Boys and weddings

Ok my girls are sorted with what to wear. What do my boys aged 12 & 10 wear? Wedding of a friend is in a couple of weeks. I don't want to buy clothes that won't be worn again.

Can I send them in jeans and a shirt? Not tthat they have jeans or shirts, apart from school ones! We don't usually do smart. We do comfort.

I got some stone coloured cargo trousers from Gap for my boys to wear at a wedding last year - looked smart with a shirt & now they wear them for tearing up the house as normal. Not jeans though - imo.

pigsinmud · 08/02/2011 16:35

They don't acyually have jeans as they find them uncomfortable, but dh suggested that as an idea. I'll have a look at Gap.

I've been wondering the very same thing!
My almost 7 year old lives in trackie bottoms, but has nice dark jeans (and nothing else apart from school wear!).

It's my brothers wedding, so might just ask SIL to be what she thinks about dark jeans. It't not like anyone would notice so long as his top half looks nice. Thinking shirt and jumper or tank top.

What are your girls going to wear? Mine are 1 and almost 4 - they don't wear dressy dresses either (again trackies most of the time - navy ones handed down from DS!).
Was contemplating dresses, but also wondered if tunic/leggings would be ok? Might be more re-wearable. Although looking at Next and Monsoon dresses on ebay as I could always sell them on again.

I think some smart casual chino/cargo type trousers with nice shirts is fine - jeans too casual, even for kids. Maybe plain or stripey V-neck sweaters as well as it's unlikely to be very warm.

CeliaFate · 08/02/2011 19:31

Something like this which they could wear again. It's comfortable and smart and the trousers could always be worn for school. I would say jeans are a no-no for a wedding.

pigsinmud · 08/02/2011 20:08

Thanks for the ideas.

NAH - my girls are 4 & 7. They each have a Boden dress from a couple of years ago. One is navy and the other purple. Short sleeved and very simple. They wear them to parties. Don't know what they are going to wear on their feet! School shoes probably, that or wellies!

Going to have severe objections from 12 year old. He lives in trackies and t shirts. 10 year old will protest less!

Can you get DH or some man to take them to get shirts/trousers (if he'll direct them to right stuff Grin).

Maybe they won't feel they're dressed by you into something they don't like. He'll tell them that no bloke will be wearing jeans - they'll all be dressing up - complete with the lynx and the hair gel if necessary!

planestrainsautomobiles · 08/02/2011 22:28

How about some cool combats look here with a nice shirt

SickOnMyShoulder · 09/02/2011 07:04

We use dark blue or grey cords for winter smart occasions like www.johnlewis.com/135582/Style.aspx with a nice shirt from gap or john lewis.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 09/02/2011 07:18

Why would you dress your girls appropriately and not your boys? I'm astounded at the number of boys who turn up to weddings in jeans, it looks awful. Surely your boys have to learn that there are some occasions that require a bit more effort. Would you let your daughters go in jeans?

pigsinmud · 09/02/2011 07:44

Well Gwendoline tbh I don't want to spend a fotune on clothes that won't be worn again. The girls already have dresses. They refuse to wear trousers and don't have jeans. I had been considering sticking the boys in their black school trousers and getting a shirt.

I'd rather they wore jeans than some of those hideous mini adult suit things that appear.

We took DS (7) to a wedding earlier this year, I hated the suits that were around. I hate dressing little boys up in mini adult suits.

So we went for some trendy skinny dark blue jeans, a long white sleeved t-shirt and a black waist coat.

We also bought him some bright green converse boots.

He looked fab.

Gillybobs · 09/02/2011 10:30

I'd buy smart cargo/chino type trousers (Boden or Gap) to wear with a nice checked shirt, if you think they definitely wont wear the trousers again why not chop them into shorts for the summer?

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 09/02/2011 12:13

DS has some of these which look a fair bit nicer in RL than they do on the website.

naffedoff · 09/02/2011 17:48

DS was about 8 at the last wedding we went to. He wore smart chino/cargo trousers and a striped shirt/tank top combo, from Next. Last year, we had a christening and DS, then 10, wore similar trousers in a darkish brown from Next (via Ebay) and a shirt/waistcoat combo in grey from M&S Autograph sale.
My tip would be to try Ebay. Boys' smart stuff has usually been worn once or twice for a special occasion and is generally cheap to buy as there seems to be less demand.

jaffacakeaddict · 09/02/2011 18:09

If their scool trousers are black rather than navy or grey I'd just buy nice shirts for them to wear with them.

employmentlawquery · 09/02/2011 18:18

My husband hates smart suit trousers and loves jeans. He will wear non-blue jeans though and has some tan coloured ones that look very presentable. With a well tailored jacket, he looks fine for weddings and Christenings. (He does have some nice suits but feels very uncomfortabl in them)
