Skin care - how on earth do you choose?

I would like to invest in some good skin care products, I currently use a mish mash of products. In the past I guess my fav has been Liz Earle and I could just restock some of that but I was wondering about trying something different but where on earth do you start? Going into John Lewis/Debenhams I am bombarded with beauty counters and of course whichever one I go to will say their product is the best for me Confused

I used Sisley (v expensive) samples for over 3 years before I forked out for a cream. They are pretty generous with samples. My line is that I have been using a competitor's products but am looking for a change. I was forced to buy the cream when they stopped sampling that particular one.

Have already mentioned this on another thread, but after years of spending a small fortune on skin products, I went and saw a dermatologist last year, having had adult acne.

£90 for the appointment, but money well spent. She prescribed me Retin-A gel at £8, a cleansing wash with salycic acid at £26 and said to use Oilatum cream and a sunscreen instead of cosmetic moisturiser.

Not as exciting as going to a shop and having the experience, but my skin never looked better!

Before that, my favourite products were by Kiehl's, but I used to travel to the States regularly where I could buy them in bulk and much cheaper than the UK.

Clinique are generally a good place to start - except for the Clarifying lotions which are a bit harsh for most people. Their moisturisers, serums and cleansers are good. Also Estee Lauder skincare is actually very good in general.

I've used Boots No7 in the past too and been happy with it.

Most important thing is always to use an SPF15 + during the day.

A mish mash is fine - you don't have to be loyal to a brand Smile
