Salon colour or do it yourself?

For the last couple of years I have been having highlights at the salon, and more recently highlights and a semi on the rest. However, my roots are becoming increasingly grey, so wondering if at this point most people start dying their hair at home, as it is cheaper and can be done more frequently? So what do you do?

Highlights can be dodgy and a bit funny if I do them myself, so hairdressers for those.
Otherwise I do it myself.

It's just a case of finding a shade of dye that you like, I think

I've done the opposite. I stopped dyiing my own hair when my roots became increasingly grey. I would never go back to that now because the grey roots were becoming very obvious and unsightly and the rest of my hair was a harsh dark brown. I now have a half head of highlights and my roots done at the salon and this disguises my grey roots for far longer. Very expensive though and when I'm much older I'll probably go gracefully white.

i was just about to start a thread like this. i have brown hair, some white especially one cluster at the front. i've always dyed it at home, brown. now the roots are getting more obvious, more quickly, im wondering whether to start dying it with a light brown dye that would effectively turn the greys into highlights, and enable me to grow light brown gracefully? I'm too vain to go grey just yet... is that going to work, do you think? and if i do a permanent dye, will it lighten all my hair? I don't want that to happen.

Like crystalglasses I used to dye my hair at home, but as more and more grey started showing and I have a light coloured carpet in the bathroom it became obvious that I couldn't do anything like as a good a job as a professional hairdresser. I also have very short hair that looks a complete mess if it isn't cut regularly, so I go to the hairdresser every 5 - 6 weeks.

my hair is naturally dark brown but I have an increasing number of greys. I have caramel and blonde highlights put through it at the hairdressers every 6 weeks. The lighter highlights help to disguise the greys as they start to come back through.

DIY - always have. Never had a disaster (yet) Grin

I do it at home now as greys have appeared and the touching up needs to be more frequent.
I used to do it at the salon, but I cant stand the chat/time/sitting around/being fitted in etc.

I was expecting a few disasters but none happened- it's cheap' looks as good and it's quick.
Having said that I do one allover colour, and if i wanted anything more than that I would go to salon.

Thanks everyone. Food for thought!
