Hair dye question - red on blonde

HighPriestessBoo · 14/02/2011 13:08

I can't afford the upkeep on my highlighted brown / blonde hair anymore so I've decided to go back to dying it red at home as I used to 7 years or so ago. I've got about 2 inches of dark roots and the tips are very blonde at the end - the hair underneath is maninly brown now.

I've bought a lovely John Frieda hair colour in a medium red brown which I won't be able to do a strand test with as once it's mixed it has to be used straight away. I'm a little worried about the blonder bits of my hair going orange rather than red - can anyone advise me before I take the plunge and regret it?

I bought a red to go over my highlighted blonde a while ago. When I bottled it & went back to my hairdresser she warned that my hair would probably have gone more pinky than anything else. Just a thought

Have no idea what you'd do to avoid that though, sorry Smile

Will go pink, mine did Shock.
It would probably be best if you had some layers put in to cut out the blonde bits.

Grown out highlights are all the rage, id pay good money for them!

LisMcA · 14/02/2011 15:52

Be careful, I ended up looking like a pillarbox going from blonde to red. Quickly fixed though by using another more browny red a few days later. You will probably see the difference between your roots and the blonde ends though. After a few applications it should even out.

Good luck!

Oh I didn't realise I was fashionable bristolcities :o

I don't mind it looking bright, but Pink is what I'm scared of jenroy.

Still undecided. Hmm.

Did it go pink or not?

HighPriestessBoo · 15/02/2011 20:12

No - it's bright red. Which is what I wanted. Really pleased :)

See, now you've got me wondering whether to take the plunge again! Would save me a fortune on the upkeep of my highlights & not need doing so often

HighPriestessBoo · 15/02/2011 20:20

Hee hee! Well my hair is light brown but has quite a bit of red in it anyway. I hadn't had my roots done since August and my hair grows quite fast so there was a fair bit of roots.

I have to recommend the John Frieda hair dye - it was so easy to use. This was the colour I used.

Mine's naturally a very dark mousy colour with a bit of red, not nearly as much as my mam who had hair like Faye (think that's her name) from Emmerdale.

I'll continue lurking on MN & wondering & getting a bit lot frustrated at myself while I try and decide

Thanks for the link, I've not seen them before

HighPriestessBoo · 15/02/2011 20:32

No they're new. I'll def be using again. It's 2 quid off in Boots at the mo!

Go arn..... :o

Don't . . . I'm always dithering about it from a couple of weeks before my next appointment

BibiThree · 15/02/2011 20:36

IT WILL GO PINK. I did it myself and had it done at the hairdressers. Pink. Pink. Pink. Awful. Still having trouble covering it now with browns.

HighPriestessBoo · 15/02/2011 20:41

Bibi Mine's red. But like I said I have 6 months regrowth so that's probably why it went ok. It's not pink, I promise!

I did mine a few weeks ago.(over blonde highlights) Took a while to get used to but love it now. Not pink at all, but very bright.
