of my hairline but by that point I couldnt be bothered-might be worth having a chat about it though?

It's so frustrating- you have my sympathy!!

I also have reasonably thick wavy hair (no cows lick)that I straighten. I had a full fringe cut - let's just say I have spent the last year growing it out Sad

I now have a graduated bob with lots of layers and no fringe. So much easier for me to manage!

AintMissBeehiving · 20/02/2011 07:30

I have heavy, slightly wavy hair and a cowlick. Thin fringes are much more difficult to manage ime because there is no weight with a thin fringe to hold it in place. Mine always looked crap Sad.

I have a full fringe now like Reese Witherspoon's and it sits well. I give it a quick straighten in the morning of a blast with the BBH and it stays put. I love it. It covers up my forehead lines and is very flattering. Smile

Um, what's BBH?

Have you read any of the threads on the curly girl method? You never use shampoo again, wash with conditioner and use only products without cones. It's meant to be great for thick/wavy/curly hair and gets rid of frizz. Maybe once you do that a fringe would be easier to manage. I'm going to start it next week after i find some right cleansing shampoo to wash all the nasties out! Check on their website curly girl UK. (sorry can't link)

BBH = Babyliss Big Hair
My cowlick means any fringe attempt looks weird unless it's a bit longer and swept to the side.

vanillamum · 20/02/2011 08:39

I also want a fringe, when I asked the hairdreser looked very dubious and said "Well, you have to train a fringe you know" Made me feel like I would have a disobedient dog of a fringe which made me want to get one all them more.
