Would you wear an item of maternity clothing if you weren't pregnant?

I'm curious as to whether anyone would wear maternity wear if not pregnant.

I've seen a beautiful dress and tried it on - fits perfectly.
In the back of my mind though, I'm thinking everyone would recognise it and start asking questions.

Yes I have, but it's always been my old maternity stuff. I have never bought maternity if I'm not pregnant. If it fits perfectly do it, but get someone to have a critical look at the length on you - maternity is usually designed longer at the front so that when it covers the bump it looks the same length all the way round.

paddypoopants · 17/02/2011 13:16

Of course you should buy it - if it looks nice then why not? I am wearing a maternity cardigan I bought recently because it was nice and long. My sister was admiring it and even when I told her it was maternity she went and bought one as well. Neither of us are pregnant we just wanted a decent cardi.

iwilldothis · 17/02/2011 14:40

maybe it depends on the item, some things are more maternity-ish than others.... have you got a link?
If you feel 100% comfortable in it and it doesn't make you feel pregnant (not a nice feeling when you aren't!) then just go for it! But consider how you would feel if someone that you know who IS pregnant also buys it?

Not sure. I saw a gorgeous tea dress last time I was in Mothercare but not sure I could bring myself to try it on, let alone wear it

moragbellingham · 17/02/2011 16:06

M&P It looks so much better in RL - vibrant blues, purples and reds and an 8 fits like a normal tea dress.

Tbh I think maternity jeans are much more comfortable than ordinary ones. Not the over bump ones the other ones.
If it fits go for it.
Nice cardie morag :) I want it!

pipplin · 17/02/2011 16:14

Cardie! I mean dress! Oh dear, I think it's tea and cake time :)

HettyAmaretti · 17/02/2011 16:18

Lay it flat, if it's not longer at teh front then buy it.

tulpe · 17/02/2011 16:23

Agree with Hettie - make sure the front isn't longer than the back.

I wear a Top Shop maternity tee - I didn't realise it was maternity when first tried it on (it was on a sale rail) but just fell in love with the colour and fabric. I haven't been pregnant for 7 years and probably won't be ever again :)

iwilldothis · 17/02/2011 16:50

love that dress, in fact, I'm eyeing it up at the moment too.....but I am pregnant!! :)

BlameItOnTheBogey · 17/02/2011 16:53

I wear my Isabella Oliver wrap all the time. It's easily identifiable as IO maternity wear and I don't care because it is lovely.

fridakahlo · 17/02/2011 16:53

Yes, I would and have done! I find that maternity clothes suit my postnatal body without making me look pregnant, which ironically a lot of normally tailored clothes do!

ethelina · 17/02/2011 16:55

I borrowed most of my maternity clothes and bought and resold on eBay the rest. The only thing I still find useful is bump-bands. Perfect for hiding post-dinner stomach or lengthening a shortish top.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 17/02/2011 17:00

I do. Bought a pair of black maternity trousers in Next. They're wide leg with a foldover top (which holds my tummy in!) and are the most comfortable pair of trousers I have ever owned. I have 4 pairs and wear them to work.

CointreauVersial · 17/02/2011 17:01

I bought a lovely top from John Lewis once, and wore it several times before realising it was actually a maternity brand!

I never actually wore it while pg.

biryani · 17/02/2011 18:42

I love Jojo maternity spaghetti strap tops-mainly because a 10 fits me and supports my (sagging) bosom. Nice and long too.

Marne · 17/02/2011 20:11

I say some underwear in the 'fig leafs' calalouge today which i realy liked and then read 'maternity wer', i'm still tempted to buy it (even though i have no use for a nursing bra).

laosvher · 17/02/2011 20:13

Yes, don't see why not.

laosvher · 17/02/2011 20:13

Actually, if I have a big mean (read: daily dinner) my stomach expands and makes me look about 4 months pregnant.
So some maternity pants would come in handy :o

Jcee · 17/02/2011 20:18

I'm still wearing a H&M maternity strappy vest top as it's long and very comfy and supportive...

I was in H&M recently and saw them on display and actually stood by the rack for 5 minutes toying with buying another...I'm not pregnant Blush

Beveridge · 17/02/2011 20:18

I bought a dress from Mothercare a few months after DD was born, it was black and 60s style and it was in the sale - total bargain!

Partly I bought it because it hid a multitude of post natal sins but I've had loads of compliments about it. I have told a few people it was maternity but they said they would never have known.

omaoma · 17/02/2011 20:21

do it almost every day - fab pair of maternity skinny jeans from gap which are really comfy and much better under long-line tops because there are no buttons to stick out!

moragbellingham · 20/02/2011 21:19

I fitted into a size 6 for the first time everGrin!!

To all of you whose tums expand after a large meal, there's a name for that -- DD2 and her 15 yo friends call it a food baby.
