Lipstick?

victoriascrumptious · 08/01/2011 16:31

I've never really worn lipstick but my lips are getting really dry and I look a bit washed out. I have no idea what colour to buy.

I have fair skin with yellow undertone and light brown hair. My teeth although not manky are not bleached and my lips are not thin

What would suit this season?

glosses are prob better - are kinder and more moisturising?

teta · 08/01/2011 16:45

Clinique vitamin c smoothie is good - is a thicker moisturising lip gloss. Also Burts Bees tinted lip shimmers.I have a similar colouring to you [albeit with blonde highlights] and rhubarb and peony colours are nice on [peony is very natural].They are very soothing for dry lips.

Agree about the burts bees tinted balms, really nice, also Benetint balm by benefit is quite nice, gives your lips a really nice flush. A trick I tell people to do (make up artist) when their lips are looking a bit tired/dry is get a baby toothbrush (the softest you can find) and really gently go over your lips with a bit of vaseline on it, in little circles, it gets rid of all the dry chapped skin and improves the circulation, bringing back the colour and fullness to the lips, then put on a really hydrating balm. This is also a good thing to do when prepping for lipstick application as bits of dry skin really show up under lipstick. If your self concious about your teeth appearing yellow then stay away from yellowy/orangy based colours and try and find something with more of a blue/purple undertone. Hope that helps.

Kiehls lip balm in 'Icy Everest' - gives a nice colour but not as sticky or 'gloopy' as a lip gloss.

If you want to go for a real lipstick, try to go for a fairly bright red that has a bit of coral or orange in it. Sharper, brighter, slightly orangey true reds will also give you a jolt of color. Stay away from blue-tinged reds as they will make your teeth look yellow.

It's kind of hard to explain what I mean but Max Factor # 837 Sunbronze has been a great, easy-to-wear neutral but not insipid color. And any lipstick shade that makes you think "cinnamon apple" will probably work well.

Agree with others that lipstick will looks better on conditioned lips. But I'll have to say that if you learn to wear lipstick, lip gloss will never feel the same - I hate the constant need reapply, a good lipstick stays put for hours and hours.

I like Max Factor lip finity and Max Factor lip pens.

I have just spent all of December on a search for the best lip balm.

I have tried all of the following to no avail.

Vaseline
Lipsalve
Lypsyl
Chapstick
Blisteze (now Blistex relief cream)
Carmex
Burt's Bees
Bottom Butter
Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream
Palmer's

Left to try are:

Blistex
Nivea
Body Shop
Lush
Germolene
Simple
Badger Balm (Using this one at the moment and I like it)

nappyaddict · 11/01/2011 16:26

Another good lip stick is Maybelline Colour Sensational Lipstain.

Havingkittens · 11/01/2011 16:42

Nivea lip balm is good. Not too waxy but doesn't disappear too quickly either. The best thing about it too, is that I can wear it over my bright red or pink lipstick without causing it to bleed, which happens with lots of other lipsticks. The stick can get a bit soft though so I end up sort of dabbing it onto my lips rather than applying a slick like a normal stick lipbalm. I have tried sooo many lip balms, as an ex Roaccutane taker I've become a complete lipbalm junkie. That one's come out tops. 8hr cream is great but I hate the taste of it.

Victoriascrumptious, if you're not sure what colour to use and want something natural that brings out the colour of your lips Christian Dior do a product called Dior Addict Lip Glow which is a sheer lipstick which reacts to the ph in your lips and so the colour adapts to the wearer to give the most flattering shade.

ps. I wear blue based reds and pinks and they don't make my teeth look yellow. Benefit actually do a sheer blue based gloss specifically designed to make your teeth look whiter.

moragdingdongbellingham · 11/01/2011 17:37

I like the sound of that Dior one!

Korres lip balms are brilliant. I have a natural coloured one (very slight vanilla taste) and have seen that they also do tinted shades which I am now a-hunting for.

So essentially, it's a good conditioning base and they do colours too.

valiumredhead · 11/01/2011 18:34

I like No 7 lip gloss in the colour 'glaze' - I really like and it's a sort of cross between a gloss and a lippy so lasts a bit longer than a normal glosss.

CeliaFate · 11/01/2011 20:28

Make sure your lips are in good condition first. Scrub with a bit of sugar on a flannel and then vaseline/lip balm. I think a colour like Rose brown would suit your colouring.
