everyday a bad hair day

since I had my hair cut a few weeks ago every day I get stressed and upset as my hair looks so crap.
I used to have quite long curly hair and have had it cut into a shorter bob and all the layers cut shorter and thinned out. I can't do anything with it to make it look nice - it's too short to put up and the layers don't do anything - just make it look lank.
I've tried loads of different products and different ways of drying it, sometimes I just leave it to dry naturally, but it always looks awful.
Should I go back to the hairdressers and ask for some advice. Bar cutting it even shorter or into a crop which I used to have and dh hated, I can't see any solution.
I feel fed up and not v. confident about the way I look as my hair is letting me down.
Anyone got any suggestions?
I did have it coloured 2 weeks ago, to see if that might help - I am pleased with the colour but the cut is still crap!

Have you tried straightening it? I've got very wavy, thick hair, which is layered and about shoulder length. For some reason it always looks much better after I've straightened it

Mum2girls · 13/10/2005 16:43

go back to the hairdresser who cut it and tell her your problem and that you need advice about styling it. Did you like it when you left the hairdressers?

bagpussmice · 13/10/2005 17:24

no, didn't really like it, but I never like the way other people blow dry my hair - thought it would be okay when I got home and it "settled"...

Paologirl - how long does it take you to straighten? I don't have much time in the mornings? Or do you just do it once after washing and then it's straight for how many days?
Does it not go dry? My hair goes dry and frizzy when blowdried.

just bought some straighteners from ebay -
do you dry hair first then straighten or do it on wet hair?
I am a newbie to these contraptions!

Aaargh - don't do it when wet - it will fry your hair! Unless of course you have those wet to straight ones, but I don't think hairdressers recommend them. Use iron oil or similar to protect your hair as well or it will end up as a dry frizzy bush before long. Did you get the GHDs? They really are worth it.

Frayedknot · 13/10/2005 21:11

Dry your hair, preferably using drier & one of those big brushes, as it will give more volume to your hair. Point hairdryer down the hair to keep it smoother.

Put most of your hair up using clips or slides. Take down one section at a time and run straighteners over it, quite slowly, but as evenly as you can.

You can put on some serum or similar but I don;t bother as it doesn;t seem to make any difference.

It will make your hair drier but if the straighteners are decent ones it shouldn;t be too bad.

I do mine in the evening and then can leave for a couple of days before it needs washing again, although I only bother for special occasions tbh.

bagpussmice · 13/10/2005 21:14

bought some ghd lookalike ones - only 25.00 - thought I would see how I get on before splashing out totally!
My hair is quite dry anyway, so don't really want it any drier!
Franny and Frayed - do you both have curly hair to start with??

umm, i don't blow dry my hair before straightening, i wash it the night before and leave it to dry naturally and then straighten it in the morning, my hair is quite thick, a good five inches below my shoulders, in layers around the front and through teh back to break up the bulk and it takes about 15 minutes to straighten it now. it used to take about 25-30 min but now so used to sectioning it and then doing eachsection that it gets much quicker.

can then still put it up for work, or have it down but without the tears and tantrums that frizzy hair used to cause (yes i am 29 and not 3!!!)

vickiyumyum · 13/10/2005 21:16

oh yes make sure you use hair oil, i don't use the ghd one as find it leaves my hair lank, i like the lee stafford one from boots(in abright pink bottle)

bagpussmice · 13/10/2005 21:19

25-30 mins! have never spent that long doing my hair - even when a teenager
will have to get up at about 5am to have time to do it before taking kids to school/nursery etc!
If you do the night before does it stay straight?

OP posts:
paolosgirl · 14/10/2005 10:02

I blow dry my hair roughly, stick a bit of serum through it, and give it a quick going over with the straighteners (5-10 mins max). There's some fab stuff called finishing creme from the Frizz Ease range that you can put on (only need a tiny bit) after you've straightened if you can be bothered.

bagpussmice · 15/10/2005 13:52

got my straighteners today and had a go! Hair looks good - a bit dry - on the look out for a product to "sleek" it up a bit...
