what shoes does your 1 year old almost walking baby wear?

I am struggling to know what to put on his feet. You would think I would know by now, but for some reason putting normal shoes on him right now bothers me!

What do your baby almost walking boys in particular wear on their feet outside in this cold weather?

I think you need "cruising" shoes - they're for when children are not quite walking. Here are some from Clarks.

onimolap · 26/12/2010 11:28

I kept mine in leather padders (Babypaws, a Tasmania based company who will mail order internationally - much better range of colours/styles than available here).

Once up on their feet, they stayed in padders indoors but had the Clarkes ones for outside, moving to Clarkes for everything once firmly upright.

GrizzlyMacDuff · 26/12/2010 20:19

JInglebells - problem is, he is going to grow out of them very quickly, and as he is only going to be wearing them for a short while, I cannot bear the thought of spending over £30 for them. That is horrendous!

onimo DD had those lovely leather padders, do you mean the hippy style ones? just leather slipper types? but she never wore them as shoes as her feet were SO small that by the time they fitted her she was running about, so just for slippers indoors only. So, they would be good for outside in cold weather, for ground walking/holding on to our fingers and stumbling? will go take a look at the site you mentioned.

We were told not to have anything on their feet until they could walk well, having their toes free is important. When out they wore socks and soft booties until they were ready for start right soft shoes.

Bunbaker · 26/12/2010 20:25

Can you not just put some extra thick socks on him? I am not keen on children wearing shoes until they have been walking properly for several weeks as the bones in their feet aren't properly developed. DD didn't get her first pair of shoes until she had been walking for three months. When we took her outside we carried her or put her in her buggy (she had health issues and it was winter, so we didn't want to waste money on shoes that would hardly ever get worn).

GrizzlyMacDuff · 26/12/2010 20:27

starison I completely agree with you, and at home/indoors anywhere he has nothing on his feet, or when in pushchair/front carrier etc he has socks on to keep feet warm. I would just like him to walk on grass/mud/sand before the summer months.

DD was walking in the summer so was fine for her as the weather meant she did not need anything on her feet on the beach. DS will get cold feet!

bunbaker he wears tights Grin on account of socks coming off within seconds. He likes free feet for sure!

Site is www.babypaws.com. I suggest you email about p&p costs: it was certainly less to get 2 or 3 pairs from them than pay UK high street prices - order with a friend perhaps, if you don't want that many?

They're amazingly friendly - I once just rang them up (in the days of night feeds), and got wonderful service and a friendly note in the box.

They go right down to size 0, and have various styles (including wraps), and I found them much easier to get on and off than the elasticated heel ones which seem to prevail in the shops here.

Sadly, in this weather, the only thing that is going to keep your son's feet warm and dry while walking outside is proper shoes, like the cruisers previously mentioned.

If you don't want him to wear them, you'll have to keep him indoors. I can't think of an alternative.

If you go down the leather slippers route, I used to get lovely ones from Snugglefeet, at really good prices.

GrizzlyMacDuff · 26/12/2010 20:32

i will email them, they look exactly what I want, warm and soft to protect his soles without restricting his feet. And they are sooo cute!

I know a couple of people with little ones who might be interested in getting some too actually. Good idea.

Clinkhards have their sale on, prewalkers are all £8 / £10 and they will measure his feet too.

Himalaya · 26/12/2010 20:42

Mine wore these little leather bootie things, they are fine for out and about until they are really walking.

Sossiges · 10/01/2011 09:34

How about Stonz booties? Suitable from baby to about 2/3. Keep feet warm and dry, look very cute (important, obviously :)), come in loads of different colours and are ideal for pram, tottering, walking, splashing in puddles etc. Only thing is they're not cheap (around £30) but I bought a pair for my daughter before Christmas and I think they're well worth the money. You can get them from www.happylittlesoles.co.uk and I'm sure they've got a sale on at the mo, so worth checking out

As i worked for clarks for 5 years, I can confirm it is vital never to put a baby in shoes till they can walk well.. shoes inhibits the child walking, the leather sole prevents the baby from curling the toe's. They are able to curl their toes on carpet and putting on shoes before they can walk well knocks them back..

annieapple2 · 28/01/2011 11:00

I was studies kids foot wear when my son was born and what other have said about children staying bare foot I would totally agree with as it is great for there feet however when that is not possible or when out and about I would recommend going for the Daisy roots style of shoes.
I Used to put my little man in Daisy roots shoes when he was at this stage because we have no carpet and the floor was slippy for him with socks on or to cold with out.
www.daisy-roots.com/

They are very cute, breathable, chrome free (safe if they put them in there mouth) leather and British made to a very high standard (I know this first hand as I did my work experiences thereGrin)

Plus if they don't get to messed up, I keeped a set of my sons and am going to put them in a box frame to remind me how small he was.

rachael2401 · 24/02/2011 19:26

Can I add www.mytwinkletoeshoes.co.uk/ for a much more affordable option! Those australian ones are gorgeous btw!

spidookly · 24/02/2011 19:31

no shoes

if they're not able to walk yet, there's no need for them to be on the ground outside in this weather

socks keep your feet warm
