There's a name for my eye bag problem! And a solution!!!

Lately I've been catching myself in the mirror or in photos looking like an older, tireder, angrier version of myself!

I feel like I've got eye bags yet I dont really, there's just a general darkness, a shadowy hollowy look about me. Not major - but enough to make me feel a bit old and tired!

I figured I just had bad eyebags and needed to whack some concealer on but if anything that makes it worse!!!

But I've worked out what it is! Its called "tear troughs".

Its <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.hadleighclinic.com/treatments/tear-troughs/images/before_and_after.jpg&imgrefurl=www.hadleighclinic.com/treatments/tear-troughs/tear-troughs-photos.html&h=265&w=448&sz=27&tbnid=CMjtTPH_R09SNM:&tbnh=75&tbnw=127&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtear%2Btroughs&zoom=1&q=tear+troughs&hl=en&usg=__MSYylY8ZZ6uGyKYRKMLxDGOVxRA=&sa=X&ei=ULYHTdW7F4iZhQeI-cHvDw&ved=0CCgQ9QEwAg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this kind of effect. No actual tangible bag as such but a sort of crease that happens, particularly if you smile, but also if you look down, that makes you look/feel as if you do have eye bags!

The solution, of course, is good old non-surgical fillers. There are several clinics that specialise in fixing it.

Will I have it fixed? Probably not!!! But its great that it has a name and a solution!

I just thought I'd share that in case any of you waste £££ on eye bag cream when you need a shot of Juvoderm/Restylane! I bet its more common than I realised!

Is this a blatent advert?

TattyDevine · 14/12/2010 18:50

No! Sorry to send that link, but its the one that diagnosed it.

I just clicked on it hoping it was an American one so I could prove its not an ad, but its not, it is UK - I didn't even check before.

Anyway, I'm a regular poster, having bored most of you to death in the past about hair volume, Aveda, how bleach really isn't that bad, acrylic nails, oh, and Uggs (dont get me started.

Anyway, dont care, just thought I'd share on the off chance anyone was as pleased to give it a name as I was.

In fact, do a search on "Tatty" and you'll see me waxing lyrical in various AIBU including how I am a SAHM thereore I couldn't possibly work for the clinic in this link Grin

I have these too, but they match the rest of my wrinkly haggard face, so I'm keeping them!

You may guess I've just seen some particularly grim photos of myself at a party this weekend.

With my mum. Who looks younger than I do Xmas Envy).

TattyDevine · 14/12/2010 20:14

I bet she doesn't though Mrs Claus.

My mum looks really good for her age but its just context. She actually has quite deep nasio-labial folds (the ones from nose to mouth) and the one in between the eyebrows (it has a name but I can't remember and I can't be faffed googling it)

She lacks surface wrinkles, she's oily and well hydrated, but the dynamic wrinkles are there. She's a bit jowly and necky these days too. She's 65, I'd expect it.

I think its normal to freak about these little signs of ageing creeping in in your late 30's and hopefully by your late 40's you are over it! Grin

Apologies tatty!

I have these, but use a MAC concealer which does the job nicely, just don't catch me at 7am!Xmas Grin

TattyDevine · 14/12/2010 20:44

Apology accepted! I do tend to be over enthusiastic about things, its not the first time I've been accused of working for someone. To be fair, there are few links with photos that aren't before and afters. Nobody posts a "Loretta has tear troughs. Woe is her. Never mind" type blog. Grin

Ooh Mac, I might try that.

I'm thinking the Touche Eclat and the like are in fact not so good for this complaint because I suspect the light reflecting particles just enhance the shadow thing. A good bog standard concealer is probably the way to go. I wonder if there is a shading technique - makeup artists, make thyselves known please?

I'm thinking if I just walk with very, very good posture, like a graceful swan, and never tilt my head downwards, that will do for now. Confused

tatty i watched a blog somewhere which showed you how to apply it to eye area to conceal dark circles. In a triangle, start down the line of your nose then out to the middle of your eyeline, then fill it in.

Worked wonders of the blog...I just keep forgetting in the morning..:)

TattyDevine · 14/12/2010 22:04

Blog searches will commence tomorrow. Will update if I find anything fab.

Loving the "Beauty Scribbler" blog by the way but that's probably been mentioned on here many times I would expect. I'm really into eyelashes at the moment which is probably why I am focussing on my baggage.

Oh there is a whole world out there of crap that distracts you enough not to focus on stuff that you should be focussing on! Grin

I have tear troughs (mild, it's the darkness rather than the 'bags') and agree that I focus on them and fixate when I catch myself in the mirror. They are worse because I have until recently been co-sleeping/feeding with a toddler and sleep is messed up.

I agree that concealer can make them worse but I have a few tricks to help while you are waiting. Basically you have to use far less concealer than you think

Get a corrector (Eve Pearl Salmon or Bobbi Brown) in a lighter colour than you'd usually use. After foundation, use a small artist's brush, or concealer brush to dot a tiny amount of corrector (or light concealor) JUST ON THE BLUEISH LINE. Blend out and apply the very lightest amount of illuminating powder (such as LM)

I find eye make up - with defined crease and a light smokeyness (using a mid-strength colour like MAC Shale or Shu Brown 945) will deflect attention to the eye and away from the troughs. Use blusher (Exhibit A by NARS is the best for everyone) -- it also detracts from the troughs.

You'll have to forgo total coverage on the undereye area but this will help disguise that thin line. Besides, if you have tear troughs you're likely to have fine lines and heavy concealor/powder always highlights them, so this means less product there and fewer chances of settling into lines higher up the 'bag'.

I have heard Nick Lowe in London is good for tear troughs, and there is a clinic in Sussex which is supposed to be good.

I am considering it. It doesn't always work however and there is the issue of having to go back fairly frequently.

But yes, just last week I did searches and ditched the corrector/concealer combo.

There are some plastic surgery forums to ask about this, but I for one don't want to get sucked in!

TattyDevine · 15/12/2010 09:03

I wouldn't rule out having it fixed, if perhaps I had lots of things coming up where I wanted to look really good - family wedding followed by important birthday party followed by 2 week holiday followed by school reunion or something like that - lots of things packed into a 6 month period! But for everyday, day in day out, school run and the odd night at the cinema which is what my life is at the moment while my children are so young, I have to wonder if I should bother and whilst you do it for yourself, you also have to ask if anyone else actually notices.

I do think its probably like being upgraded to Business Class though - once you've been there you dont want to go back, so I wouldn't do it lightly! I can afford it though if it becomes a huge issue and for that reason I gain comfort from knowing there is a solution, even if I never use it, its there if I "need" it!

I'm also considering botox and tear trough filler. Am a bit skint at the moment so will put off for 6 months while I think seriously about it.

Thing is, never thought I'd say the above. I've been quite scornful about surgery and dicking about with your face, but then I'm living with a face that looks tired around the edges.

Creams don't work, but some think nothing of spending $$$. Botox and fillers DO work, albeit with caveats and greater risks.

TattyDevine · 15/12/2010 10:29

I've had botox on my frown between the eyebrows, it really does work, it is wonderful and worth the money.

ooh ooh, the glabellas?

Are you in London? Whereabouts did you have it (would you PM me?) Thanks!
