Help!

I'm due to return to the UK this year after living in a hot country for the last 10 years. I have no idea what the latest fashion trends are and would really appreciate some help.

I'm 40, size 8-10 (I think). I don't have a lot of money but would like to buy some basics that I can mix and match to start with.

Which shops can you recommend?

Which items of clothes are basic to any wardrobe?

Shoes?

Thank you very much

I would suggest visiting a good department store, like John Lewis. Lots of brands under one roof and you can have a look and see what you like. You could even make an appointment with a personal shopper.

Brands I like would be Gap, French Connection, Warehouse, Whistles, Monsoon, Boden

As for wardrobe staples - currently pretty chilly here in the UK so skinny jeans, vests, Ts, fitted cardis, Tunics, opaque tights and tea dresses with riding boots.

When summer comes, it will be linen trousers, vests, cotton dresses, flip flops and wedge sandals

Agree with Meggles.

Except for the notes on summer. Usually in UK summer I can be found trying to seek shelter from torrential rain in my ski jacket whilst wondering if frostbite is serious risk to my fingers :o

Everyone here is wearing hot pink leggings. Or rainbow flares. With platform trainers, of course.

Knitted tank tops are a timeless essential, worn with matching scrunchies and shirts with batwing collars.

Puffball skirts are de rigueur and nobody can get enough of global hypercolour t shirts.

I don''t live in England (have been away for ten years, like you, but not in a hot country!) but I do visit often and what stands out in England is that people wear whatever they want. Many of them are slaves to fashion, but many others aren't, and there is a huge amount of individuality when it comes to clothes.

Don't spend a fortune yet on clothes. Give yourself a chance to adjust to the climate, think about your style, and find shops that suit you, which may be the big high street stores, or interesting little boutiques.

Size 8 - 10? Tsk. You need to gain a few stone to fit in - perhaps aim at that UK average size 16. Which will also help with feeling the cold - I'm size 18 - 20 and barely ever need the heating on.

Depends a bit where you are going to live. Round our way you would do fine by entering either White Stuff or Fat Face and handing over several months' wages. But I do live in a notoriously unfashionable town.

Depends where abouts in England your moving too- London?

I'm moving to York.

Jeans: bootleg, skinny or baggy?
Shoes: dainty or platforms?
tops /t shirts: tight or flared?

Is Next a good place to shop?

York- city or rural?

Boden I am afraid.

Northface long black coat.

Next is not a good place to shop.

Hats are big in York- probably as it's so cold.

Changeisagoodthing · 22/01/2011 22:51

Joules is quite big in Yorkshire as well.

Don't forget pyjamas for the school run!

I would find yourself a warm coat and a waterproof jacket(if you don't already have one). Perhaps you could find something in the on line sales. There are a lot of bargains on labels like Moncler atm if you want to spend a couple of hundred pounds. When are you planning to arrive in the UK? It might make a big difference regarding which items to getin advance.

Also, warm boots. I don't know how up-to-the-minute fashionable you want to be, but shearling lined boots were supposed to be very last month, so have been reduced a lot in the sales. I personally like my feet to be warm and waterproof as a high priority, so have been stocking up on warm boots. Apparently, "biker" is going to be a big fashion look in the next year.

I moved back north from a tropical country about 6 months ago. What a mistake. Forget fashion and be prepared to spend substantially on wellies, waterproof coats, anything Goretex, merino, cashmere, even fur. You'll find your old haunts freezing and will need a minimum of two or three layers at all times. Don't forget woolen socks, gloves, mittens, hats, long underwear etc. Light cashmere sweaters are great for summer.

Your old clothes won't be fine, unless they are from the 80s. Whatever used to be skimpy when you left is now loose and draped, and whatever used to be loose is extremely fitted right now.

Need I say more? Moving back to a balmier climate later this year...
