Had a conversation with a fellow yummy mummy today and both thought the same thing at the toddler group - we all look the same!! When did I morph into a yummy white stuff tunic wearing mummy! Grin Obviously there is fashions people follow and certain ages follow certain types but at early thirties I am not ready to wear calf length skirts - I am I??? Shock. I do like white stuff and boden and like the quality but now I have a nice collection I feel old and boring and need a change! I like the idea of tea dresses but not too long not too short with boots or converse trainers - think Topshop is calling again! Thinking of wearing something different this spring/summer - but what Confused please help me! Size 12 5' 10" Tall - need ideas for fun/casual/pretty Smile

I love dresses,and I am 40+ Smile
Oasis,Warehouse,Boden,White Stuff Wink Phase Eight,Top Shop.
I layer in winter with boots and tights/leggings depending on length, then bare legs/leggings in spring/summer with wedges/ballet flats.
I don't do longer than knee length.
I do wear trousers/jeans/jeggings,and I like wide legs with wedges.
Can you 'funk up' the tunics/skirts with jewellery/belts/scarves?
I always wear jewellery/scarves.
I know what you mean though!

ShoppingDays · 10/01/2011 23:00

If I was 5'10" and a 12, I'd go for a printed tunic and leggings :)

SickOnMyShoulder · 11/01/2011 08:56

Get out of your tunic tops and leggings! This spring will be all about 60s and 70s looks, so dig out your old flares and wear them with colourful tops, or buy calf length A-line skirts to wear with little cardies and big heels

Emo76 · 11/01/2011 09:19

You sound like you have the kind of figure and build to carry off lots of different looks! Try shirts instead of tunics with a great pair of jeans (I bet you could carry off flares!)

Dunno, but marking my place on this thread cos I'm right where you are Grin

BeattieBow · 11/01/2011 09:52

I went to a toddler group last week and thought the same - alot of the mums did look the same! White stuff is mumsy i think and wouldn't be on the radar of most Bright Young Things. My mum who is in her 60ss loves White Stuff!!

There are mums that wear different clothes though and look fashionable rather than mumsy. (don't ask me though, because i don't wear White Stuff or Boden, but couldn't call myself an interesting dresser!)

MakemineaGandT · 11/01/2011 09:56

Agree. I wouldnt wear any Boden, White Stuff, Joules etc etc - I think it looks boring. The Joules stuff especially looks like big versions of childrens clothes if you ask me. Clothes that style forgot Grin

Having said that, lots of people do seem to like that "look".....

I tend to shop regularly to keep an idea of changing fashions, and I don't spend too much (I buy a lot in H&M) - that way if something is a bit of a mistake it doesn't matter too much. And I wear a lot of accessories to make things more interesting - scarves, costume jewellery, etc

traceybath · 11/01/2011 10:36

You need to get back in top shop, warehouse etc.

A denim mini skirt, opaques and a nice top. Skinnies with again good top, boots is a more current look.

You're young, tall and slim - please ditch the tunic tops.

Chandon · 11/01/2011 11:39

I am size 12-14 and 6ft1 (so comparable shape I imagine, though I am even taller....sob).

I changed to tunics and leggings look, and find it looks good and is comfy to wear.

Just get GOOD quality leggings and cool boots.

I also wear short dresses or minis skirts with opaque tights and boots. Or even "jeggings" under a tunic or oversize jumper.

Chandon · 11/01/2011 11:42

Tracybath, the secret is in fitted tunic tops, with shape, like mini dress, not baggy ones.

traceybath · 11/01/2011 12:14

Oh I'm sure there are nice tunic tops chandon Smile

But if I was 5ft 10 and in my early 30's - well I'd leave them for a bit and embrace some other stuff.

One tunic is fine but not to wear every day.

I also think Joules/White Stuff/Boden should be worn sparingly especially if young.

GeorginaWorsley · 11/01/2011 12:16

I agree that wearing tunicy things every day is boring.
I wore a silk dress yesterday with thermal top under, long cardigan over, tights and boots.
Today am in skinnies, boots, layered tees and shorter cardigan.
My rule is never wear the same kind of outfit two days running!

chickenlickin · 11/01/2011 12:42

think I need to make the change slowly as will look a bit weird suddenly turning up at the school gates in a floral playsuit!Grin (showed my DP a playsuit in the new next directory and he wet himself laughing - git). Had a dream last night that I said fuck off to yummy mummy fashion and donned skinney jeans, a pink tutu and metalic trainers! (quite like that look actually)!Grin Yep a change is needed - never really liked to follow the crowd and now I am! (dressed in fly london boots, boden leggings, white stuff tunic and long coat). Need pictures for inspiration please! Then will have to mix and match with 'vintage' (car boot and ebay!!!!) Oh and Dp will kill me as spent ages saying that by buying all these nice expensive clothes are an investment, will cheer me up as feel fat after having babies blablabla!!!Wink

I think I am turning into this :( What are your alternatives though? (I'm 32).

PlanetLizard · 11/01/2011 14:06
Quenelle · 11/01/2011 14:36

Isn't White Stuff just slightly more expensive Fat Face?

Am a bit concerned now because I'm sitting at my desk wearing Fly London boots and Fat Face tunic with jeans. I thought I was looking particularly 'with-it' today Confused

taffetacat · 11/01/2011 14:44

White Stuff is a bit less casual than Fat Face, I think, and I prefer it as theres a lot of greens and blues, where Fat Face is purples and browns.

But then hey what do I know, atm I am liking People Tree. I am well old, though.

plasticface · 11/01/2011 16:07

Just looked on White Stuff website and think their stuff looks really nice....and I'm only 29! Oh dear.

I just bought a wool dress in the White Company sale which is kind of boring but SO warm and comfy! Is that so wrong...? Confused

traceybath · 11/01/2011 16:27

Nothing is wrong - everyone should wear what they want/like/feel good in.

However Chicken posted saying she wanted to wear different stuff hence some suggestions.

Agree with Chandon - fitted tunics are fine but too often you see people wearing them because they think they cover them up - especially empire line ones. And well they can make people look pregnant.

But I'm 5ft so don't really do tunics unless wearing as a dress Smile

But I am a tad muttong Wink

I would love to wear Boden and White Stuff and to hell with the "mumsy" label (don't go to toddler groups anymore so don't care!) but I can't afford them! I live in Sainsbury's clothes...
