Moving on from the changing bag - casual everyday bag

howmuchyousay · 07/02/2011 22:44

Have finally decided that I don't need to hawk my changing bag with DS everywhere. Just need to take a nappy and some wipes.

maybe some snacks and toys.

What bag shall I get which looks grown up yet casual enough for school run/trip to town, and big enough to fit everything.

It feels like years since I've even looked at handbags.

Sad

Well my advice is whilst they are in nappies, actually until they start school you need to carry around that much stuff that you still need a changing bag and the day you don't have a packet of wipes, spare clothes, a snack, toy and suncream is the day you'll never forget in my experience.

preghead · 07/02/2011 22:54

yes don't EVER think you can get away with not taking the spare nappy/pants/trousers that you haven't used for months because that is the day they will do projectile puke/wee/poo/fall in dog shit/sit in a stream/jump in a puddle/shake hands with a tramp etc. Trust me. Multiplied by 10 for every kid you have.

Equally, the week you stop carrying calpol and piriton is the day they will get stung by a bee and get anaphylactic shock. Again, trust me.

I know where you are coming from though, you do get sick of the sight of the changing bag - I normally decant most of it into the car and then carry a normal handbag and a small bag that hangs off the buggy.

howmuchyousay · 07/02/2011 23:11

In that case, what do you think to this

although I hate portable change mats

DS2 is 2, so I suppose pretty soon I'll be back to potty training, 8 pairs of pants territory

I have a 2 year old and I rarely take out a change of clothes and the kitchen sink. Change mat in car with a spare nappy, moves to pram if we're out.

I have normal lovely bags.. :)

howmuchyousay · 08/02/2011 07:37

Madamcholet, where do you get yours from?

I have one similar to this same brand, different style. It is huge, and the leather is so soft.

ethelina · 08/02/2011 07:53

I gave up a changing bag at about 4 weeks 3 months, at the moment I'm using a smallish Mandatina Duck rucksack I got on holiday. I also have a lovely soft leather medium sized Fenn Wright Manson bag from TKMaxx. They have a huge selection of bags in my nearest one.

I do like the Orla Kiely one. Go for that if you love it.

ethelina · 08/02/2011 07:55

Llaregub's one is nice too.

madammecholet · 08/02/2011 07:58

usually Peony & Moore. I have a lovely large hobo which fits everything in it and looks incredibly stylish. I had a purple leather one before that..

Just wanted to add that I rarely take out a changing bag, never have really. But I do have this one for those rare moments. I've never been one for carting round the kitchen sink though.

essexgirl31 · 08/02/2011 08:12

Love the Orla Kiely bag. I have a similar sized one though it isn't a baby bag. (I am slightly addicted to Orla Kiely)

It fits everything in it - couple of nappies, wipes, spare pants, suncream in summer etc and my purse, make up bag and phone. I can wipe it clean which I seem to do a lot!

monkeysmama · 08/02/2011 08:22

This from Jigsaw is pricey but looks so lovely & would just get better with use.

I use a handbag for myself and have two bright toiletries bags for dd's stuff. One has snacks & the other change of knickers etc for emergencies. They fit into the bottom of the pram or into my handbag if necessary and because they're bright they're easily locatable in a rush.

As soon as dd was big enough I got her a little rucksack to put some little toys in to take out.

hifi · 08/02/2011 08:43

stokke do lovely ones

trianera · 08/02/2011 09:01

Aaagh - I have just ordered an Orla Kiely one. I'm blaming you entirely howmuchyousay!

mamatomany · 08/02/2011 10:24

Is the stokke one nice ? i've resisted so far bu that might tempt me to go all matchy matchy with the pram hmmm

carefulwiththataxe · 08/02/2011 10:29

God - that Orla Kiely one is lovely....unfortunately my son is 18 so I don't think I can really justify it! Wonder if you could use it as an ordinary bag - OBVIOUSLY without the changing mat...

bagpuss · 08/02/2011 10:41

There are plenty of Orla Kiely bags without the baby bit in! In fact, I'm going to look at that sale now Wink.

I've always used a little portable mat which can hold nappies, wipes and other baby bits once mine have got to 18 months. I put anything else in a large handbag rather than cart a changing bag with me. Last time I used a Radley cross body bag.

howmuchyousay · 08/02/2011 12:04

Hmm, the baby bag has the good zip compartment at the bottom which I could keep spare nappies in, but I would probably ditch the mat.

But then the sling bag is also nice

decisions decisions
