Outerwear for school runs for this in between weather

Hi,

Wondering if you can help. I need to buy myself a coat/outerwear of some type that is waterproof, warmish (for this in between weather), with a hood (to keep hands free to hold all the bags), does not make me look frumpy and is stylish. I cant see anything in the shops apart from thin parkas or thick padded coats. I also dont want to spend too much more than £50. Does such a thing exist?

I bought something exactly as you describe and found my friend had bought identical! I'll see if I can find a link.

I'd just give in and buy one of those waterproof outdoor coats/jackets the ones with the removable fleece. I get alot of wear out of mine and usually treat myself to a new one each year for about £50. Next winter i hope to have lost all of my baby weight and will be buying a northface one. Have you tried millets or outdoor type shops? I think its a very practical mummy coat for all that waiting around parks and playgrounds and school gates, i suppose it depends on where you live but i'm not out of place at my sons school, you could say we are out in the sticks though.

It was from M&S but can't see it on their website. Its waterproof with a hood. Knee length. Good roomy pockets. And stylish yet practical. In black.

Would you consider a non-hooded coat with a hat?

Hoods blow down - irritating.

That way you can choose a coat you like in a shape that suits you and then a hat in the same colour or fabric.

bornorg · 15/02/2011 14:32

No i have a padded coat without a hood and hve found that i really need a hood, as much as I dont like them. and hats realy dont suit me. practical is good but i also want a bit of style as I tend to let this go a lot for comfort..

I have seen a friend of mine wear something similar but in a steel grey colour. it looks different and seems to do the job. what do you think? although this is not available in my size and not sure whether colour would suit me.

this in brown or grey.
Warm and waterproof(ish) - has been my best buy of the year!

moragbellingham · 15/02/2011 14:42

Your budget has increased substantially!

What about a half price Merrell Wakefield?

bornorg · 15/02/2011 14:46

well I was hoping somebody will show me the same thing within my budget

the lands end jackts look interesting. i like the grey and the brown. wondering if not too short.

how much is a half price merrell?

i am a size 12 - according to size guide it is saying S would be right but I tend to go for M most other places. Do the sizes normally come up small or large in Lands End

posey will try and check it out in M&S. Had trawled website and had not seen anything there either.

here

I don't wear mine with the funnel neck, it sits perfectly nicely unzipped and folded down like a regular collar.
Not warm enough for winter but definitely good for spring/autumn, and really really light to wear.

moragbellingham · 15/02/2011 18:22

I'm a 12 and wear a S as it's an American (generous) based company. Can fit something like a thin fleece underneath too.
They hit just above mid-thigh on me but I'm fairly short.
They do have a parka at £69 that's a bit longer but not so much of a bargain.

MrsPennySworth · 16/02/2011 08:02

I bought a jacket from per una,m and s. About £60, mink type colour but it's like a stylish rain coat. You can't miss it if you look at their jackets-couple of people commented it's nice too.

Oumasrusks · 16/02/2011 08:39

I have the same one from M&S as Posey and it's fantastic. I bought it towards the end of last year and I've worn it loads.

Uniqlo military parka is warm enough, water repellent and under £40, shop.uniqlo.com/uk/goods/067058
