casual daytime dresses - advice?

last season I got a couple of above knee wool dresses that I have loved all winter - they worked with boots, ballet pumps and even wellies for walks with friends. Anyone got any advice for something that might work just as well in spring? I've had a bit of a look but most of the dresses I've seen look more for work so any help would be hugely appreciated!

The others were about £60 and I wear them so much they were well worth it - and I'm a size 10, the pale and freckly type and can't wear polo necks (they strangle me for some reason, must have strange neck Blush)

Monsoon? They usually have nice day dresses.

FaffTastic · 16/01/2011 20:09

If you're looking for spring and don't want wool dresses, what about tea-dresses with a chunky cardigan? I tend to wear mine in spring with flat boots or shoe-boots along with black tights and a chunky knit. Also works with flat pumps

MrsShrekTheThird · 16/01/2011 20:12

I hate polo necks too Grin
I've ended up at New look for a good few for this season, which will happily go into spring. Agree with the monsoon idea. Also take a look at ASOS?

lilacisinlove · 16/01/2011 20:28

I have this one which I know others on here also bought after I linked to it for opinions!

HelenBa · 16/01/2011 20:36

you're great! I actually started with Monsoon before posting but thought this season was a bit of a let down. I love the m&s one though now really like the idea of leaveing wool and going for tea dress - and can't believe I had never met ASOS before!

what do you think to this with a cardigan to dress it down?

prettymuchapixiegirl · 16/01/2011 21:49

I am so with you on the polo neck thing; they make me feel very claustrophobic.

I got a jersey shift dress from ASOS the other day, very plain and simple with sleeves, and I'm wearing it today with black tights. Something like that could work for spring, and summer too.

lilacisinlove · 16/01/2011 21:49

I also have this one...perhaps it would fit the bill too?

lilacisinlove · 16/01/2011 21:50

By the way, most dresses on Asos seem to be mini or maxi...I'm too short for maxi, and as a primary teacher can't wear mini, so I tend to avoid the site completely.

had another thought (that's two thoughts in a night...blimey Grin)
Take a nosey here and at other Red Herring stuff - I love 'em (some fantastic, some completely inappropriate heehee)

planestrainsautomobiles · 16/01/2011 22:32

Floral tea dress here. Currently reduced and looks gorgeous on the model.

Will take you through to Spring with ballet pumps but can wear now with tights / boots and cardies.

Clure · 16/01/2011 22:53

I have been wearing lots of little floral dresses/tunics with leggings and long cardi's and boots. I love tea dresses!
love this
tried this on, lovely but a bit long for my 5'1 height
currently living in this
I have a dorothy perkins one from last season which is a tshirt fabric skater style dress
this

HelenBa · 16/01/2011 23:07

great ideas, and I definitely should re-consider new look

I can't bring myself to wear leggings as i am old enough to have been wearing them in the 90s with tie dye tops...

OP posts:
MrsShrekTheThird · 16/01/2011 23:17

and Why Not .... we all wear leggings and we're in our (shhhh) 40's. bollocks to it says me Grin

HelenBa · 16/01/2011 23:21

i think it's because it makes me feel as though I'm dressing up as a teenager and i did not look cool!

OP posts:
MrsShrekTheThird · 16/01/2011 23:23
Grin I think I actually do a better job of wearing them this time round, heehee
daimbardiva · 17/01/2011 09:31

Hee hee, I still giggle at the fact I wear leggings now, and tea dresses as I was a total grunge-kid as a teenager, did the whole leggings/floaty top thing and used to wear tea dresses with combat boots!

fruitstick · 17/01/2011 09:33

I felt the same about leggings. Far too many memories of cider and black!

However, I am now a convert and they are so much more comfortable than jeans.

I am a very lazy shopper so tend to just buy things from the White Stuff and hope nobody notices that I am page 28.

Clure · 17/01/2011 18:01

leggings for me the first time round too! I'm 43 now and shuddered at wearing them but there are some good well fitting ones, really look like 110d tights but better coverage! Not like the manky baggy kneed jersey types I used to wear back in the 80's!! Grin

FaffTastic · 17/01/2011 20:39

See here for chunky knits to go with all your lovely new tea dresses!

HelenBa · 17/01/2011 21:29

ooh excellent (hops over)

still thinking about leggings and have ordered to the white stuff catalogue to see what they look like on grown ups but concerned it might be a slippery slope from there to purple to doc martens and spending all day in a dodgy pub playing pool...

OP posts:
MrsShrekTheThird · 17/01/2011 22:44

pmsl HelenBa Grin
you forgot to mention the twelve pints of dodgy lager in said dodgy pub Wink
