Curling DDs hair - it's not working!!

medoitmama · 09/01/2011 10:24

DD is 4 and I wanted to curl her otherwise straight hair for her 5th bday party. She's desperate to have it done. Thing is I've tried it and it lasted about 10 minutes!

I bought some ceramic tongs (Angel Curls I think they're called). Should I be putting something in/on her hair to make curls last? like a mouse or something? Or is it because tongs are rubbish. Should I be using my GHDs instead?? Or just book her into hair dressers on the morning of her party!!

I don't know what to suggest.

My friend has hair that just won't curl, even her hairdresser friend tried and the curls fell only lasted a couple of minutes! She's getting married soon and doesn't know what to do as most wedding styles are curly!

I have the world's straightest hair and when I was little my Grandma used to rag my hair effectively into ringlets. Rip up a sheet/pillow case/duster and wrap strips of wet hair around them and tie into knots on top of head. Leave to dry/sleep overnight and it'll come out as ringlets.

Tortoise · 09/01/2011 13:59

I rag DD's hair which makes it curl brilliantly. Just wrap wet hair in strips of material and leave in over night.

Panzee · 09/01/2011 14:06

My hair doesn't curl well. It's fine and straight and there is loads of it. The best way is for me to rag/put sponge curlers in and leave it in overnight.

TheProvincialLady · 09/01/2011 14:08

Rag curling is great, but you might find she hates it and can't sleep, which is not good for the night before her birthday party.

catchafallingstar · 09/01/2011 14:17

Again I'd go with the rag method- it's how my mum dis mine. However is also Agee it's agony to sleep in and the rags have to be very tight so ax not to come out in the night, so the 'raggobg' process can be sore too.

Try curling on dirty hair ( do not wash before hand). Put mousse in dry hair and comb through. Cover each section with hairspray before you curl it.

Do your dd's hair just before the party.

ivykaty44 · 09/01/2011 14:20

I would go with mouse on clean wet hair let it dry and leave for two days, then tong tightly and time, then spray each ringlet with hair spray, making sure your dd's eyes are tight shut

Not tried rags on my dd's, although I seem to remember my grandma did it on me a couple of times.

Just to add, I got dd a curling wand for Christmas and we've had quite a bit of success with it.

I do it for her though - gawd knows how you'd do it on yourself without burning - but the results have been lovely and natual looking wavey ringlets. They're not tight ringlets though, so not ok if that's the look you're after.

Deaddei · 09/01/2011 14:53

Try bendy rollers

medoitmama · 09/01/2011 19:55

I love MNers! You can ask any old thing and they come up with a solution! Right, I'll try the rag thing a while before her party, (not until beginning of April) and see if she sleeps! If not might trial again with just the top section of hair. If that works I could then tong bottom section just before party with mouse and spay.

Not keen to invest in more tongs at mo as I'm skint!! But will bare curling wand in mind for future reference Bendy.

Thanks to all. Fingers crossed! Smile

ragging is meant to be good but I never tried it - my hair is likt it has been ironed straight! But I had slim tongues and on each strip placed a bit of wax first - has always worked for me - had it done when i got married that way too! But don't use too much - I did once and I had to wash my hair with fairy liquid and bicarb to get it all out Blush

TitianTinselTemptress · 09/01/2011 20:08

I have some (very 90's) heated bendy curlers which I bought for a song off ebay, and I use them with this - heat curlers, spray onto each section of hair before putting the curler in, leave to cool down completely, remove curlers and comb through with fingers - fantastic curls and long lasting hold (I sound like an advert!) plus no need for uncomfy rags overnight.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 09/01/2011 20:08

A warning! The rags made my nieces hair look like a mad afro...she has fine soft and silky hair. So if you DDs hair is like that then she ma look like Shirley Temple on a bad day.

For me, the best thing is those cheapo rollers...the kind from the chemist which are sort of soft and spiky like velcro...wait till DDs hair is washed...rub some mousse in ...dry it and then put them in....leave for an hour...put the dryer on them and then remove.

medoitmama · 09/01/2011 20:26

Yes Wimple DD1s hair is exactly like that. Fine, soft and silky. DD2 on the other hand looks a bit like Shirly Temple on a bad day every day! She'll never need tongs!

I have hair like this Sad. Even the hairdressers cannot get a slight wave to stay in without loads and LOADS of products ( mousse or other styling product and hairspray)

definitely do a practice run in case she hates the feel of all the gunk in her hair. my hair was SOLID on my wedding day

how we suffer to be beautiful Wink

WimpleOfTheBallet · 09/01/2011 20:52

Do it damp then medoitmama...and use a LITTLE product...just a small sized blob. WIth fine hair, it's hard to get it to stick tgether to form a curl...try doing the lower third in ringlets rather than all the way up...looks nice but will be easier.

sazm · 10/01/2011 21:52

hey,we borrowed my sisters angel curls and they did work but you have to hold the tong on the strand of hair for about 30-40 seconds for it to curl properly.
we bought a curling wand and it is FABBY :) takes about 5-10mins to do all her hair and looks lovely (she is 4 btw)
you can get different barrel sizes depending on whether you want looser curls or tight ringlets.we have the middle sized one,we got it in tkmaxx its an ionika one and it was £19.99

alexflower · 17/01/2011 14:34

I have this problem too on my own hair - very straight and hates being curled.

Tying in rags is the only way to sort it, I have never had a problem with them pulling/hurting my head when asleep I just use a cut up old cotton pillow slip and if they get in my face just wrap a bandana round my hair to sleep.

Can also get your daughter to wear a hat (not too snug) to cover the hair whilst in rags if she wouldnt get too hot.

Would suggest too when you try it out if her hair goes crazy curly you could do it for the day before the party, then on the day just touch it up with the curling iron. The day after I find the curls look a bit better :)

Hope this helps! Good luck!
