Seriously researching the possibility of a children's clothes shop in my local, pretty affluent, town.
I know what I like - I have what borders on an obsession for nice children's clothes, but I'd like to canvas your opinions.
I would not want to stock any of the following brands, for varying reasons:
Joules
Oilily
Ikks
Pampolina
Jean Bourget
or any of the ridiculously expensive, froufrou designer brands (like D&G, Miss Dior etc)
I favour mid-priced, individual, age-appropriate clothes and am particularly partial to Scandinavian and French childrenswear.
Share your favourites with me (links to sites would be good)

What about Little Darlings ?

Think this is a British designer to boot!

To those idiots that have put Primark and the like- bog off- the OP was clearly talking about quality clothes and your comments are just typical of Mumsnets inverse snobbery!

I've bought from Tesco and Primark in the past and their clothes are rubbish- all shrunk and mishapen in a few washes. I like my dd to be dressed nicely in lovely clothes which I then sell on ebay for a great return.

I have been noseying about some of the websites mentioned. WHat lovely clothes! I would def buy in sales so will bookmark them all. Thanks.

nancy75 · 29/01/2011 15:42

i second mayoral, for babies abella (i think it is a british make)
would you also do shoes? I don't have too much trouble finding clothes for DD but i find shoes much harder.

countrysidemummy · 22/02/2011 16:28

Hanna Andersson have lovely things which we always buy if we are in the US. Also Mini Boden, Joules, Frugi (they now do up to age 8) and John Lewis. Oh, and Startrite for shoes.

Here in Spain we seem to have a lot more choice for children´s clothes. A few people mentioned Mayoral, I don´t know if it the same but here there is a Mayoral in most big towns. I also like Agatha Ruiz de La Prada for its very colourful designs. I also like Lacoste and Ralph Lauren polo shirts and polo dresses in the sales, Benetton and Charanga.

Housewife2010 · 22/02/2011 22:15

Darcy Brown clothes are gorgeous. They're traditional and very well made.

bristolcities · 22/02/2011 22:17

Marimekko is fantastic and the obvious choice if you like scandinavian design.

Zara kids i love as well for unfussy kids clothes and of course Gap.

VinoEsmeralda · 22/02/2011 22:19

Vingino - perfect for skinny kids
Mayoral
Mexx
Esprit
Didi
Ralph Lauren
Noppies

Caz10 · 22/02/2011 22:21

This is a genuine question - how do you know about all of these places??!

Pluto · 22/02/2011 22:26

Snoozy
Molo
Polarn o Pyret
H&M

CWallace · 01/03/2011 14:55

What about Elias and Grace or their own label Miller?

overmydeadbody · 01/03/2011 17:36

Here is what I would want from a children's clothes shop:

  1. Affordable. More than a tenner for a t shirt is overpriced, imo.
  1. Brightly coloured interesting boy's clothes.
  1. No camouflage boy's clothes
  1. Things like ties, in bright colours for boys. And suspenders, and bow ties. My DS is obsessed with wearing ties, but no where sells nice ones apart from Etsy, so I make my own for him.
  1. Trousers and jeans with re-enforced knees or patches on the knees already. Seriously. Why don't the shops do this? It would save me a lot of time sewing on patches.
Francagoestohollywood · 01/03/2011 17:55

Best children's clothes ever used to be made by:
Quincy, but I believe it doesn't exist anymore.

I like Imps and Elfs
Kaatvig
BonTon
Molo
Petit Bateau.
Gap (for ds)

H&M and Zara used to be much better, I find them quite disappointing at the moment

Francagoestohollywood · 01/03/2011 17:56

Ah and Decathlon, decathlon is great

Umnitsa · 01/03/2011 19:06

DD is only 6 months old so my experience is limited to baby clothes. She is long and skinny so French clothes fit her best: Petit Bateau, Petit Lem, Jacadi, Lili Gaufrette, Sucre d'Orge, Absorba, Catimini. I buy most of them new on e-bay though!

I also like babygrows by the Gro Company because of the way the foot of the babygrow is fashioned in a sock and does not fall off little feet.

One thing I've noticed is how difficult it is to find girly clothes which are not pink. I will pay a premium for a pretty aqua dress!

mamatomany · 01/03/2011 19:24

Can i point out that often the affluent parts of towns are not the best places to find mummies with disposable income, we've had three shops like these open and close in the last 5 years.
The one doing very well is right in the centre of the most deprived area in the country.

MrsDrOwenHunt · 13/04/2011 19:18

just brought a couple of hatley items for ds as i just fell in love with them!! and they had dinosaurs on them! i wear primani!!!

DonaAna · 13/04/2011 19:22

Scandinavian: Me Too, Ticket to Heaven, Danefae, Molo Kids, Cupcake. And H&M of course Grin

FattyAcid · 13/04/2011 19:58

These shops rarely last more than 2 years - nice idea but in all honestly I would suggest that you are throwing your money away on a lifestyle/hobby business - I doubt this is what you want to hear though

I am very keen on hoovering up the closing down sale bargains from these shops and I also love the scandi brands and french brands
