What should I use on dry scaly knees?

My knees are reptilian, I have got horrible dry scaly hard skin on my knees from endless kneeling down to change nappies. It's been nearly 4 years and I fear my knees will never be the same. Basically I want to get my legs out this summer, what can I use to soften the skin and hopefully get rid of the brownish tinge?

Thanks!

Waitrose bottom butter.

woopsidaisy · 08/02/2011 14:12

Yes,Waitrose Butter is lovely.
I have horribly dry hands due to tabs I have to take. they are so painful in Winter. Have started using Body Shop Hemp handcream, and it is AMAZING! Use a file to get rid of some of the dead/dry skin, then rub in the cream. I think they do a body version of the cream.

Definitely need to exfoliate - if you can have a bath, and then near the end, exfoliate (or if you go swimming with your DC). Then moisturise. But you need to get rid of the old dead skin, no use just moisturising it, I don't think.

Could it be psoriasis? If so, see your doc & get some Dovonex cream (prescription only)

My knees have been exactly the same, started using Dove Pro-Age body lotion (for normal skin) about a week ago and knees much improved. Dry, scaly top layer has gone, they're still a bit red but much better. I'm surprised because the really intensive moisturisers I've tried haven't done anything - might be down to the AHAs in the Dove lotion.

emulsifying ointment, i get it on prescription its like really thick vaseline.im sure you can probably buy it cheaply at a pharmacy. it worked wonders on my dry heels and knees

Exfoliate first - if you don't have any use some granulated sugar mixed with a bit of shower gel/handwash. Then slather on some flexitol heel balm - and a thick layer when you go to bed. Wrap a bit of clingfilm round it to keep it there.

I recommend a foot cream twice a week because it will have urea in it and it is this that helps to break down the hardened skin. CCS is brilliant and not too expensive and recommended by my pedi-lady. CCS. Once hard skin is gone then use a normal moisturiser.

I had this too, as well as super-dry hands; it does get better once your DC are out of nappies Smile

Why on earth are you kneeling down to change nappies? I never did this - I just changed DD on the bed.

Ooopsadaisy · 08/02/2011 20:38

I asked for some exfoliating advice on here some time ago and was told:

Heat a small amount of olive oil in the microwave.

Take a small amount of sugar and mix with warmed oil.

Rub into skin.

Wash off.

Dead skin - washed away.

Oil nourishes thirsty skin.

It is a miracle!

Got any left-over Lansinoh? That is very good. Slather it on.

Thanks for all the tips - really useful. I think I'll try them all :)

I change nappies on the floor because it saves walking upstairs each time I change DS. Also, he's a wriggling toddler and at least on the floor he can't fall off!
