What colour highlights should I get?

I'm getting highlights for my birthday as a treat. I have very dark hair, and I'm in my early 30s, currently on maternity leave. I'm tempted to go for pink, but it may not grow out in time to go back to work. I was also thinking of blonde highlights but then I saw Tamsin Greig in Episodes and I'm really not sure... My hairstyle is sort of like that but a bit spikier, and a lot darker. WWYD?

Think Tamsin Greig looks awful. She's way too sallow for highlights and is not wearing any slap either, so they are washing her out. In your case, I suppose it depends on your skin tone. you sound dark-skinned, so pink may be sensational on you, particularly with a funky style. I'd go for it; you can always have them redone before returning to work. Chances are they'd grow out anyway before then.

I'd maybe go for a cherry or a plum. A hint of the pink but something you could get away with at work. Have a chat with your hairdresser when you go in. When I had mine done they matched my hair colour up to their book and gave me all the different colours that would be the right tones for me.

Thanks, I'm very pale skinned and yes, I thought Tamsin G's look wasn't doing her any favours. Hadn't thought about getting highlights redone before returning to work, but that might work... I can see me spending hours faffing with the book at the hairdressers! Just feel so frumpy post-preg, I need something to update my look.

a warm reddish colour or you could have a chestnutty colour and/or a darker plummy colour too go discuss it with your hairdresser they can show you the shade charts (not that they are exactly how the colour takes on your own hair) .
As for Tamsin G sorry but i think her highlights look grey and she looks very aged by her colour

Hey, Wild. I am v fair skinned, blue eyes and naturally horrid mousey boring hair Grin

I'm getting mine done tomorrow. I get 3 different colours put through it. As I have a v pinky skin tone, I don't do red colours ie plums or cherry. I get (this is my hairdresser speak) caramels and dark blondes. Then once she has the foils on, she will do the whole of my base colour a rich chesnut.

I don't like a 'hair dyed' look and this really suits me !

I hadn't even thought about getting more than one colour through - you can tell it's my first time, can't you? [grins]

Thanks ladies, that gives me a much better starting point to talk to my hairdresser.

They shouldn't charge you any more for more than one colour either !

Hope it goes well, let us know how you get on.

Thanks all - hair's been done, two copper tones put through, which - after initial freakout when foils came off that they were ginger - actually looks pretty good! Suits my skintone better than 'au naturel'!
