Oh god feeling very miserable. Just had my long hair cut off VERY short and didn't intend to! Showed them a picture of what I wanted and is so much shorter! How long does it take to grow!!!

I have given up with T&G as well, they have a book of set cuts and you have to have one, if you have your own thing done it is useless.

I had a very expensive colour done there once, the colour would not ake but the colourist said nothing, just kept whispering to the junior 'leave it on longer' then after well over an hour she whispered 'just wash it off'. It was meant to be pillar-box red and it came out ginger. She told me it would look different in the natural light outside and was very snooty.

It didn't. It still looked ginger. And all the colour faded quickly (a blessing really). And I spent about 2.5 hours in that salon and the stylists barely said 2 words to me. I was too chicken to complain, just never went back.

I now go to a deeply uncool salon and they are brilliant.

I will never darken the door of any Toni & Guy ever again.

Had a terrible cut and colour years ago (meant to be blonde - just getting roots touched up - turned a horrible orange/yellow)

Went to another branch just for a blowdry once - it was the Head Stylist who did it - ended up looking like I'd been dragged through a hedge and was many ££££ lighter for the priviledge

I went for a haircut there once after I'd been through a long time of being totally broke. Thought it would be a treat(!) and my hair was taking over the world and needed lopping. The woman who cut it was so rude and unfriendly, and kept telling me off - properly telling me off, not just commenting - for having such thick/unruly hair. They only have about half an hour to wash and cut and mine took longer, but I didn't really feel there was anything I could do about that. The cut was tolerable but not good, and as I went to pay up (roughly twice what I usually pay) the horrible stylist woman kept crossly repeating "listen, next time you need to book a double appointment. A double appointment, remember." I just laughed at her total arrogance at the idea that I would want to pay upwards of £100 to be criticised for a full hour, and practically ran out of there.

According to my current hairdresser, T & G have a set style each month which they have to persuade as many people as possible to have, regardless of whether it will suit them or their hair. Shock What's the bloody point of that I wonder?

Small independent salon much better IMO.

I feel your pain. I had a shit haircut this week at Rush. I just went in for a trim but the (young, trendy, camp, disdainful) guy was determined that he wanted to do something edgy with my hair. He's cut it into a bob which is not the end of the world but it's not what I wanted and it's too high maintenance for my wavy hair (it's a bob which looks like it needs to be sleek).

I got off lightly though. He wanted to cut a v-shaped fringe in Xmas Shock

Anyway, I think the best advice is a) to complain (the manager has given me a free cut, blowdry and Kerastase conditioning treatment) with their top stylist in a few month's time) and b) experiment with your hair and make up to work out how you can make the most of it. A short dark bob with a fringe sounds lovely - it might just be a question of getting used to it and working out how to style it to suit you.

If you've gone from blonde to brunette you'll need to re-think your make up and also what clothes suit you.

Have you tried playing around with clips/hairbands, straighteners, different make up etc to find a look that you like?

RamblingRosa · 23/12/2010 09:00

Oh, and I used to go to Toni and Guy many moons ago - I always saw the same hairdresser who was pretty good but overall my impression was that they have a set idea of what cut they want to do and that's what they'll do, regardless of what the client says. I'm not a big fan. Actually, Rush is a similar kind of chain.

Serves me right for not going to my usual, lovely hairdresser.

whensitgunnahappen · 23/12/2010 09:03

I had a nightmare with them too. Got a pixie crop it was actualy shaved at the back! I didn't want it and it didn't look like the picture! On the plus side. Now Ita grown back my hair is in lovely condition! You will be fine. Girlie headband maybe?!?

pipplin · 23/12/2010 09:23

Few years ago I said I would like some more blonde put in my highlighted dark blonde hair. No joke I came out with White hair. I will never go there again
although my current hairdresser saw my picture of claudia winkleman's hair length and decided that's obviously not what I wanted and cut it a lot shorter so I look like a rag doll.
This too will take years to fix. :(
My sympathises op

HowsTheSerenity · 23/12/2010 09:30

Never will I darken their doorstep again.
They gave me a mullet. I have curly hair. I looked like the inbred child of a sheep shagger. I look like a dodgy bank robber at the best of times but s mullet!! FFS I swear the police were following me for days.

Butterbur · 23/12/2010 09:30

is it partly the shock of having much shorter hair? I find it always takes at least a week to get used to a new style.

How about more dramatic makeup, and showy ear rings? I've cheered up crops that made me look like a convict with these.

Oh, and no-one else will notice. They see your face, not your hair.

BiscuitNibbler · 23/12/2010 09:33

Somehow T&G have built themselves an image as a quality salon, however they mainly employ (for a pittance) trainees, who leave as soon as they can. You are paying a huge price for a cut from a student. They only do a handful of styles because they are novices and you could go to the local hairdressing college, where you would get a very cheap or free cut, with people with a similar level of experience, but who have teachers on hand to advise.

ElfPantsAtMidnightMass · 23/12/2010 09:43

That's interesting Biscuit - I have had loads of cuts over the years from the less experienced hairdressers at small salons, and never had a bad cut. They usually take loads of care/time if it needs it etc. And all for usually about £20-25.

chickenlickin · 23/12/2010 13:51

Was all prepared to go in a have it out with them, but feel that if they say 'oh yes we can see it looks crap' I will be even more miserable! Most of my friends have politely said it looks 'nice', one of them told me the truth and my DP said it is ok but will look better when it grows!!!!!!! Just feel if I do something else i.e with the colour, if that goes wrong Iam fucked!! I will NEVER go there again and will prob never have a 'styled' haircut again! x

Ok quick up-date and I rang them as didn't want to stand there saying look at my shit hair everyone! At first they tried to get me to go in and have something else done, stuck to my guns and they are giving me a full refund! Now I am getting my normal hairdresser to put more blonde in it and cut some layers or add some shape to it!! Will just have to dodge the photos at christmas!!!!!
