Should I get a bob?

freerangeeggs · 04/02/2011 21:51

I'm thinking of getting my hair bobbed. I go through this phase periodically when I've been growing may hair for a while but never have the guts to see it though.

It's inspired by this 'do:

Emma's Imagination

My hair is very long at the moment, over halfway down my back, and it's always been very thick. I have a fringe at the moment which I like. I'm so busy with work these days that I rarely wear it down -it's always tied up in a sloppy ponytail.

Are bobs good on thick hair or am I going to end up looking like Shaun the Sheep?

All help appreciated :) Thanks!

oooh, have absolutely no idea - the link doesn't seem to work for me.
can you get a 'consultation' app with a hairdresser - no scissors involved Wink?

freerangeeggs · 04/02/2011 21:59

Hmm, the link doesn't work? I'm doing this on my new iPad so I might have buggered it up...

a consultation sounds like a sensible thing to do, MrsShrek - I'll do that! Thanks :)

If anyone else has any bobtastic experiences please let me know - and I'd love opinions on the cut too, if it works this time!

Yes, do it, do it do it, bobs are fab and very chic. Well, I think so!

applecrumbleandcream · 04/02/2011 22:14

I've got a bob and very very thick straight hair. I have it graduated (so it is slightly shorter at the back and hangs longer at the front) and I have it thinned out loads to stop it looking 'mumsy' and bulky. I have a side fringe atm as tried a full fringe but grew so fast couldn't maintain. The style works for me as it falls into shape and is quick and easy to dry/style.

thenightsky · 04/02/2011 22:18

yes yes... best thing i ever did... people tell me i look chic and french Grin

Go for it.

DuplicitousBitch · 04/02/2011 22:20

if your hair is thick you will need a good cut and lots of layers otherwise you end up with a triangle head.

imo htere is no point in having long hair if you just tie it up all the time

PuppyMonkey · 04/02/2011 22:21

My question will sound odd but have you got a big head or a small head? And have you got a round face or long? I've had a bob when I was younger and less full of face and it was the bees knees, I looked like a 60s model. I then had a bob in my early 40s and yikes, same hairstyle but my face is a lot rounder now and it looked awful, I much prefer a long layered thing now.

Bobs suit small head with petite features.

freerangeeggs · 04/02/2011 22:25

Ooh, I feel a bit excited now after you two saying that, sadie and thenightsky :) It is a bit different, isn't it?

Applecrumble, your hair sounds just like mine so I'm really glad to hear that you like it! Is your hair similar to the video I posted then?

DuplicitousBitch · 04/02/2011 22:27

i have a big ol' head and i look ok

freerangeeggs · 04/02/2011 22:29

Oops, xposted puppymonkey!

I'm not sure what size my head is - sometimes hats don't fit but I think that's because of my mad hair... I've been told I have a heart-shaped face. I have a chin, anyway :) I don't think it's round.

Thanks for the advice!

Yes, do it! I have had long hair my whole life, up until last September when I chopped it into a bob. It is addictive, actually Grin. I went for a shorter bob in December, and got it cut in at the back a few weeks ago. i am thinking of chopping it super short next time Smile. Never would ahve thought I'd have the guts, or that short hair would suit me so well! I agonised for about 2 years before cutting it off, btw. Best style move I have made in a long time.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 04/02/2011 22:37

No...my hair is very thick and I have been down the bob route...I look very very wrong with a bob due to the thick hair.

I look like this but angrier

OpenAmyrillis · 04/02/2011 22:41

Generally women with bobs are the 'bob' type. They have had bobs as long as anyone can remember, they are not the type to question if a bob is for them.

A bob is not for you bob questioner

applecrumbleandcream · 04/02/2011 22:56

Don't really know what the 'bob' type is? Bit generalistic there imo OpenHmm. Bobs come in many variations/styles/lengths and have been around since the 20's so are a timeless classic.

I prefer a 'style' tbh than my hair just hanging - have had long hair in the past (before dd) and only wore it in a pony tail so bit pointless and boring really.

My hair is not like the video. I can see she has got it in a graduated bob, but her hair is very bushy. Mine is more like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2006/celebdatabase/victoriabeckham/victoria_beckham1_300_400.jpg&imgrefurl=www.hairstyle-blog.com/hairstyle-trend-alert.html&usg=__HYwIxPDHx5iBBMFFW07eUgA4U58=&h=400&w=300&sz=116&hl=en&start=106&zoom=1&tbnid=Uo7IWPVUzJiiGM:&tbnh=124&tbnw=93&ei=HYJMTbacIZOLhQfcg-2zDg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dstraight%2Bgraduated%2Bbob%26start%3D100%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this

I was at a fundraising thing a few weeks ago and chatting to a load of women in the kitchen,

It suddenly struck me that not only were they all dressed in pretty much the same clothes, but they all had bobs too.

It was like a scary movie. I wanted to run.

MrsMeow · 05/02/2011 15:56

I went from almost waist length hair to a choppy bob a few years ago, purely to stop myself tying it back all the time!

I love my hair, it needs cutting at the minute but when it's done it's a kid of graduated bob so longer at the front, with lots of layers and a side fringe. I used to have a bright red 'slice' on the left side as well, but have dyed it recently so it's red all over.

I think it's quite versatile. I can either have it sleek and shiny by using a bit of serum, use wax to define the layers and make it look a bit more punky, have my fringe down or clipped back...plus it dries quickly - which is a definite plus when you think that when it was long it would take all day or night to dry - it's so thick!

Go for it, you won't regret it I'm sure :) Just make sure that you keep some length at the front, I find with me that that makes a difference between looking ok (when it's a bit longer) to looking like a right twat! (when it's too short)

Blacksand · 05/02/2011 16:05

I had blonde (dyed) hair - armpit length for years. I have recently decided it was in such bad condition i dyed it red and had a bob.

It has taken a good 5 years off me tbh. I have mine cut straight across with a fairly thick fringe. I am a convert.

Pandsbear · 05/02/2011 16:17

Wimple - I am thinking of taking that photo in next week to the hairdresser! Best laugh I've had all day thanks.

I have a high fringe/just below ear length sides bob BTW. Love it.But I have dark fine straight hair so not much use to the original OP.

mamatomany · 05/02/2011 16:28

Throughout my 20's I was Mrs Boring Bob, I've now grown it to bra strap length and never again would I go back to bobsvil, If you combine it with Boden clothes and highlights you'll look like a stepford wife.

pollyblue · 05/02/2011 19:29

There's so many different types of bob, best bet is to have a consultation with a hairdresser. They can be longish, very short, one length, layered, fringed, fringe-free.......I've got fine hair and a pinhead and have a very 20's style, one length short bob, with fringe and shaved-in bit at my neck.

freerangeeggs · 06/02/2011 02:13

Thanks so much everybody!

I'm going to book a consultation with my hairdresser tomorrow. It's great to hear that so many people with thick hair love their bobs.

mamatomany, will avoid that look :) Don't think I could afford to shop at Boden anyway!

Wimpole.....lol at your pusscat link. Actually, the feline looks quite stylish, methinks!

I'm a bit like you OP,but I have short hair and grow it a bit, with a bob in mind but then remember all the faffing around to make it sit properly. I used to have it cut at the home of bobs...."Vidal Sassoon" and loved it.....for about 3 months then just got sick of that midlength/can't tie it back/falling around my face thing all the time.

I have fine hair but loads of it..... very straight too so, perfect for a bob but lordy lordy, such hard work!
