this

I did not get an engagement ring Sad we were too poor!!

Anyway fast forward 9 soon to be 10 years and I am looking to get an eternity ring.

Has to be 2 tone gold as my wedding ring is.

What do you think of this? I can say I know very little about diamonds - but I am not convinced by the rrp

Anyway - I like this style but do you think it is;
a) nice
b) not a complete rip off for what it is?

Thanks - opinions welcome

I don't think this would actually look two tone, I think the setting is white gold, but it would just look like a yellow gold ring.

Do you live anywhere near either the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham or Hatton Garden? I think you could definitely get more for your money or the same thing for less and have a lot more choice.

ellangirl · 04/02/2011 13:23

I'd say go and try some on in a jewellers next to your wedding ring, you might find it does not have to be 2 tone to go well, and that opens up your options. Even jewellers have sales, independent ones might be more likely to gove you a good price. Generally with diamonds you get what you pay for though, quality can vary a lot.

Live in NI so not close to the places you mention.

Any website suggestions? £800 ish pounds is definitely at the top of my budget for this.

Personally, I don't like it, but I am very picky about jewellery and never wear any.

It does seem very expensive for 0.5 carat of diamond in small pieces.

Dylthan · 04/02/2011 13:32

I like watching the jewllery channel and drooling over there things. They are very reasonable priced and you can see what they look like on the presenter so it will give you a bit of an idea.

I've had a couple of necklaces from them and they've always been lovely.

They do have a website to and I'm sure they deliver to NI give me a sec and I'll have a google for their website.

MadreInglese · 04/02/2011 13:33

Firstly, are they non-conflict diamonds? It's not clear on that website.

I've been told by many people never to buy diamond jewellery from a big chain as they hugely overprice everything, you'd be much better going to a smaller independent jeweller.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 04/02/2011 13:40

I would go and find an independent jeweller. See what they have, and talk to them about tweaking a style to suit what you want. I had an eternity ring made to my specification, it is beautiful and we got a very good price.

The quality of the diamonds in that ring isn't brilliant, especially considering that the individual stones are so small. I think you could get more for your money if you look around for a good jeweller.

Dylthan · 04/02/2011 13:40

here

plusonemore · 04/02/2011 13:54

i found this one too

I think you could get away with a yellow gold one, as the diamonds have the 'white' look anyway- maybe a channel set one? i have a yellow gold wedding band, a white gold eternity and a yellow gold engagement! Enjoy your sparkles!

Pinkflipflop · 04/02/2011 14:00

Thanks for your opinions and web suggestions.

Plus - I really love that ring!!

wow. im loving that rox ring,, so nice

Pinkflipflop · 04/02/2011 14:26

Just another questions;

would you buy from this place as I quite like this ring too?

beaverbrooks

Would I need shockingly big fingers?

OP posts:
ihatethecold · 04/02/2011 14:31

phew, thats a pricey one compared to the other one you showed us!
i wouldnt know if it would look ok, you would have to go and try something similar on first to get an idea.

Pinkflipflop · 04/02/2011 14:40

I know it is much more expensive. Maybe we could go a bit more for a really nice one.

I'm still drawn to the 2 tone idea.

Looks like I may not be able to do my shopping from the comfort of my armchair - will have to get coat on and start traipsing round the shops Sad

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 04/02/2011 14:43

Don't buy anything from Beaverbrooks.

We paid a third of what they were charging for an identical ring that we had made at an independent jeweller. They are a rip-off.

Dylthan · 04/02/2011 15:03

Another avenue to maybe look at is antique shops.

I once got told that jewllery is like new cars which lose money as soon as they leave the dealerships forecourt. As soon as a ring has left the shop it's lost money. (although gold prices have shot through the roof since then so this might no longer be the case)

We got our wedding bands from an antique shop in York for a fraction of the cost that they were in the high street jewellers there also much better quality.

My sil has an engagement ring from an antique shop it is so beautiful and unique that it makes me quite Envy every time I see it.

BrainThrustMastery · 04/02/2011 15:03

Pinkflipflop have you tried Joseph Rea in Belfast?

MadreInglese · 04/02/2011 15:49

not to piss on your bonfire pinkflipflop as getting sparkly things is all very nice and lovely but please please make sure they're not conflict diamonds

much better to find out before you buy!

OhCobblers · 04/02/2011 16:55

sorry not had a chance to read the thread and not wanting to sound like i'm teaching you to suck eggs (!) BUT you won't buy before Valentine's Day will you??

i'm sure prices will come down later in the month.

KikiJane · 04/02/2011 17:01

My mum was told to wait until the last week of the month before going anywhere where the staff might be on commission and they have a little flexibility on the price. They're often willing to drop a bit to reach month-end sales targets.

3gorgeousboys · 04/02/2011 20:03

I know some about diamonds & that first ring is way overpriced. Agree Beaverbrooks is a bad choice. I buy my jewellery from independent little shops - they have less space so don't waste it on poor quality. You will be sure to find what you want just by asking - they often have many contacts so can source just what you're after. Please don't get caught up in the swishy websites - you've got to try them on...believe me, when you've found 'the one' you'll just know
