Please tell me that Hunters have had their day

My 2 year old purple flowery wellies have bitten the dust and all I seem to see these days are ladies in Hunters. At first I thought they were rather cool, but then absolutely everyone had them on and they seem a bit well I guess ubiquitous is a kind way of describing them.

So today I had the choice between buying a madly designed pair of replacement wellies at £18.99 or the Hunters at £65.00. I went for the former as did not want to be trend victim but then realised that cheap wellies may not last long and perhaps they would have been a good investment.

Anyway long story short question are Hunters a wee bit ostentatious for the snow?

gone all nasty and flimsy. you need some muckboots.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 21/12/2010 22:24

Second the Muckboots, they are great.

ScarlettWalking · 21/12/2010 22:29

Hunters are honestly the best made wellies and last for about 100 years.

If you buy the pink with fur/maribou trim you will look like an idiot but the classic green has been around for years, they are great grips in the snow as well.

tulpe · 21/12/2010 22:39

Hunters are fab. Yes, I see loads of people wearing them but they are great and stand up to the job for which they are designed (not just poncing around a field at a musical festival or for accessorising your totally unnecessary Range Rover).

Can heartily recommend the neoprene lined ones.

Megletitsnow · 21/12/2010 22:44

My mum has got me a pair for Xmas (although I have been wearing them as it's snowed), now she wants a pair and she doesn't do labels. Hmm.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 21/12/2010 22:47

Depends on whether you want warm feet or not.

Cold feet = wellies of any sort.

Warm feet = walking boots. Especially with proper thick walking socks.

saltyseadog · 21/12/2010 22:49

Hunters are fab. End of.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 21/12/2010 22:51

My feet are very toasty in my Muckboots, I think any neoprine wellies would be the same.

HalfTermHero · 21/12/2010 22:56

I love my hunters. They have lasted well for years with no sign of giving up anytime soon. I will admit though that it is pissing me off to see so many obviously 'try hard' yet still unfashionable mums wearing them these days. I wish that they had not become so mainstream.

rowingboat · 21/12/2010 23:02

I can't wear hunters, too narrow in the foot, I don't know if they last any better than any other wellie. Horsey people wear them to muck out, but I think the are just better for riding in than bog standard wells.
I have just bought some Joules wellies and have been wearing them practically everyday, very comfy and great grips. Better for wider footed people with big calves. Smile
As a comparison, my son wore out his decent wellies and has an emergency, cheap pair which have hopeless grips, he is skidding around in the snow, whereas I have only had one real 'incident'. Didn't actually land on my bum, but did do a funny Cossack dance with my arms waving around. I should have shouted 'Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! or whatever it is you shout when you do one of those dances.
Re the cold I took my the liners out of my Merrell shoes and put them in the wellies and also wear tights and woolly socks, no problem with cold feet. We have had snow since the 28th of November so they have been well-tested.

Sherbert37 · 21/12/2010 23:20

Well my Hunters have split after 18 months of daily use. Not going to get another pair. Which style of muckboots for dog walking?

higgle · 21/12/2010 23:47

My Hunters split at the ankle after about a year or so, Aigle much better.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 22/12/2010 05:41

I've got the Muckboot Dewent which does me fine for dog walking and the allotment. They are pretty grippy in the snow too.

rookiemater · 22/12/2010 08:29

Ah looks like a false economy then. I do have walking boots but a) couldn't be faffed lacing them and unlacing them all the time and b) our snow has been so high that it goes over the walking boots by about a foot.

See I'm with Halftermhero I do feel like a "try hard" yet still dreadfully unfashionable Mum as all the teenage girls are wearing. Still if it stops me doing a cossack dance like rowing boat....

Are the muckboots lined, they look like they might be, which would be a bonus?

traceybath · 22/12/2010 09:24

I've got hunters in navy with fur trimmed hunter welly socks - am clearly try-hard Wink

But have warm dry feet that can walk in the snow.

Sherbert37 · 22/12/2010 10:03

Thanks Wynken. Off to look online now. Am skint but dog walking gear has a special category in the budget here...

chocohohoholic · 22/12/2010 10:08

Hunters are rubbish now they have moved production from Scotland to overseas (could be China but I'm not certain).

If you want hunters get them second hand or make sure they have the made in Scotland label otherwise you might as well buy cheaper ones.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 22/12/2010 10:32

I think the Muckboots have neoprine in the foot bit as well. They are hard work to get off, there is a bit of a knack to it. Got mine after recommendation on here and haven't regretted it.

daimbardiva · 22/12/2010 10:32

I've been wearing Hunters for 18 years now (not the same pair..) and love them, so comfy. However, not made for warmth - have swapped to Olang snow boots for the moment, but will be back in my Hunters when temperatures have returned to normal (second the made in Scotlnad comment from above...)

norfolkBRONZEturkey · 22/12/2010 10:36

Had my hunters for a few years now and they get used a lot. I like them because they fit my feet and legs which most boots don't.
I also like muckboots though finding ones that fit me is tough

Not sure if wearing hunters means you're a trend victim. Is it trendy to wear wellies. I wear mine to stop my feet getting wet and covered in shit.

vjg13 · 22/12/2010 11:19

My Hunters that I wear for dog walking have been rubbish. Bought in August and one leaks and the other is worn right down on the heel. Never again.

Can highly recommend Aigle.

NinkyNonker · 22/12/2010 14:11

I love my hunters. Warm and comfy.

Sherbert37 · 22/12/2010 14:27

Any idea where you can buy Muckboots in Central Scotland? Would prefer to try them on before buying.
