What labels are cool (and cheap) and NOT A&F, Hollister, Jack Wills for teenagers?

There must be some cooler, more ahead of the curve/indie labels?

For 14 yr old ds - desperate to stop him looking like a smug thick richy kid...

sharbie · 07/02/2011 22:30

h&m

sharbie · 07/02/2011 22:31

french connection??

Hullygully · 07/02/2011 22:32

Will have a look - are they cool tho?

Changeisagoodthing · 07/02/2011 22:33

At 14 doesn't he have his own view?

Hullygully · 07/02/2011 22:33

Change - yes of course, he can't stand it that if he doesn't wear the crap expensive labels he gets comments, so I said I'd ask on MN.

sharbie · 07/02/2011 22:33

ds says so - he is 16 also he likes burtons (i don't think they are cool though Smile )

Changeisagoodthing · 07/02/2011 22:37

Mine wears Jack wills and some Indie t shirts bought from small stalls. Jeans still gap as not quite big enough for adult.

He did have to get a certain t shirt from burtons last year.

Superdry but not cheap.

Do you have something other than price against Jack wills? In tne summer sale tops were only. £14 and some £9.

Changeisagoodthing · 07/02/2011 22:38

Boden do a teenage range Johnny b

Hullygully · 07/02/2011 22:39

I hate what they represent. All the clothes are made by the same blind orphans in China, but stick a stupid moose on the front and you can put the price up by £80.

I have explained this to ds several million times so that he can't help but see it.

sharbie · 07/02/2011 22:43

tk maxx and officers club (v cheap) are also favourites

Changeisagoodthing · 07/02/2011 22:44

Hmmm

Mine wear Jack wills they wash very well and are much better fabric. They each had a hoodie and top from burtons last summer and after a couple of months they were only fit for the bin and faded. DD has jw hoodies that are 3 years old and still going strong.

If Jack wills is what is cool where you are I would bite the bullet and buy a couple of items. Fitting in is very important when you are a 14 year old boy.

tethersend · 07/02/2011 22:48

American Apparel
Urban Outfitters
Fred Perry
Topman
Lyle and Scott
Asos

Now run, Hully, run- go to my bag thread and tell me how wonderful the bag is! Please.

Thanks.

Love you.

Bye.

AnyFucker · 07/02/2011 22:49

SoulCal from Republic are cheapish and seem to go down ok with the teenagers

my dd and her boy mates wear it, when they can't afford Hollister

Tryharder · 07/02/2011 22:50

Fat Face?

Second hand Jack Wills off Ebay?

Or you could be a complete bitch and make him wear Asda or Tesco. Grin Or Primark...

OP, I don;t have teenagers and am 40 so completely out of it yoof culture wise but what on earth does a "smug thick richy kid" wear?
Confused

Changeisagoodthing · 07/02/2011 22:52

Fatface is more 20 plus here. Next to white stuff which is 30 plus.

pointylug · 07/02/2011 22:52

Your son must know though, no?

It depends very much on teh area you live in and the clothing aspirations of the parents too to some extent.

H&M is fine for my dd to wear. River Island is fine but pricey. Some GAP things are ok but in some places GAP is a complete no-no as it's said to stand for Gay and Proud Hmm.

There are different tribes where we live. There's your Jack Wills bunch, the New Look/H&M/River Island lot, the bench/hedley set.

lol @ boden

pointylug · 07/02/2011 22:53

No young 'uns round here would wear fat face in a million years.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 07/02/2011 22:53

Should he not be looking at vintage? Designer jeans and a vintage t shirt nobody else has got?

Thinking 70 80s originals here...if he goes for lables head to toe he will ALWAYS look like someone else.

Ebay is full of them if you search within the shops...but dont be fooled by "Vintage Retro" tags...must be vintage!

pointylug · 07/02/2011 22:54

ah, just seen that you don't have teens.

pointylug · 07/02/2011 22:54

Why would anyone be encouraging a 14 yr old lad to wear designer jeans?

sharbie · 07/02/2011 22:56

yh i agree with being original and wearing vintage - your ds can get some great t shirts from the u.s on ebay

bestmamaderwelt · 07/02/2011 22:59

Yes American Apparel are fantastic for cool basics. Brilliant hoodies etc.

Changeisagoodthing · 07/02/2011 23:00

gAP is not ok here. It is said by teenage boys to mean gay and proud. There is nothing that a teenage boys coping with puberty needs less than being teased about being gay.

Heard very funny comedian who said that the way end teenage knife crime was to engrave every knife made with GAY and then they wouldn't carry them.

Boden teenage boys are very very like Jack wills (some may say ripped off) but cheaper. No logo on them so neutral.

Changeisagoodthing · 07/02/2011 23:02

But you have to have the personality to be different. That often comes later. For most 14 year olds it is about fitting in and being part of the crowd. I think it's much harder for boys than girls at this age. They need to be part of a strong peer group.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 07/02/2011 23:02

Also, who does he think looks cool? Actors and singers etc?

It's good to have a starting point when forming your own style...ou can google their interviews re where they like to shop etc.
