Home hair dying

Is it easy? Can one do it alone (even after never doing it)?

What are the new mousse ones like? Really need to save some money and the hairdressers seems a reasonable place to start

I have just used the john frieda mousse one and its very easy (and clean) to use.
Don't know how long the colour lasts as literally just did it yesterday.

I've always done my hair by myself - depends on how long your hair is and how confident you are at doing it.

I've been doing mine myself for about 15 years and never mucked it up.

dementedma · 19/02/2011 18:03

mine is short so always do it myself. it's not hard, but can be messy. Mine grows fast so needs redone every 4 weeks about.
Good tip is to rub vaseline or baby oil onto hairline, ears and neck as it stops staining of the skin.

The mousse ones do look very easy on the adverts....my hair is shoulder length....or will be once it has had the mn chop....

I just used the John Frieda mousse this morning. Was very easy to use (as long as you read the instructions carefully on how to mix it up)but I will second what other poster's have said about the shades being darker than stated on the box. Looks good though

I heard i really good tip (could have been grazia), apparently old hair is more porous so damp the ends with cold water stops it absorbing so much dye. Nothing worse than lighter roots than ends.

Also i always use semi, you have to dye hair every 6 weeksish any way because of root growth so may as well and limit the damage.

BronwenC · 19/02/2011 21:01

if you have never done it yourself you may want someone to be there to tell you if you have missed a bit. its a pain when its all washed and dry and theres a chunk at the back that didnt get any dye..

minko · 19/02/2011 21:05

I always do my own these days. The dye is more translucent than salon colour though and doesn't really cover the grey that well. It looks OK, but needs re-doing about every 4 weeks.

I use Nutrisse and find it pretty good. Have tried Perfect 10 but it stank like a chemistry experiment and the results weren't that great...

Gillybobs · 20/02/2011 11:26

Ive been dyeing at home, on and off, for 10 years. Here is what I know to be true...

Nice N Easy (original, not foam ) is by far the best for range of colours and more importantly staying power. Doesnt fade and covers grey really well. Many others dont.

The colours always come out darker than you think so err on the side of caution when choosing.

The reddish or golden shades always look quite fake

The new foam products and the "10 minute" products do not perform as well and dont give as good lasting grey coverage (btw I dont even have a lot of grey to cover)

Hope that helps

brimfull · 20/02/2011 11:40

also pay attention to the numbers
this is where i've gone wrong before and the colour has come out way too dark
the higher the number the lighter the colour
my hairdresser recommended me to get a 6-7 colour ,any lower and my hair would be too dark
all depends on what colour you start with

remember to check on the back of the box where it shows the result from your starting point

and I have hardly any grey but I did want what was there covered up , the semi-permanent didn't cover it at all

SlightlyMadSpook · 20/02/2011 11:54

Are the numbers the same as used by hairdressers? I think I have a 5-6 at hairdressers. Should I be aiming for the same?

think so slightlymad .

OP the john frieda mousse is great, non messy and lovely shiny colour. i do mine in dark red brown and it lasts about 2 months before it starts to fade again.
