Party at mates house outfit?

I am clueless! What should you wear to a wedding anniversary party at someone's house? Is a little black dress and heels too much, should it be more jeans, nice top and heels or is that too casual?

Any help appreciated....

I have similar next month.

Am wearing black skinny jeans and a black one shoulder arse length dressy top. Still deciding between leopard print or plain killer heels.

Ask the hostess?

I would go with jeans or trousers if there is any risk of them being the sort of loon who makes everyone take their shoes off and ruining your carefully chosen outfit.
