Jo Malone

DH bought me Channel no 5 for Christmas - lovely but I haven't used it for years so thought I'd sneakily change it for Amber and lavender Jo Malone which I love - but on website it describes it as both masculine and unisex. Not sure I want to smell like a bloke. Thought I loved it but am now confused!

I do love White Jasmine & Mint. V clean fragrance.

Love Chanel No 19, but Chanel No 5 is not for me. Or maybe it is once I hit 70 :D Many people seem to associate Chanel 5 with the smell of soap and old lady.

"Many people seem to associate Chanel 5 with the smell of soap and old lady."

Many people listen to Black Eyed Peas and vote Tory ... don't listen to them Grin

I had Jo Malone Grapefruit body creme on my Christmas list. My mum gave it to me, and it is such a disappointment. I cost 60 Euro, and smells exactly the same as the M&S one I bulk buy at 2 Euro a bottle.

I'm a sucker for pretty packaging but I won't succumb to JM again.

For perfume I love Chanel Coco Mademoiselle, my mum wears No 5 and I associate it with her. The No 5 body creme is divine.

I too was given that cream a few years ago and was really disappointed, both in the smell and in its lack of richness. I really don't rate Jo Malone - did have a few perfumes a while ago but not impressed by their subtlety or interest - or anything really except the packaging.

They don't even have any claim to 'small niche company' cult status now. Just part of a big conglomerate.

Have been amazed at the strength of feeling against Jo Malone Shock I really was not interested in the packaging but genuinely think the amber and lavendar is unusual and lovely. I have had nice comments on it and was starting to think of it as a bit of a signature-whiff until the 'masculine' marketing speak made me a bit queazy. May be spurious claim - but I've heard that perfume smells different on everyone. Anais Anais smells gorgeous on my mum but sweet and tinny on me. Channel no 5 is lovely but makes me feel old. Think it's back to John Lewis for some testers...

I think it's just fashion, Scrabble. I suspect that jo Malons is suffering "The Boden Effect"; it's just become a little too popular, and a little too identifiable with "niceness", so the fashionista pioneers are off, in search of new, perfumed, veldts, upopulated and remote.

"jo Malons" = "Jo Malone" ....

Whenever I smell Eau Sauvage I think someone has dipped their wrists in Paxo Blush

I think scrabble is absolutely right about perfumes smelling different on every individual. And individual tastes vary hugely, as with food and drink and, I think, change as you get older (I don't just mean we just get more discriminating - though my general tastes are still the same - nothing sweet - I actually don't like some perfumes on me that I used to like when younger). That's why I'd never give anyone perfume unless they'd specifically asked for one by name.
