Thinking of dying my hair, but what colour?

I need a bit of help, I'm thinking of dying my hair, either highlights or all over, but I don't know what colour to try.

I have only ever dyed my hair once before and that was years ago. I have brown shoulder length hair that i'm growing a little longer as my hair dresser got scissor happy and it was too short for my liking!

I have(hopefully) put a picture of me on my profile. Excuse the dodgy pose, I was a little drunk at a wedding! My hair is now a little longer than in the pic, if that makes any difference in terms of colouring?!Hmm

If you fancy a change but nothing too drastic, ask your hairdresser to recreate your hair colour when you were a child (i.e. subtle highlights if you were a little fairer). Just need to take in a good photo with you.

Or if you fancy something a little more drastic then a red hue is quite popular at the moment.

Thanks, I have been thinking red, well not red but a bit red! but my hairdresser and another trainee haridresser suggest i'd be better going a bit more blonde.

Ds suggested pink but he's 3 Grin

I'm just not sure if red will suit me?

Judging by your photo I'd say a brownt-red would look quite nice and it is in fashion at the moment.

Be careful not to go too dark though, If you decide you don't like it it will be really hard to get out. (trust me i died my hair black 4 years ago and havent been able to change it since!)

Envy of your nice eyebrows btw >>weirdo emotion

passtheearplugs · 16/01/2011 22:55

browny-red* obviously

planestrainsautomobiles · 16/01/2011 22:58

Yes a brown / red might be a good start and then if you like it you could go for a more vibrant red the next time. On the other hand if you're not keen on the red it does tend to fade quickly (according to my hairdresser).

Have you got an appt booked - let us know how you get on Grin

Eddas · 16/01/2011 23:12

Grin thanks for the compliment on the eyebrows passtheearplugs you weirdow WinkGrin can't say that's something i've been complimented on before Grin

I haven't got an appointment, or much money so I was thinking of trying to do it myself. Is this a bad idea? A girl at work says she does it all the time and it's easy but I've never done it before so am a bit worried i'll do it wrongGrin

I thought I could try a fairly slight change and then if I do it wrong hopefully it won't notice?

Or should I use my hairdresser?

I would only try to dye it myself if I do browny-red not blonde

If you are doing it yourself - definitely don't go blonde. It will look horrible. Only ever do highlights at a salon - and even then with a really experienced colourist. It costs money, I'm afraid, but it's the only way for it to look good. You would only need a half-head though, as your hair isn't that dark.

If I were you, I'd go for a semi-permanent red - see what you think, nothing too drastic. If you like it, go brighter, next time. I think it will suit you (although blonde would be good too).

Post the pics when you've done it!

passtheearplugs · 17/01/2011 00:20

always happy to help with my weirdness Grin

Eddas · 17/01/2011 11:34

Belle, no I wouldn't attmept blonde myself.

I think I'll be brave and buy something to do myself

I'll try something subtle so it'll probably end up looking exactly the sameGrin I might wait until a night when I have the next day free so I can get to a hairdresser sharpish to get it fixed if it goes wrong Grin

I've just been and bought some hair dye and would you believe it, a friend who is training in hairdressing at college had mentioned back in Oct(ish) me coming in for her to practice on and she's just asked if I still want to go! So now I have hair dye and the offer of someone to do it for me Grin

I think i'll take the dye back.

So now I need to definately decide on colour any other opinions greatly received and thank you for those who've posted so farSmile
