Big Hair or not to Big Hair

Hi

Opinions on the Babyliss big Hair or the cheaper Tresemme version

Have both on reserve at Argos until tomorrow.

Neon, I can't really answer your question about how long it lasts, as the first time I used it I had to re-style it n curls for a fancy dress the next day, and I've just washed it today for the second time.

So my comment on getting longer-lasting style with a hairdryer was speculative really - it's just that it's a bit flatter than I'm able to achieve with a hairdryer (but, tbf, the hairdresser doesn't go for big volume and their style lasts about 5 days, I find).

OP - have a look in ASDA first.

Saw a post on moneysaving expert to say their local store had them scanning at £22.50!

Some stores also had the root boost crimper thing for £15 aswell.

I love my big hair. It has had such a dramatic effect on my hair. Mine is shoulder length, layered, very thick and frizzy normally (think dragged through several hedges backwards).

Now its shiny, looks better than straightened and has 'bounce' iyswim.

I still get a bit of frizz right at the roots as its hard to get the brush right to the end but my argan oil has just been delivered so I am hoping that will make a difference.

Thanks to Mumsnet I am starting to look vaguely presentable Smile

The BBH left my hair with lots of tiny broken ends. I've had to use loads of treatments on my hair to get it back into condition again.

I think the barrel could do with being a bit smaller too.

The BBH is not for me, so it's been consigned to the back of the draw.

OgreTripletsAreSoCute · 31/01/2011 14:39

My hair (shoulder length layers, lots of it, wavy/curly) looks much better since using the big hair, much smoother, also the straighter bits are wavier and the curly bits are straighter, so it is all lovely and bouncy. Can dry it from soaking in 15 mins with the big hair, I used to give up after about that long with a hairdryer because of achey arms and still not be finished. The effect lasts 3 days for me. Not much volume, but I don't need that, just a much better all round look. It is also pretty easy (especially makes a difference to doing at the back) and feels lovely and warm while you are doing it.

Robert Dyas had them for £35 at the weekend.

There is a morning and evening pic on my blog, I think.

It lasts the day. If I am going out in the evening (chance would be a fine thing) then I give it a quick boost before going out.

LadyBiscuit · 31/01/2011 14:40

Matts - I have very thick frizz-prone hair and it really helps smooth it out. It doesn't make it big but swishy (MN word of the week :o)

I find it's better the day after I've washed my hair but that may be because I'm a bit of an impatient bugger and rough drying my hair plus BBH is a bit of a fag

monkeysmama · 31/01/2011 14:44

Don't get the root booster! I've never owned such a useless product.

NeonCupcakes · 31/01/2011 15:06

Lady: yeah, the drying + BBH sounds a bit of a faff. But I usually wash/rough dry at night & straighten the next morning so we'll see.

But, I'm convinced. Expect to see me with 'swish' and 'bounce' in a few days.

MmeLindt · 31/01/2011 15:21

Neon
You can let your hair air dry till almost dry then use the BBH.

sweetheart · 31/01/2011 16:28

I went and brought a big hair at lunchtime (along with a few other products from the "it's changed my life" thread!!!) I got the root booster for xmas from dh and it is RUBBISH on my very fine hair so I'm giving this a go to see if it's any better.

If it's not I'm going to take it back and complain as I can't take the root booster thing back and I'll be annoyed if I'm another £50 down on useless hair products!

MattsBatt · 31/01/2011 16:47

I love the idea of letting your hair air dry and then using the BBH at the last minute - perfect for lazy slatterns time-pressed ladies like moi ... Also love the argan oil idea, apparently one of the 13 hairdressers (!) on our high street sells it so I'm going in there tomorrow to bag myself some. I'm so glad I rejoined Mumsnet!

minibmw2010 · 31/01/2011 16:54

I got the Big Hair and I do really love it, but it has also given me terrible split ends so I'm obviously not being as careful as I should be with it.

moragbellingham · 31/01/2011 16:59

Can anyone tell me how hot it gets?
My DD can't tolerate the hot setting of a hairdryer yet and runs off when I try to dry her hair. This would be good for both of us.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 31/01/2011 17:01

This talk of split ends has me worried. How long/how often did you use it before the damage appeared?

MmeLindt · 31/01/2011 17:21

There are two heat settings, my DD is fine with the lower setting.

As to split ends, I have been using mine for about a month and no problems. I do use a heat protection spray.

nowthen · 31/01/2011 21:43

I got split ends in the first week of using it. My hair started to feel rough and had a cotton wool feel to it.

My hair is fine, but there's a lot of it.

The general consensus seems to be that it's great, so give it a try. It might be fine for you.

ullainga · 01/02/2011 09:32

I've used it (or actually similar Babyliss one I bought in France, this ) for almost a year and have no problem with split ends or damage whatsoever. I always use it with some heat protection products though, usually Kerastase or Ojon.
