Am I conceding to being old if I have my hair cut?

IslaValargeone · 27/01/2011 14:18

I am in my 40's, have long hair with fringe, very straight.
I feel I am being aged by my hair and would love to be a bit more chic. I'm wondering however that if I go short I am surrendering to the fact I'm old and past it Wink
What is a nice feminine cut for an over 40 person.

My friend had long (mid back length) hair right up until her early 60s... But she is an artist :) She now has a short pixie cut which is very becoming. Best thing to do is buy a hairstyle magazine and/or look through lots of sleb mags until you see something you really like (that isn't on a teenager).

IslaValargeone · 27/01/2011 14:25

Everything looks good on the slebs though doesn't it? and I am no Halle Berry or Sharon Stone I can tell you. I shall peruse some stuff.

I'm havong the same predicament.
I have long brown hair which is neglected & permenantly up in a ponytail or hidden under a hat.
I have seen the style I like but I am to scared cautious.

I don't have much time to myself in the mornings & a short cut needs attention.

Not much help, sorry.

cut it off, it is aging and long old hair is creepy.

campocaro · 27/01/2011 14:56

Had mine cut off this year (I'm 51). The style is the same I had when I was in my early 20's. Everyone says it takes years off me...still have it dyed though-i'll wait til my 60s for that to stop...

pagwatch · 27/01/2011 15:04

I am 49. I still have shoulder length hair. I don't think it is creepy or ageing as long as it is cut well. A sheet of hair and fringe can be a problem. Layers framing the face on the other hand can be quite flattering.

It depends on how your face us ageing and upon the cut.
I am on my profile. I have to keep the layers around my face and it is so thick it needs really regular cutting.
But no, choosing your hair cut because of your age rather than bone structure and type of cut is daft.

Remotew · 27/01/2011 15:07

I'm 49 and I'm not getting mine cut anytime soon!

bigTillyMint · 27/01/2011 15:10

I am 46 and I did have almost waist-length hair till I was about 42. It was a bit aging, so I have had it cut progressively shorter and shorter, as I couldn't do it all in one go.

It is now slightly longer than shoulder length in a layered, shaped style, still with fringe!

bigTillyMint · 27/01/2011 15:13

Just looked at Pags profile, and it's similar to hers (though blonde!).

Infact, my "hobbies " are v similar too Blush

Grin I will have to go and see what they are.. May have changed since 2007.....

DuplicitousBitch · 27/01/2011 18:15

pag your hair is lovely. the creepy hair i refer to is the longer straggly type

Catsmamma · 27/01/2011 18:21

Once age starts to creep up then I think you have to be more groomed, so well styled, in good condition long hair is fine, ratty, dry, straw hanging around the face...not so much.

plasticface · 27/01/2011 18:25

What a lovely house you have pagwatch!

TheSleepFairy · 27/01/2011 21:57

Sod pags house, your dog is absoloutly gorgeous (as are your children but I have 3 of my own so would prefer the dog) [Grin

TheSleepFairy · 27/01/2011 21:59

absolutely even - wtf happened there!!?

FelicityParpworth · 27/01/2011 22:09

Mine is in danger of becoming the straggly sort. I'm having it cut soon but into something funky . Anybody got any nice not-too-short bob type styles they can link to?

MrsSeanBean · 27/01/2011 22:18

One option could be to lose the fringe, maybe change your parting.

Fringes can be very juvenile looking on some people (though ok on others obv)

Agree with previous posters - I think over 40s can keep it long-ish, depending on hair type and what sits you etc etc - but not really-long-down-the-back-just-hanging-long. You sometimes see hair that is just long for the sake of it IYKWIM, and that looks wrong on any age IMO.

TheSleepFairy · 27/01/2011 22:20

I like this, although my hair is brown & I look like casper the ghost on crack.

FelicityParpworth · 27/01/2011 22:23

Oh I LOVE that style, thesleepfairy. My hair is quite thin fine, do you think it would be ok in a style like that?

FelicityParpworth · 27/01/2011 22:24

That's too short for me too.

TheSleepFairy · 27/01/2011 22:29

My hair is frizzy curly so i worry about needing to straighten it every day.

Felicity don't ask me about style, I am worzel gummidge in drag.

I have asked lot's of people about both pics & everyone thinks I should go for link number one but I am very scared not sure.
