Need help to choose a haircut for DD

She is 7yo and has lovely long hair, with the fringe almost grown out.
However, she has recently start sucking her hair. She either sucks the side, or pulls hair from the top down across her forehead.
The Christmas low point was discovering that she had been sucking while eating a Curly Wurly and a large hank of hair was stuck to her shoulder with toffee.

If the problem persists, I will be arranging for her to have a haircut. I'm hoping that you'll all be able to advise me on appropriate styles.

Choices seem to be between:
a) a bob - but would she still be able to pull hair round and suck it unless very short?
b) a pixie style - but she has a large head and huge, beautiful eyes so I'm worried it might look odd.

Do I have any other options. I'm not looking to punish her with an ugly cut, just to remove temptation with a cut that is suitable for a 7yo.

Many thanks.

Thanks Poncey.
She pulls little strands out of her plaits, so it doesn't last a whole day at school Sad.
What is chewelery, please?

What is it with this chewing thing? Thought we were way past that but it has re-surfaced. It particularly pisses me off when it is done to clothes that are being worn at the time. Why?!? It's rank and smells.

We'd just beaten thumb-sucking (it did drag out rather), only for the hair thing to crop up. I'm losing the will to keep fighting this battle - but it is revolting.

Thanks for the tip, Poncey - I might try DD with one of the heart-shaped necklaces...

If all else fails, I'll get out the clippers and give her a crop like her Dad's.

Mine never have done thumb sucking and they are almost 9 and driving me mad with this new thing.

miche8 · 30/12/2010 11:56

unless you cut her hair really short shes not going to stop - can you not tie it back and spray it? or plat it and slick it with a little gel? can't imagine hair covered in product would be nice to chew. Please dont give her an ugly hair cut.

Meggles76 · 31/12/2010 10:36

My 6 year old has very long blonde and fine hair. It was all over her face unless tied back but she likes wearing it down. We had a finge and sone gentle layers put in through the sides. It sits so much better now, looks like a proper hairstyle and is out of her face.

I rather like the petit filous bob as I call out (see the little girl in the adverts)

Thanks for your ideas everyone.
Anyone got any pointers to a foul-testing non-toxic leave-in hair product?

Hair spray tastes pretty bad.

Bonsoir · 31/12/2010 21:26

Have it cut into a blunt cut (so that it swishes), but have the sides layered. DD has this style - looks fab when in plaits, because strands from the front are a bit short and tuck behind her ears!

piprabbit · 01/01/2011 11:26

Will try the hairspray, thanks.
If that fails, I'll talk to my hairdresser about Bonsoir's suggestion.
Thanks again.
