Mulberry is becoming a very expensive parody of itself.
I love the leather, love the craftsmanship but they are up their own arse and the new designs are yawnsome.
Agree that the leopard monstrosity = hideous.

moccachoccachino · 08/01/2011 12:39

I just don't really 'get' Mulberry. imo The designs though probably classic, are not that exciting.

The only design I really love is the Pheobe.

madammecholet · 08/01/2011 12:45

I agree madame (great name btw!), i do think they are vastly overpriced. You are certainly paying for a label and not the leather.

The Joni is my personal fave.
My biggest gripe about the bags is how heavy they are. The Bayswater is a lovely and so is the Roxanne, but chuck anything more than your keys, phone and purse in there and you'll soon need a visit to a chiropractor.

madammecholet · 08/01/2011 13:03

Can't find Joni??

Pic here

MadameOvary · 08/01/2011 13:08

Dont know why my Grin looked like that Confused

Abr1de · 08/01/2011 13:10

I think they are over-hyped. A friend has a secondhand one from Ebay. She adores it, which is fine, but to me it just looks like an old schoolbag. And it was hundreds of pounds, even secondhand.

PuraVida · 08/01/2011 13:24

Im classic mulberry girl. Love the old designs and Darwin leather. Don't mind some of the newer designs but would only cough up big bucks for ye olde ones

Abr1de · 08/01/2011 21:33

I think it was an older design, MadameO.

MrsMc82 · 08/01/2011 21:43

I agree, actually since they brought out the Daria etc with the huges shiny brass plate with the tree logos on its become a bit showy actually AND every bugger seems to have a mulberry at the mo!!!

I LOVE my Bayswater and think I'll use it till I'm an old (bag) lady but haven't lusted after a new season one for a while (since the mitzy's came the came out actually)

DH actually commented on the patents/animalprint/brassy - ness too when I was dragging him round handbag dept recently saying they look a bit chavvy for Mulberry - unheard of for him to comment on bags etc so either he's suddenly gay or its quite obvious!!!!! :o :o

HalfTermHero · 09/01/2011 00:14

I love mulberry and my shares in the company have made me a beautiful profit. Long live the bayswater!

gregssausageroll · 09/01/2011 07:46

I love mulberry and especially like the hobo type on the web at the moment. I find them getting quite expensive. Bags that were £5-600 a few years ago are now up at £850-900 +

Xolo · 09/01/2011 07:51

Hey OP, did you see the Bayswater with little metal TEAPOTS on it? Er, um, not on my wish-list either...

madammecholet · 09/01/2011 08:27

xolo, madness, complete barking madness.....but then that's prob what they are getting at!

Emo76 · 09/01/2011 12:19

I like the style of many of the bags bar the leopard print ones and ones with the big mulberry plaques on the front etc however I do think they are very expensive for what they are - they went up £100 each about 3 mths ago. I am not sure the craftsmanship justifies it (though you could argue the same for many bags!).

MadameOvary · 09/01/2011 13:09

Ever since the Bayswater came out they have reinvented themselves and aimed at the high fashion market. They get more editorial spreads now hence the higher prices...I figure they are thinking along the lines of Louis Vuitton, who have substantial year-on-year price increases.
The Bayswater bags were £495 when they initially launched, now they are £650+ Way too much.
I really stopped taking them seriously when they launched the covered canvas bags and still thought nothing of charging hundreds of pounds for them.
They are also, IMO, spreading themselves too thinly with the diffusion-type lines. First we had the Red-for-Gap fabric Bayswater and now their Mulberry for Target bags which look cheap and tacky (again IMO).

madammecholet · 09/01/2011 17:35

Madame I think the target bags are really horrid, and completely agree they are de valuing a brand.

if anyone has not seen this:

littlemoomin · 09/01/2011 18:28

Totally agree! Some of those new bags are horrific. Still love the classics though.

OtherwisePerfect · 09/01/2011 18:45

Oh dear god, My Eyes!

I was Hmm at the teapots too. I mean really? Teapots?

HotchpotchHoney · 10/01/2011 11:59

I do love my daria hobo and drawstring, great work bags as hold so much. but i do usually buy much less conspicuous bags.
My favourite is my oak roxanne its so used now that the leather is soft and feels great, still holds its shape and has served me well.
There are a couple that i like this season but i'm not sure that i will actually be buying as i said i would only buy if i sold some of my other bags and i don;t want to sell any so that means no buying. but it is my brithday in april so maybe if i drop hints to dp i may get one.

slowshow · 12/01/2011 16:56

Mulberry really have lost the plot. I used to love their sturdy, well-made, simple, sophisticated bags (I have a Bayswater and a Roxanne) but there's something distinctly River Island about the cheap, brightly coloured tat they've been bringing out over the last few years. I blame the new designer - Emma Hill, is it?

I like the look of the Alexa, but I hear they're really badly made.

And don't get me started on the PRICES.

magicinthehouse · 12/01/2011 18:50

They've gone overboard on the branding (as Anya Hindmarch has). It makes the bags even heavier, if such a thing were possible, and chavvy in the extreme.

I'm eyeing up Smythsons as the next English splurgey bag - the Nancy looks like it could be a contender for work, nice and roomy.
