Cosmetic surgery went wrong. Anyone else experienced this?

I had a nose job three years ago, which was a waste of £5,000! I now have a bigger nose, which is increasingly leaning to one side, because the bones warped.

The surgeon offered to do it again for £2,000, which unfortunately I can't afford (have since had DD and given up work).

Has anyone else experienced poor cosmetic surgery? Did you undergo the procedure again?

I'm really sorry to hear that Rainydaze.

My nose job didn't go wrong exactly, it just didn't fix all of the problems I have with it. Luckily though, I had mine done on the NHS 3 years ago because I'd never be able afford £5,000 privately. I got re-referred to one of the leading rhinologists in this country, and I'm having my revision done in a few months, and I'm pretty confident I'll get the result I want.

StarlightPrincess, it's great that you're having it done again. Fingers crossed that you'll have the nose of your dreams soon! :)

I had it done with a surgeon in Bristol at a BUPA hospital. He seems very good and confident, but I'm wondering if I should save up (over many years!) and then go with a different surgeon.

Thank you, I hope so too! I think that if you're unhappy with it, you should go for it, I know I would, even if I had to save up. Is there no chance at all of you getting anything done on the NHS?

FellatioNelson · 02/02/2011 21:40

Surely you have photographic evidence to show that it is bigger and increasingly wonky? Why on earth is he charging you to do it again? Confused Could you threaten to go to the small claims court?

Rainydaze · 02/02/2011 21:47

The surgeon agrees that it's gone wrong. The £2,000 is to cover the cost of the Anaesthetist and some hospital costs. He's in effect doing his bit free of charge. I think that it's the best offer I'm going to get.

I emailed him to tell him that I wake up at night because if I'm lying on my left-hand side, the right-hand nostril closes, so I gasp. Hopefully he'll read it soon.

I think it's just bad luck. He said that this happens in a small percentage of ops.

Well if he's done his job poorly then he should stump up the other costs to put it right.

Rainydaze · 02/02/2011 21:56

I know. When he told me on the phone he'd re-do it for nothing, that's what I thought, but then he told me I'd have to pay for everything else. It's a bloody shame!

That's the price of vanity, I suppose!

Hmm Doesn't sound right to me. I'd ask Citizen's Advice or contact whatever is the professional body for cosmetic surgeons for further advice if I were you. I think he's trying it on.

I had my nose done 8 yrs ago. Had a revision as there were irregularities on the bone but it didn't alter the shape. I paid for mine, was told you couldn't have it done on the NHS. My surgeon did the revision for nothing.

How did you get it done on the NHS Starlight? TBH I've never been happy with mine but I guess he did what I asked. It looks better than originally but on relection I could have asked for more shaved off. IYSWIM

StarlightPrincess · 03/02/2011 09:33

I had a septorhinoplasty, so it wasn't just the cosmetic element that was being sorted, it was the fact that my septum was deviated and that I couldn't breathe on one side was the main reason that I was eligible.

The cosmetic procedure was done at the same time because if they had just operated on the septum, it wouldn't have corrected the problem properly IYSWIM. They had to re-shape my nasal bones as well to get the optimum result.

This revision I'm having done though is purely cosmetic. I have a depression in my nasal cavity on the left side which results in my nose looking twisted, and it was not improved in my first surgery, even though I made it quite clear to the orginal surgeon that this was a big problem for me.

Remotew · 03/02/2011 09:47

Starlight, had a nosy (excuse the pun) at your photos and your nose looks lovely but obviously you arn't happy so good luck with your revision Smile.

I wish I had had the courage to say to my surgeon, just bob it tiny, but I was worried it would be too obvious and people would think I was vain. I never tell new people that I have had it done for that reason and also because they might think you should have gone further. I can remember getting virtually no support when I was having it done, except from a couple of friends. Family told me I shouldn't be doing it but I lived behind a horrible crocked nose for over 40 yrs. Sad

Remotew · 03/02/2011 09:52

To the OP, sorry didn't mean to ignore you. I would push for a free revision. Make an appointment with your surgeon and lay it on thick. Mine did the second procedure for nothing. I paid £2950 for the first op and I think they factor in the chance that you might need a correction.

StarlightPrincess · 03/02/2011 09:52

I have a secret...the reason why it looks good in those pics is because if you noticed, I only take them on my left side! If I had taken them from the right side, it would have been a whole different story! Grin

I look completely different on the left to the right as my nostrils are two different shapes. Well, not for much longer now!

You should't worry about what people would think abouteve, because it was you who had to live with a nose you hated, not them. I hate it when people judge others about things like this because at the end of the day it's your body, not theirs!

Remotew · 03/02/2011 10:02

I agree Starlight and if they had any empathy they would realise that you don't put yourself under a general anesthetic, two weeks down time in the middle of a hot summer and pay out alot of money (in my case) on a whim. I played it so safe that hardly anyone noticed. Had a few comments that something was different, was it my hair? Also that I looked well.

If I was much younger I might have gone for a third op but as I am getting on a bit I'll save it for a facelift. OJ Grin

Hope you are delighted after your next op.

StarlightPrincess · 03/02/2011 10:08

Thank you, I hope I am too! Might be able to look at a camera straight on for the first time in my life! Grin

Go to your GP and get a referral to your ENT dept of your local NHS hospital. If you are having breathing problems etc. they have to tackle it. I used to work for the NHS and they do lots of cosmetic revisions.
