What colour nail polish on toes?!

ja9 · 27/09/2005 20:53

I'm going to a fancy 'do' at the beginning of october. I'm wearing a mid-length cream dress with a black floral pattern on it (from coast), a black shrug, black shoes, a beaded black bag and black jewellary. Trouble is i dont know what colour to do my toes!! Would the standard red stand out too much? Would it be better to go for a neutral (french manicure style colour) - although i never think a neutral looks well on my pale feet!

Any style experts willing to give me some advice?

TIA

Red sounds ok to me. That's what I'd go for, but then again, I am a style void

bran · 27/09/2005 20:59

I thought that colour on toes was on it's way out, especially as the rest of your outfit doesn't have any colour. Could you just have a pedicure and buff the the nails so that they shine?

moozoboozo · 27/09/2005 21:00

I think anything goes tbh

CarolinaMoon · 27/09/2005 21:07

v v dark red (Rouge Noir-type), I would say. would look stunning with all that black IMHO.

ja9 · 27/09/2005 21:14

Good idea Carolina Moon. thanks.

any more opinions?

I often find myself with iridescent green toes - rather like a nest of tropical beetles. I love my feet (someone has to) and it draws people's attention. If you feel really confident about making a statement, go for a really bold colour. Leaving them undone or pale means no one will notice them. Poor toes.

expatinscotland · 27/09/2005 21:22

I agree with Rouge Noir.

True cherry colours are popular this Autumn as well - not as bright as true red, not as dark as rouge noir.

A cherry shade might be a good compromise if you're wearing black jewellry and accessories - saves the look from being too goth (unless that's what you're going for, tho).

frannyf · 27/09/2005 21:22

I might go for a bronzey colour, think metallic is meant to be in this season? What about lilac or another shade of purple? Not keen on the idea of bright red, but Rouge Noir sounds good I agree.

expatinscotland · 27/09/2005 21:23

Sorry, I thought you said black dress!

Oooo, a cherry w/that cream. Deffo!

frannyf · 27/09/2005 21:27

Yes, scratch my previous post, a cherry red or a dark purpley red, definitely.

expatinscotland · 27/09/2005 21:28

How about the rest of your makeup? Eye makeup? Lippy?

Gawd, I LOVE makeup!

Heathcliffscathy · 27/09/2005 21:28

deffo a pearly white (several coats so it is opaque) imo!

expatinscotland · 27/09/2005 21:30

Warning: if you are doing opaque, practice, practice, practice!

This can take a few tries to get right - not blob it up, get streaky, etc.

Or go to a professional.

Are you doing your nails as well?

ja9 · 27/09/2005 22:41

doing it all myself...

havent even thought about make up. will probably just do my same old same old

so, cherry red then. is that the consensus? is that a dark red? or a bright red? real cherries or glace cherries??!!!

Def dark red! My toenails are always Rouge Noir in winter!

i would go for dark red.

imo&e - pale colours on toes only look good if you have perfectly formed feet... dunno why, but there it is.

Gomez · 27/09/2005 22:52

Deep, dark almost black but not quite purple.

Or red.

How is your boy?

expatinscotland · 27/09/2005 22:56

Real cherry colour. I agree about Rimmel being easy to apply. They're also more likely to have a real cherry shade, b/c it's a trendy colour at the mo'.

OPI nail varnish chips SO easily, IMO, and Bourjois has nice colours but I've had to rely on all my experience as a nail varnish aficianado to get it to go on well. L'Oreal JetSet will dry quickly, but I've found it chips easily as well. L'Oreal Ceramide lasts longer but it's not quick drying.

Chanel and Revlon Nailfinity last and last. Well worth the investment, especially if you're going for a shade you think you'll be wearing more than once.

On the other hand, Bourjois does have some lovely, incredibly long-wearing eye shadows and blushes for reasonable prices that are good for the holiday season or for a special 'do.

Good lord, Expat, you really do love make-up! I will remember who to come to with my make-up queries in future...

I am really into french manicure at the moment. I have done my own finger nails with Rimmel products.
I don't have it done myself but I have seen people with their toes done this way and it looks really classy and pretty. That's what I would go for.

ja9 · 29/09/2005 12:54

big thanks everyone. i bought a rimmel one this morning. it's called desire and is a very dark red. they had one called black cherries but when i tested it i thought it looked too purpley.

expatinscotland - at your extensive knowledge of nail polishes!!! if there was an admiration icon i would use that one!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 29/09/2005 13:09

I have 'desire'! It's my Autumn shade! Looks great w/all skin tones.

If you're not a regular nail varnish on toes person, give it a few tries before the real thing. Daytime light is best, but any brightly lit place will work.

ja9 · 29/09/2005 22:37

one more question, sorry! should i wear this dark red on my fingernails too or opt for a clear / neutral? It seems very dark and stark for hands... expatinscotland?
